I'm currently reading Absolutely American, the book about life at West Point, and the author talks about the Discovery Channel doing some shows on the Academies. This book was written 1998-2002, so it may be a little outdated. But if anyone can tell me what the name of the shows were, and how to get my hands on a DVD or whatever, that would be great.

Usually shown by The Military Channel these days, the series is called "Inside America's Military Academies."

The three programs will be airing on May 27th beginning at 9AM.

Surviving the First Year

Military academies truly stand apart from other colleges and universities. In addition to the grueling basic training, these institutions boast unique physical and educational requirements - and rich traditions and history.

No Time Off for Summer

Sweat alongside cadets and midshipmen for six weeks of grueling summer training. Each faces and tries to overcome their own mental and physical limitations on land, in the air and at sea.

The Making of an Officer

Seniors at several military academies serve as examples of the high moral standards and honor each institution strives to instill in its students. Course work as well as extracurricular activities are often geared to enhancing these qualities.

There is also the National Geographic special Surviving West Point. I bought it on Amazon fairly cheap.

Thanks Luigi, we'll definitely catch that.
Anyone seen the movie "The Guardian"? Is it a pretty accurate portrayal of Coast Guard life?

I grinned when I read your question Zfam. I was curious about that as well. Son has been visiting some CG sectors/air stations over the last several months & I made him promise to ask that question at a recent stop & tell me what the guys & gals there thought. They told him it was indeed a true portrayal, especially that of the rescue swimmers and that they wished more people would take notice of one scene in particular where a group is listening to an actual CG officer, not an actor, talking about why they were so successful during Katrina. He explained in the movie that since the entire CG had the same training, a guy who trained in Alaska knew what the guy trained in Florida was thinking and knew how he would operate thus making things run quickly & smoothly. Can't recall the actual words but you kinda get the idea.

Line in the Sand will probably be along to answer if he gets some time from his busy schedule.
