To the parents of current cadets and mids…what are your kids doing this summer? I enjoy hearing all the different things they get to experience.
My cadet is spending most of June in Europe. The first 11 days are on a military history trip through Germany, France, Luxembourg, and Belgium – it follows the 1940 and 1944 campaigns in northern Europe during WWII. After that he will be doing research for his thesis paper at the university in Freiburg, Germany. Then home for about 10 days leave. For two weeks in July he’ll be at Basic Mountain Warfare in Alaska. Then home again for two weeks leave before returning to start the last academic year! :thumb:

That's a very cool trip. Lucky cadet! :thumb:

Son just returned from a training cruise based out of Norfolk. Got to spend a day with Navy SEALs. Now is spending the month as a CADRE at Summer Seminar. Will then take a summer course to get it out of the way for the fall. Has about a month of leave before reform in August.

Well now that wouldn't give them a realistic idea of Plebe Summer, would it! LOL

My Midn is currently "at sea" paddling Prince William Sound in AK aboard a sea kayak for 24 days........quite a difference from last summer's Sub cruise below the south Atlantic for 21 days..
What fantastic Summer training/travel opportunities and experiences these young men and women are given at the Academies ! :thumb:

Keep them coming...I know there are lots more SA parents on this forum.
Luigi - He is very fortunate. This is his second history trip to Europe. On spring break when he was a yearling he went to France to tour the WWII battlefields of Normandy. He came home with 400 pictures and some great memories.
I got a text message from my son this morning. He arrived in Germany but was complaining about having to wear a suit for the long plane ride. To "blend in" they aren't allowed to wear anything with Army/USMA/West Point on it or any uniforms, but he said they already had one German man ask if they were US Army. Cadets can make complaining a varsity sport!

WAMom68 - is your DS's (rising Firstie?) language German?
What awesome opportunities for the Cadets!

2 days ago, my son landed in London, England. He'll be at Mildenhall and a little time at Lakenheath. He'll be there for about 3 weeks, then he comes back to the academy to teach survival training. Then we'll get a chance to have a vacation.

Yes to both...he is a Firstie and his language is German. It's fitting since he was born at the Army hospital in Nuremberg Germany and his heritage is German on his Dad's side.
Christcorp -- sounds like a great summer for your son too!

IF he has the weekend off...then he MUST MUST MUST:
1. Visit RAF Duxford
2. Visit Ely Cathedral
Those are two "local" sites that are pretty impressive if he's never seen something like that.
I could go on and on, since I grew up in that area...

I love the chance to read about the opportunites these cadets and mids are being given!
My cadet spent 10 days at home, then started Sapper School at Fort Leonard Wood yesterday. Wish him luck! :thumb: After Sapper he has another 10 days of leave, followed by his Infantry CTLT in Hawaii. My grad is spending his summer (and fall and winter) in scenic Afghanistan as an Inf Platoon Leader.

Hi,
Daughter is currently in coveted San Diego on a destroyer which was on a training exercise this past week (she got to drive the boat - her words not mine) and is now off for the weekend. She goes underway again either tomorrow or Monday for a week, then back in port and then underway once again. Having a blast!!
Her second training is on YPs - so I guess there's a price for everything!!

I may have just seen him. I was walking into the learning resource center to get a sheet signed off and out came a group of USAFA cadets decked out in their USAFA PT gear. I did have to laugh a little though at the fact that they looked so out of place in USAFA PT gear instead of the regular AF PT gear. I hope they'll go buy some regular PT stuff so they don't stick out quite as much

:thumb: When? Mine was born in January 1988. We were stationed at Herzo Artillery Base (Herzogenaurach) from Dec. 1986 - Dec. 1989.
I have heard that Sapper School is one of the harder ones to get as a cadet...I am sure he will enjoy it and do very well. Ft. Leonard Wood is where my hubby did his basic training. He has horror stories about the chiggers!

Yes, that was him. They arrived this morning. They have already gone to the BX looking for regular PT gear, but they are all sold out of the normal sizes. If you see him again give him a shout from me.

We were in Nuremberg (Pinder Kaserne) from May 83-Dec 84, then Bamberg from Dec 84-Oct 86. He was born in Nov 1985. I know exactly where Herzo was.
Not sure how much my cadet will ENJOY Sapper, but he will learn a lot. Tell your husband now the problem seems to be ticks, instead of chiggers.

