I recently received a Congressional Nom, and along with the Letter of Assurance I have, that should mean I should be receiving my appointment! (if I am understanding this whole crazy process correctly) Does anybody else have both yet? This is as good a time as any to start making friends for the big, bad BEAST. I know for a fact none of my current friends will be there… they are all going to those boring ole' state colleges

same boat as you. and same with friends. i know a kid who's a junior right now who wants to go but that won't really matter next year

That's awesome... cant wait till BCT... actually I can but Oh Well... its all part of the process. I wish I knew more about what they actually go through at BCT because as far as I'm concerned, its nothing but yelling and push-ups.. They say there is time for fun but I dont see how that is humanly possible during a program like that

well from what i understood talking to current cadets, its a lot of physical training in the morning, but later in the day you have lots of academic and other tests so they know what classes to put you in. during 1st BCT you also learn most things about military life and customs, along with a bunch of AF specific stuff. 2nd BCT (out in Jack's Valley) is definetly one of the hardest things you will ever do in life, but everyone always says its a blast too. so really ur opinion of BCT just depends on the person and their outlook. if you look forward to it, then it wont be as bad as it could be or as bad as some say it is. but thats what ive heard. obviously i havent been through it yet so take what i'm saying with a grain (or probably more) of salt

btown13 & ryan13...Hi, I guess I'll be meeting you guys in BCT. I received my appointment earlier this month. BCT sounds hard, but I think I can do it. Challenging, but rewarding. Are you guys going to orientation? I am trying for the 13th & 14th of April.

af2012
23rd November 2008, 12:43 AM
all BCT is: yelling, pushups, flutter kicks, running, learning a lot of stuff, more physical exercise, intramurals( the "fun" time), and more crazy beat sessions. oh, and learning how to make your bed really well...in the dark. you are so exausted, you will learn to sleep standing up at attention.

I'm actually pretty excited about BCT.. I think. I'm always up for a challenge; the only scary thing is, I don't know what kind of challenge I'm getting into. But so far, sounds like around 4 of us are in for sure so far. Thats awesome. I'm definitely going to orientation (also to get boots), but I honestly haven't even thought of which session. Can somebody compare/contrast Orientation to Summer Seminar? I went to SS, but idk what orientation is all about. (Oh, and nice countdown packermatt)

SS is a minor intro to the Academy. the Doolie for a Day thing is TOTALLY not like how it really is. at orientation, most of the first day is briefings, then you leave your parents and get picked up by some random cadet. this is after class, so you just chill with them for the evening, watch them do homework. then the next day, you go to class with them. that's pretty much it. it's nice because you get to meet some of the upperclassmen. i still talk to my 'host' and the other people i met in her squad that night. I ended up in the squad she was in last year. so i already knew a few upperclassmen.

i think im going to go the 20th and 21st. in illinois all juniors have to take the ACT and PSAE that wednesday and thursday (23 & 24), while the rest of the high school gets those days off. So that week i will only go to school on friday. how nice...but i agree i can't wait to get back there. i went in mid september just to visit and that was a great experience so this should be even better

I'm definately going to get my boots too. I did SS too (first session, when did you go ryan13?) Thats ow I feel about BCT too. Ready for the challenge but afraid because I don't know what the challange is.

nope. the friday before the utah game, which was also a lot of fun. i think it was the 19th and 20th

btown13
24th November 2008, 05:11 AM
actually it was even better because it was the "cadet for a day" thing with make a wish. and also after classes that day there was a formation and a little ceremony to honor those academy grads who had died in the last year, culmination with a missing man f-16 formation fly-over, where one went totally vertical with afterburners right over the cadet area. it was pretty awesome

Can you guys tell me what the deal is with the boots? I thought you were to show up to basic training with just the clothes on your back.

Also, can you tell me about orientation in April? What is it, is it mandatory, etc.?

af2012
24th November 2008, 02:41 PM
you don't have to buy boots before, it's optional. I didn't and never had any problems with breaking them in during basic. i never had any blisters either. there is a transition period where you will be alternating between boots and tennis shoes to getting your feet and boots used to it. And if you buy your boots ahead of time, that's over $100 that you spent, or you can wait for a few months and just be issued them. you want to take as little stuff to Basic as you can, because you will be running all over with it, carrying it in your left hand, along with the other ton of stuff they issue that day. Everything can get real heavy, real fast. I showed up with the bare minimum, which is pretty much just paperwork and whatever personal items you need (hygine stuff).

Orientation is not mandatory. You get to spend the first day doing briefings about the Academy, then you go spend the night and next day with a cadet. it is here when a lot of people decide if the Academy is the right place for them or not. I already knew it was for me because I did a tour my sophomore year, and Summer Seminar Junior year. I would highly recommend orientation even if you have been to the Academy before, because you get to meet a lot of upperclassmen, and see how the Academy works after Recognition. this is important because if you want to "look" at the chapel or fountains or mountains or anything besides the person in front of you, go to orientation, or you will get busted during Basic for gazing.

Just say that thank you very much for the chance of receiving a nom from you but as I am already guaranteed of a place at USNA (loa) with the help of a nom, which I received whenever from so-and-so, I would like to very respectfully and gratefully decline your offer of an interview. I do not want to take nom spots away from other candidates equally well qualified.

Be humble, kind, and very respectful.

Your question is should you go to your congressman's interview if you already have an appointment?

Probably not.
You should give the Congressman's office a call. See if you can get the name and number for the Nomination's manager. Speak with that person and inform them of the situation. They will give you the proper advice.

Christcorp
24th November 2008, 11:12 PM
btown; and others with an appointment; congrats. 1 hell of a mile stone you've reached. Those with LOA or still waiting; just hang in there. There's a time for every purpose under heaven.

Now, for your question. (For anyone in similar situations). If you've already received an appointment; because you've got your nomination and everything else, then obviously you don't need any other nominations. However, you should present the option to those "WANTING" to nominate you. If you have the APPOINTMENT PACKAGE in your hands, then contact any rep/senator that you have nomination interviews scheduled with. Let them know that you received your appointment and ask them if they'd still like to interview you. 1) It's the professional thing to do. 2) It allows them (Senators/Rep) to talk among themselves to maximize their appointees. If you've got a "Presidential" nomination, then that gives both the academy and your state the flexibility to get more people in. I.e. A senator/rep wants to nominate more than 1 person, but they already have too many at the academy. If one of the candidates is eligible for a presidential, that doesn't count against the senator/rep and allows them to get another person from their state in.

So, the short of it is; the reps, senators, and academy has been doing this a long time. Give them the opportunity to say never mind and congratulations. They might still want to interview you (Which would be a simple technicality) because they might not have ANYONE to nominate and they want YOUR name on it. You're in a no lose situation. However, you may some day need their assistance in a matter. Make sure you give them the opportunity to say that any additional interviews aren't required. (Don't wait until the day of your interview. Call them the day after receiving your appointment and the SHOCK HAS WORN OFF). They will be excited for you. Later.... Mike.....

I can't believe we are starting to talk like that! It's so exciting and nervracking... I always get butterflys when I think about the fact that In 7 months I won't be a civilian... its crazy, but I CAN'T WAIT! Even BCT is starting to sound fun (in a twisted way, because I don't think any normal person would consider BCT the highlight of their Academy experience). I have always looked at other people talk about being in the Academy and I'm pumped that I can finally be in that extremely exquisite (for lack of a better adjective - - - brain block or something  ) group of people.

I CAN'T WAIT!!!

thanks for the advice just a mom and chirstcorp. i will definitely give them a call tomorrow. The office is only about 5 minutes away from my house though, so would it be better to go there and talk to the nominations coordinator in person? I dropped off my application there and stopped by another time, so i think the coordinator recognizes me.

Either way. They may be busy when you walk in. Maybe have his number in your cell phone and call just before getting there. Sounds convenient enough either way.

But now that some are starting to get appointments. Don't forget your "ABC's"

APPRECIATE: your senior year. Cherish every moment with your family and friends. You'll never have this time back again.

BRAINS: Use them. Don't get stupid and do something that will get you into trouble. Don't get hurt. And don't slack off and let your grades slide. Believe it or not, you can lose your appointment. You've worked real hard so far. Don't backslide.

CAPITALIZE: You've been accepted to the equivalence of an Ivy League school. You'll be receiving one of the best educations in the world. The Air Force Academy should not be your goal. The Air Force Academy should be a tool; a stepping stone; in reaching your goals. Make the most of it.

Congrats again. And best of luck to those still waiting. I know it seems like forever. The next few months will go so much faster than you think. Mark your calendars. Figure out orientation if you can make it. Any other visits. Christmas and spring break are not that far off. Make the most of the time you have left. Your lives are going to change forever. (For the good). And THANK YOU for being willing to accept such a responsibility. later... mike.....

unitedstatesAFA2013
27th November 2008, 07:37 PM
No Assurance Letter here, but I got one Senatorial nomination a while back, and, to what you guys were talking about (especially if you don't have an LOA like me), you are probably going to be told by your first Senator to cancel your other Senator's interview if you receive a nomination from them. This happened in my case.

When i also called my rep's office, they told me that you can only stack up certain nominations (and the more you have, the better). You can stack up any combination (eg: sen, rep, pres...pres, vice, sen...etc), except senators- who will most likely not even look at you when another has represented you. They want to give more people a chance of getting in. So in my case, even though i already have a nom, im still going to my second interview with my rep to have a better chance of being their first front pick, and getting noticed more by the academy.

13ryan13,

Same deal here. I just got my nom this weekend.

It's amazing I already know who a few of my classmates are.

Does it seem like we're pretty well ahead right now? I know that's irrelevant when next summer rolls around, but it seems like December is fairly early to have offers of appointment coming in. I don't know how many LOA's are usually handed out and when, so I have no idea where I stand there.

Thanks,
Geoff

You can call your senators to make sure you aren't missing out on any crucial information. I didn't hear from one of my senators for a while, so I called and found out that there were interviews. I hadn't gotten the letter yet saying I needed to schedule an interview, and found out I needed to RSVP by the next day. So, you might want to call them. oh, and waiting a long time is usual!:shake:

And orientation isn't until April, so there will be plenty of time!

Folks...

For those that have the LOA's in hand...CONGRATULATIONS!

Now...understand that they can be TAKEN AWAY if you screw up, slack off the rest of senior year, etc...etc...etc...

I've seen it too many times in the 14 years I've been an ALO!

So...

Congratulate yourself; pat yourself on the back. You've earned that right! ::smile:

Then get back to work!

I guess that's what they meant by the phrase "virtually assured."

I always vowed that I wouldn't fall victim to senioritis, and I'm not the type to get myself in trouble. I think this statement holds true for most of us who have worked so hard to get where we are.

Can I speak for all of us when I say that there's no way we would throw away this opportunity, and all that hard work just to be lazy?

flieger83; excellent advice and info. Can't tell you how many seniors get screwed by slacking. I've seen it with academy appointments as well as traditional college. This past spring; we had a student athlete who had been recruited by no less than 8 big name schools in the country. Everything was set with the college he wanted. Granted, he wasn't applying to the academy, so he didn't have those types of grades. However, he thought because he was NATIONALLY ranked; TOP 10; his ticket was written. He screwed around his senior year and his grade point dropped below the acceptable NCAA standards. The school he committed to rescinded their offer. He scrambled to all the other schools that made offers. They all said, thanks but no thanks. They said; go to a community college for a year and get your grades back up and we'll talk next year. He got discouraged. Graduated high school and isn't going to ANY COLLEGE currently.

Not saying this to scare anyone, but you should be. No, the academy isn't going to take away your appointment because you went from an "A" to a "B" in one of your classes. However; if your GPA goes from the 3.8-4.0 or whatever you received the appointment with; to a 3.2-3.4 because you pulled a couple of "C's" or "D's", then you better worry. Enjoy your senior year. Have fun. DON'T BE STUPID!!! Drinking, speeding, tickets, fights, accidents, broken bones, grades, etc.... You just passed one of the "HARDEST JOB INTERVIEWS" in the country. Don't waste it. Heed the words of flieger83. You've worked way too hard. What's another 6 or 7 months.

Oh, and for what it's worth, BCT isn't an automatic skate time either. Anything can happen. For what it's worth, a new basic was at inprocessing; went through the line; all the parents waiving good bye; he got on the bus; went to the cadet area; was getting off the bus; SLIPPED and FELL; blew out his knee; Had plane fair to go home a couple days later. And that's not even counting the average 80 or so that don't make it out of basic because of medical or they simply change their mind. (This year was a good one. Only about 40 didn't finish Basic). Nothing in life is guaranteed other than some day you will no longer be here. Best of luck to you. Sorry for the depressing post, but I've seen way too many young people back-slide in their endeavors and watched their dreams go down the pipe. Keep working hard. later... mike.....

What do you mean because of medical? Do they do another physical exam once you get there to make sure DoDmerb didn't miss anything?

Yes.

In some cases, cadet candidates will attempt to hide something from their medical history (asthma, for example, which becomes readily apparent during exercises at 7,000 feet) which would have DQ'd them from an appointment had it been disclosed.

There are others that incur an injury before I-day and do not report it. They show up in a leg cast or arm sling.

Then there are those who are injured or fall ill (eg. appendicitis) during BCT and are sent home.

Katienavy?
9th December 2008, 12:24 AM
Wait if you get even the slighest bit injured during Basic one gets sent home? Like that?!
Because I will probably most definitely get a cold with all that shouting
Is it the same for all the Academies???

Luigi59
9th December 2008, 12:33 AM
Wait if you get even the slighest bit injured during Basic one gets sent home? Like that?!

Everyone gets slightly injured. That's not an issue.

However, when an injury or illness prevents you from taking part in BCT (I think you have to complete 41 of 47 days? hornetguy could confirm the exact requirements) you risk being sent home.

Because I will probably most definitely get a cold with all that shouting

When the medical link between shouting and the cold virus is confirmed, you can worry. Until them, you'll be fine.

Is it the same for all the Academies???

No.

It is possible to be turned back on the first day or another day during basic.
If you are turned back through injury or illness, your spot is held for you to return the next summer and you join the next class.

The cadet Christcorp was referring to who slipped and fell - had a prior a knee injury. As I recall, he wasn't sure he was going to make I-day to begin with.

From what I read here - it seems that AFA is quick to turn cadets back.
Each academy seems to be different. Some kids do get sick or injured and do not get turned back. My daughter got blisters that got infected and turned into cellulitis at West point. Her foot and ankle blew up and she ended up on crutches for about 10 days but she completed all required parts of beast and was not turned back.
Some kids end up in the hospital for a day or two. If you get seriously ill, like mono or suffer an orthopedic injury that will require extensive pt or surgery then you can count on being turned back.
BTW - the service pays for your medical care to get you healthy again while you are a turn back.

Katienavy?

Ohhh that's GREAT of them!!
Is that for sure? Is there anything one can do to get that taken away? Like senioritis for incoming plebes & cadets?

PDub

It is reassuring, though, to know that your spot is held for you for next year, so all that hard work isn't lost due to a sprained ankle.

A lot of good info provided. However; this is very important; NONE OF THIS IS INTENDED TO SCARE YOU OR DISCOURAGE YOU. It is/was intended; at least from me; to let you know that getting the appointment to the air force academy is only the beginning.

As for being "Turned Back"; each year is a little different. This year for instance, the academy was a lot more forgiving. You still have to complete a certain number of days and hurdles. But, if you are willing to fight to keep your spot, the academy is willing to fight and help you. Remember, they didn't spend all the time and money just to send you home. They want you to succeed.

Realize that it is very difficult to get set back if you truly want to be there and are determined. In the athletic world we have a saying that "Players play hurt; they don't play injured". In other words, if your feet are "Sore" from all the marching and hiking, suck it up and keep it to yourself. If you're getting a sore throat from screaming, don't complain about it. The academy will not take chances. If you say your not feeling well, they will take you from what you're doing and have you checked out. Know the difference between "Hurt" and "Injured". If you are injured, definitely let them know. If you are hurt, keep it to yourself. If you're an athlete, you know what I'm talking about. If you don't understand, maybe someone else can decipher.

But most importantly, this was a prelude of things to come. You still have a long way between now and then. My son was a multi-sport varsity all state athlete in high school. He received his appointment the 1st week of November on the same exact day as the state championship football game. (Which they won). I didn't tell him about the "Envelope in the mail" until AFTER the game. I didn't want to break his concentration. A week later, he was also recruited by the academy to play football. He took it upon himself to forgo the rest of school year's sports involvement. Not that he had to, but because he didn't want to take that risk of a broken leg, concussion, etc... in soccer, baseball, etc... That was his choice. Obviously, that's easier to do when you actually have an appointment in your hand in November instead of having to wait until March. The point is, that's how bad he wanted the academy. He used the new free time to concentrate on maintaining his GPA, spending time with his girl friend and other friends, time with his family, and making the most out of his senior year. But he was "HELL BENT" on not getting injured, getting in trouble; messing up a class; etc...

Each of you are old enough to make up your own decisions. There's a lot of things that you will continue to do. Very low risk. However, there are some things in your life that you may want to back off of. Maybe getting a christmas present present to go skydiving for the very first time is exciting, but maybe not the right time to try it. Maybe it will be very tempting to hang out every minute out of school with your friends because you won't see them much, if at all, in the future. But maybe you should think about maintaining that GPA that got you into the academy. Anyway; as I said; this post was not intended to scare or discourage you. It was intended to make you realize that you must now start making some very difficult and mature choices in your life. Determine what is important to you and prioritize your actions. Best of luck to all of you. later... mike....

It is reassuring, though, to know that your spot is held for you for next year, so all that hard work isn't lost due to a sprained ankle.

One CAVEAT!!!! You have to "Take the oath" and officially be part of the academy. I believe that the young person who slip coming out of the bus, never made it to the oath, so he had to start all over again with nominations, appointments, etc.... Once you are "Officially" part of the academy and are training, then yes, if you are injured to the point where you can't finish, you will be released and afforded the slot next year if you want it. It will be suggested that you attend a community college or similar to keep up on math, science, and other academics. But you have to take the oath and be part of the cadet wing first. Getting injured 4-wheeling a week before BCT starts does not allow you to keep the appointment. later... mike...

The kid this last summer who tore up his knee falling off the bus was supposed to be in my squad. And it's good advice to play hurt, not injured. I got injured a week into Basic, sucked it up for 2 weeks before going to orthopedics. they advised me to go home, get surgery and come back next year. But that was not an option in my opinion. THey were allowing me to continue, so that's what I did. I ended up hurting myself much worse through the rest of Basic, constantly at the doctors, hospital, being pulled off courses (not willingly), but I finished. It takes hard work and tons of determination. When your classmates are getting beat all around you and you just watch, it sucks. It's worse than getting beat. I ended up getting surgery, and now can't do anything physical until about mid-Feb. It sucks, but it's do-able. I should be able to do most of the stuff for Recognition, and if I can't, I'll still probably do it anyway.

Oh, one girl broke her back during the O-course, and she still finished Basic.

