For many of you this title sounds strange.

The AFSC is your career in the AF.

As many have you been sitting and waiting for board results. Bullet and I have been able to sympathize with the fear of the unknown since our DS was waiting for his own board....started this board process back in Dec

At 8:59 EST our wonderful son called to inform us he was selected for UPT.

I know many AFROTC candidates and cadets are always concerned about their chances of UPT. Here's proof it happens!

OBTW, he is a NON-TECH major.

Congrats Pima! My DS is going to be a non-tech major as well and he also wants to fly so I am sure he will be heartened to see that there are still opportunities to attain this.

Thank you all, we are proud, but more than anything like many of you awaiting board results, just relieved that the roller coaster ride is done....at least for 1 yr (will go through it again next yr for base assignments and report date)!

I hope that our DS's ability can also give hope to those non-tech majors that you can have it all...the scholarship, the course major and the AF career.

Mom's pride, but he earned it...he followed the advice given....get a strong gpa, strong AFOQT, strong TBAS, strong PFT, PLUS very involved in the det.

FYI, as much as the scholarship numbers are decreasing, the Rated slots are expected to increase for the next several yrs.

This yr they had 800 slots for 1800 cadets. The highest in the past few yrs.

I have stated before those who survive this force re-structuring will be sitting prettier from a statistical chance.

OBTW DS turns 21 this week, and the plan was always to have him meet Dear Old Dad, at the squadron bar (only one allowed at the Pentagon) to toast his birthday with AF people...I guess now the toast will be to the next flying generation.

DS summed it up the best, I can sleep now for the 1st time in months.

Congratulations Pima to you, your son and Bullet!! Your son sounds like a great "kid" and I'm sure he will be a fine AF Officer.:thumb:

Off topic, but on topic.

He will be a great officer for one reason. Last week when he was awaiting the results, he said to me:

"Mom, I want UPT, but if I don't get it, I am okay. Dad taught me that wearing the blues was more important than wearing the bag"

I do wonder if maybe the Det Command saw that in him when they supported him for UPT.

To perk up all AFROTC cadets, KEVSTER especially.

At our DS's det:

10 out of 10 got rated, or so he has heard.

6 got UPT
2 got CSO (in old days they were called WSOs)
2 got ABM

Nobody got UAV which is one of their options. Cadets actually get to rack and stack between rated choices. Their OML determines where they land in that stack.

Pima I cant tell you how happy I am for you and your family right now! :shake: 100% selection is also great news for the det! :thumb: Your DS is my mentor again this semester and you can be sure that I will be picking his brain (yours and bullet's as well) about everything.

Once again Congrats!!! :jump1:

I just did a double take......800 slots??? That seems really high? Don't most rated slots come out to about 600-700?

Pima
23rd February 2011, 07:03 PM
800 slots includes UPT, CSO, ABM and UAV.

500 for UPT out of 800 slots total. 800 selected out of 1800 candidates.

The remaining 300 were:
CSO
ABM
UAV

Ahh thank you for the clarification! Yes I think I have seen that they are projecting about 560 UPT slots for FY 14 and I assume that the others would also mirror this as well. Fingers crossed!

Nick, I can't remember are you this yrs board or are you next yr?

Also for posters that are new to the process, it should be explained there are 2 boards. The rated and non-rated.

The rated gets released 1st. Obviously there will be cadets that didn't get it, thus, they than hand in a new "dream sheet" and go to the non-rated board. The non-rated board meets in March, these cadets will find out their slots in April sometime.

It is about a 4 week turn around from the board meeting to the release date.

For Class of 13 it is suppose to be another bumper crop of rated slots next yr too.

The one thing on Nick's list for AFROTC that shocked me was 7 for Combat Rescue. That seemed like a lot because in the AF world Combat Rescue is a very small group. And I mean small especially when you compare it to security forces, which are only taking 28....ever base has SP's, but not every base has Combat Rescue.

I didnt put in for a rated slot. Sent in my Form 53 on Tuesday. We were told we'd find out the results somewhere around 26 March. Im hoping it wont get delayed.

The CRO slots are a suprise. There are also alot of STO slots. I guess theyre planning on really bumping up the Spec ops side.

Good luck. Actually for the rated board it was delayed, a few days. It was supposed to have been released last Friday.

The kicker was the results were released for the West Coast on Tuesday, basically the list came down after 4 EST. Thus, dets on the East Coast found out on Wed.

So do you mind sharing what you put on your 53?

I also agree that if you put CRO and STO together 15 is alot...than add in ALO's that would bring the number to the exact same as SPs.

I am curious to see why this large amount.

Maybe you can answer this, do helo pilots go under the pilot slots? If so I wonder if helo's also got a bump in numbers.

OBTW if you see my munchkin wandering around tomorrow tell her Mom says happy b'day. I know her 2 bffs live in your dorm, so when she isn't at AJ she is in your dorm. Off topic, but 1 perk for ROTC cadets at VT is they have their own dorm, so they never have to worry about housing shortages, like many colleges.

I dont know about helo slots. Probably a question better put to someone who's currently at UPT. Id imagine if the spec ops are getting beefed up that would mean increases in helo slots as well as AC/MC-130s. ALO is another one that I was suprised to see there. I guess they took the rated requirement off that AFSC.

My dreamsheet looked like this:
1) Intel
2) Space/Missile Ops
3) ALO
4) Sec Forces
5) Maintenance
6) Acquisitions

There really aren't a whole lot of options open to non-tech majors...I can see why they give out so many scholarships to the engineers.

What company does she have friends in? If its mine, I'll be sure to keep an eye out.

Pima

Our DS wanted Intel or ALO also if he didn't get rated.

The ALO wasn't a shocker because Bullet was an ALO at Bragg. Not that it was about walking in Dad's shoes, but the attitude of if I am going to serve in the AF I want to be in the thick of things.

Bullet's ALO tour was one of my favorite tours. It is a very tight knit community. To me that was an insane wake up call of the inner workings regarding the military.

People should know ALO in these terms is not ALO in AFA terms. They actually go front line with the Army and call in the air strikes for troops pinned down in the fight.

Jump ALO (Bragg) is all volunteer. They jump in with the Army, but with their AF team (usually 1/2 officers, the rest are enlisted, some have also done Ranger school). They are the ones to call in the coordinates for where they want them to attack.

It was an ALO that called out to the F15E to come in and support a British team. The person who called out to the ALO for the F15E's was pretty famous. His 1st name is Harry...last name Windsor aka Prince Harry.

What is CRO and STO?
Thanks.

CRO and STO are Combat Rescue and Special Tact.

In essence Rangers/Seals for the AF

Can you say fully operational and increasing size Osprey fleet! They are ramping up to 50 soon and now we need more ops guys to go in the back. :thumb:
