Since my son will join the class 2105 soon, and he is still 17 years old by the I day, How can he open the account at the navy credit union per the suggestion in the report package?
Thanks

I think you mean Navy Federal Credit Union. You can open an account online. That's what I have done for my kids. There is a branch at USNA and another one out by the Annapolis Mall.

I presume your question is based on your son's age of 17 - i.e. not yet 18. I would suggest you call the Navy Federal Credit Union office on the Yard.
Navy Federal Credit Union

Do not call the general number. Ask to speak to the USNA branch. I don't know where their call center is, but when I had questions last year, they didn't seem to know the particular issues that applied to a Midshipman.
I will bet they have dealt with this issue before.

If you feel there might be contractual issues; open a joint account. That's what we did without any questions.

A really weird thing about NFCU joint accounts . . . consider carefully which person you list first. For some incomprehensible IT reason, the second person listed on the account (the "joint" owner) REGARDLESS OF AGE has fewer on-line rights, despite the fact that the legal liability for the account is the same. For example, you cannot pull up old statements. That can be annoying if the second person listed on the account is the one doing the finances.
I have spoken to NFCU about this ad nauseum and they tell me it can't be fixed (at least as of a year ago). The only way to change it is to open an entirely new account. So, I suggest you put your son's name first, if they'll let you just so he has the most flexibility in terms of checking it, etc.

"What a terrible design", said the former software engineer of 40+ years experience.

Same problem with my regular bank - the first person's social security number is typically the one associated with the account. You can solve the problem by logging on line with the first person's logon info assuming you have it.

True. Prob ok with married folk. Parents might not want to give their info to their kids.
It is VERY poor design. And they don't tell you when you open the account. That one thing aside, NFCU has been terrific for me for many, many years.