And the unrelenting suffocating summer humidity at " Fort Lostinthewoods".....I spent a few of my college summers there ....my dad was the "mayor" of that sprawling base many years ago...

I can't believe you know where Herzo was, it was tiny! When we first arrived in Germany a Sgt. came to pick us up. On the way back we were asking him about the post. He told us you could crawl from one end to the other in 5 minutes - he was right. I was in shock because I thought all Army posts were like Ft. Lewis. The commissary was smaller then a Ft. Lewis Shopette.
Ticks and/or chiggers - YUCK!!
Now that I've taken my own thread off topic I'll try to get back to the subject.

My mid is in San Diego on a lhd (landing helicopter deck) ship. They have been out to sea on war games exercises with 15 other countries. They are in port for a few days, then will be underway to Hawaii for ten days. He has gotten to go in amphibious craft and hover craft from ship to shore and to another ship. He called the other night and was as giddy as a kid at a birthday party! He will have a couple days in Hawaii staying at a base and seeing the sights before returning to USNA.
Block 2 will be sailing out of USNA. Then hopefully ten days home. He is taking a summer class in August to lighten his fall semester load. Which means not much leave, but we think it is a wise decision.

My mid is at Leatherneck in Quantico. A little sore after the first week but all is well and is firmly commited that Marine Ground is the first choice for service selection. Described Leatherneck as "plebe summer on steroids" but you get weekend liberty.
After Leatherneck, it's back to the yard for first set cadre/detailer for plebe summer. Will be company XO and is looking forward to the role and seeing life at the academy come full circle with the next set of plebes.
After plebe summer cadre duty it's home for almost 4 weeks of leave. We are excited since we have not seen our mid since Christmas.

My cadet is finishing up week 3 in Germany. He comes home on Saturday () for 3 weeks, then goes for Beast 2 cadre. After that, it's a semester abroad...we won't see him til Christmas. Out of 52 weeks in 2010 we'll see him for a grand total of 4. Happy for him, kinda sad for us!

What's he doing while in Germany? Will he return there for his semester abroad?
My son was cadre for beast 2 last summer and, except for the lack of sleep, he loved it!

My cadet was to be at Airborne school right now but it was overbooked and plebes were dropped. So leave, Buckner, and then two weeks in Monterey, CA on some data processing assignment. He has firmly decided to major in Spanish, or engineering, or IT, or history-LOL, it changes every time I see him.

My Cadet (2011) will be spending 7 weeks in Uganda, Africa. There is a small village there with 70 children in a one-room school, so she will be building a school. 5 Cadets are going to Africa, some to the same village and some to another area on a different assignment.

My daughter is also at Leatherneck this week. Over the past summers she has sailed 44's to Newport RI, done USS Batan for Fleet Week in Boston, flown a jet out of Oceana, driven a Boomer out of Kings Bay (actually got to drive and dive) and some weapons time at Lejune Then did five weeks in Tianjin China for language immersion. Walked the Great Wall and got followed down the street by the children in Tianjin. Blond hair and blue eyes are a big thing in Tianjin. Will be detailer for second session. Doing first semester in Beijing starting end of August.

Leatherneck update:
Per my mid Leatherneck is like plebe summer on crack not steriods. The tempo and pace are exhausting, the humidity sucks and the bugs bite. The following text was the best of many from last week:
Text to dad:
I just got back from night land navigation. Oh my god! Horrible experience! I fell down a 4ft cliff and lost my rifle for a bit. Fell in the same river 6 times and ran into every solid object possible. Nice bloody bruise on left shin from running into a log. Cloudy night with no moon. Night land navigation is like being blindfolded and then being told to run through the Quantico woods. Got my score and I passed with a 90%! Overall feelin good.
Per weekend phone call the objective is to get through the next two weeks. Service selection choice will still be Marine Corps, with no hesitation.
Gotta Love em!

Leatherneck over tomorrow and my daughter is also leaning heavily MC. All heat rash and bug bites after the other day but still sounds upbeat. She highly recommends shin guards for night nav at Quantico. She met every tree and stump in the forest. I think she also ran into "over" the same cliff and river.