My friend was working the O-course as an EMT when that happened. Interesting story.

If you are turned back through injury or illness, your spot is held for you to return the next summer and you join the next class.

A cadet returning from a medical turn-back must still pass a medical evaluation to be allowed to return. One of the 2011 cadets who was injured during BCT wanted to return with the class of 2012, but was denied because he had not recovered fully enough to pass another physical evaluation. Even though the Academy will work to get a turn-back into the next class, it is never 100% guaranteed.

Getting injured 4-wheeling a week before BCT starts does not allow you to keep the appointment.

Actually it could. My daughter went to prep school - MMI- with a guy who blew out his knee two weeks before R-day. His spot is being held for him in the class of 2013.

If something happens and you do get hurt you must call admissions. They will instruct you on how to proceed. They have spent a lot of time and money getting you to accept your appointment - they want to keep you if possible.

Yes - on I-day (or R-day) you do undergo a complete physical. If you don't pass the physical you probably won't be staying.

My DODMERB physical was so laid back. The doctor barely looked me over. The nurse did all the testing, and he did the regular stuff.

btown13
10th December 2008, 01:57 AM
my DODMERB physical was also pretty laid back. the guy who tested most of the stuff had a sister in the Army, so we talked a little. the actual doctor just looked things over, read my medical history report, and sent me on my merry way...

Christcorp

It's a basic physical. Make sure you aren't sick, hurt, broken parts, obvious issues, etc... "Turn your head and cough" type of stuff. Not exactly like DODMRB, but different in the respect that they are looking for specific things. Something that changed in the last 6-9 months or something hidden. later...mike...

There are turnbacks on I-DAY...DID I scare you

Calm down and breath now!

The turnbacks were kids that hurt themselves tripping off the bus and other things. I do recall a turnback of a cadet that was returning from a turnback.

All of that being said...do what many people say to do when you get the appt. Wrap yourself in bubble wrap and don't let anybody cough on you. Getting mono the week b4 I-day would definetly stink!

Keep in shape, continue to play your sports, but don't be reckless

However, I was interviewed by my honorable congresswoman and got the nomination via phone call and also they told me that I am getting a LOA in about a week. My USAFA application says I am not competitive, but I was once candidate of 2007. I am currently in AFROTC and planning to finish first year college. What are my chances of getting in (appointment?)

lots of appointees dont get LOAs.. only about 200 go out

Christcorp
28th December 2008, 05:16 AM
Most definitely. LOA's are only given out to those who are being assured an appointment if they get their nomination and/or medical qualifications. There will be a certain number that have already received a nomination prior and therefor don't require an assurance. They will be given appointments. No different than waiting til march. Just that those are given earlier. Some as early as November. Some between then and March. It's rolling. Those appointments are similar to LOA in the respect that they are individuals that the academy consider to be no brainers. In other words; based on their historical data; they are individuals who have scored high enough overall that they will definitely be in the top 17% +/-.

Remember; approximately 1700 appointments will be offered of the original 9500-10,000 who originally applied. Of those 1700 offers, approximately 1300-1400 will actually accept the offers. If less than that accept the offers, the academy will go to their waiting list and make some late offers in April and May. Even possibly June. Until they reach their target goal of 1300-1400. That target however changes each year based on how many are still currently at the academy. Not that it's the academy's goal to get rid of cadets; it's not. Just that historically, they know that of the 1300-1400 they accept coming in on June 25th (This year); that approximately 85 won't make it out of BCT. (This year was a lot less. Only about 45 didn't make it out of BCT). Then, they will lose another couple hundred in the first 2 years. Upon graduation, the final graduating class will be between 950-1000 +/-. If the academy could guarantee that those they brought in were guaranteed to make it all the way through and would stay, they would ONLY take in around 1000 to be cadets. later... mike...

packermatt7
28th December 2008, 02:31 PM
What is the main reason for not making it through BCT? I would assume it would be medical, but is there any other reason? And if you do break your ankle and can't complete basic, they hold your spot for another year, right?

Pima
28th December 2008, 02:50 PM
You become a turnback for medical reasons. The real issue is than being cleared through medically (think bullseye on your back). There was someone on CC who was turned back in 07, returned in 08 and was turned back immediately. Now that is why everybody says as soon as you get your appt, don't be doing anything foolish.

I also wouldn't worry about turnbacks, you can't start plotting the what ifs on something you have no control over...heat exhaustion during BCT is nothing you can control...jumping over your deck railing to show off is a whole different story

A lot of the "Risks" that people talk about have to be an individual decision. My son played both Football and Soccer in High School. Lettered and started for all 4 years in both sports. Soccer here is in the spring, because there's not enough kids normally in the state to play both football and field a team for soccer. Anyway; my son received his appointment the 1st week on November 2007. The exact same day his team won the state championship 5A football game. (first time in 34 years for his school). I knew he received his appointment prior to the football game that day, but didn't tell him until after the game. Didn't want to distract him. A couple of days later, the coaches from the academy football team called to also recruit him for the team. Needless to say, it was the greatest week of his life. But then he had to decide what to do with soccer and the rest of his year. Being football was over with for the season; and they wanted him to play on the air force team; and he already received his appointment; he chose to not take the risk by playing soccer that spring. (Believe it or not, injuries are as common in soccer as in football).

So, if pole vaulting is something you think you want to continue with at the academy, and possibly make the track and field team, then continue with the sport. If it's not something you think will be of much of your time at the academy or wherever you choose to go to school, then skip it and find other activities.

The bottom line is; the academy should not be your goal. The academy is a means to reaching your goal. Depending on what your goals are, you need to decide at what level of risk you are going to take. Make sure however that you still enjoy your life and the time you have left in high school. You'll never get this time back again. Best of luck. Later... mike...

(Believe it or not, injuries are as common in soccer as in football)...

Not true, not even close.

HS football causes almost 3 times as many injuries as hs soccer during games, and almost twice as many during practices.

An epidemiologic comparison of high school sports injuries sustained in practice and competition (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_7089/is_/ai_n28511003)

High School Sports Injuries

Here are the study's top three sports for the number of injuries sustained during competition:

Football: 12.09 injuries per 1,000 games
Girls' soccer: 5.21 injuries per 1,000 games
Boys' soccer: 4.22 injuries per 1,000 games

And here are the top three sports for injuries sustained during practice:

Football: 2.54 injuries per 1,000 practices
Wrestling: 2.04 injuries per 1,000 practices
Boy's soccer: 1.58 injuries per 1,000 practices

Christcorp
29th December 2008, 01:50 AM
Well luigi; we'll just have to agree to disagree. In 4 years of hs football and 4 years of hs soccer; my son has had more injuries in soccer. 2 concussions, 2 gashes (Requiring stitches); and numerous knee/ankle issues. In football; he's had his bell rung a couple of times and racked a couple of times (Guy thing). But my point wasn't to say which one was more dangerous. Point was that any sport has it's risks. For my son, soccer had more injuries. But there are risks in pole vaulting, track, basketball, etc... I guess the "Stamp Club" would be safe. Although paper cuts are probably very common. later... mike...

Okay, I am thinking your congresswoman's office confirmed you have her nomination. The LOA's come from the academies. LOA means "letter of assurance" or "guaranteed offer of appointment" which is given if the academy wants to give you an assurance before you've satisfied all of the requirements. For example if they consider you highly competitive but you still have to take your CFA or get a nomination or get a medical waiver, etc. So, the member of congress has no say in you getting an LOA, all they can do is nominate you for an appointment. The nomination is only one of the many pieces you need in order to get an appointment, albeit an important piece. Look elsewhere on this forum for statistics on number of nominations versus number of appointments and further to actual appointments accepted by appointees to each academy. Maybe you were referring to your appointment arriving now that you have a nomination and LoA? Sorry, just trying to clear that up :-) Congratulations on your nomination!!

Christcorp
3rd January 2009, 04:37 PM
You are exactly correct MarylandMom. LOA's are given when you are missing a Nomination AND/OR DODMRB issues. And of course the academy is saying that you and your application walks on water. If you've already had your DODMRB physical and you've passed; now that you have a nomination; there is no need to get you an LOA. You would get an appointment if the academy thinks you are what they want. So like MarylandMom said; if you have an LOA already; then your MOC was probably referring to you getting an appointment. Maybe THEY know something ahead that you don't. Trust me; the academy definitely talks with MOC staff. Many times the MOC knows about an appointment before the candidate. Sometimes; like in my son's case; he had an APPOINTMENT in hand, signed, accepted, and submitted; and the MOC was trying to schedule interview appointments with him.

If you have questions about what your MOC said; you can contact their staff. "Same people who set up your interview". Ask them to clarify. As MarylandMom said; the MOC doesn't give out LOA's. later... mike.....

Congratulations. I have received two nominations and am now waiting to hear if I have been accepted or not. I just had a quick question, and don't feel like you have to answer it if you don't want to. What were your SAT scores?

With the holidays, it seems to be taking longer to get the appointment status change. Our son's nomination letter was dated Dec. 19 but did not show up on the AFA online site until last week and then yesterday his status changed to appointment offered (he had an LOA from Oct. 14). However, I think our delay was our MOC not submitting the names to the AFA until mid Jan. when the MOC had notified us of nomination Dec. 19.

I just have a few quick questions;

1.) I got an appointment and accepted already... Where do I sign up for an orientation session?

2.) I happen to know a junior at the Academy, is there anyway I can request him as the cadet I tour / stay with or does he have to request me?

Thanks

Dont remember if it was on the website or in the appointtee package they sent, or on the website but it will come out soon. Yes you can stay with your friend as long as he is open to it. He will just have to get you at the feild house.

Weston - changing back to 'Candidate' is a good thing. Same thing happened to my son. If I remember timelines correctly in DS case, status changed to 'candidate' on a Wednesday. Son called his admissions officer with questions on what was happened on Friday - he indicated DS package would be reviewed again following Monday. Appt. package arrived the Thursday after that. Status didn't change to 'Appt Offered' until the following week.
It's all good- Congrats:thumb:

kid has a couple nominations, silly good scores, nice cfa - blah blah blah

So today he gets an envelope from USAFA - thinking very happy thoughts. When he gets home from cleaning church at about 9 - gets the envelope, opens it up and ...

It is an AFA recruiting DVD - telling him he should really consider applying to the Air Force Academy.

In case he gets something else from the Academy - what does the "appointment packet" actually look like? Thanks.

Mainly conditional appointments which means you arent officially in unless your grades are good.

My son's was like that as well. USAFA Admissions web site first showed "Appointment Offered" about a week before the package came.

It took about another two weeks after he sent back the paperwork for the website to change to "Appointment Declined."

My guess is it depends on how far away you are from the Academy and how good the mail delivery service is in your area.

General Regni gave a briefing a few nights ago, and he said that for 2013 over 330 people have already accepted their appointments. The appointment you recieve in the mail is the offical appointment. You won't be getting anything else, except for a nice certificate from your ALO.

The Offer finally arrived today.

You all should ask your parents to follow you every day to the mailbox... I sure wish my parents would have. I performed a rather, em, graceful jig for my neighbors after I saw the package :yay:

Keep the faith! :thumb:

Haha, someone should have been video taping that. Days and days of you walking and checking. Putting your head down in disgust, then when it came...

lol that would be an awesome video montage.

Then right after you dancing it cuts to you getting screamed at and doing pushups at BCT.

I kinda stared at it for a few seconds. Then I pretty much yelled, which startled the person across the street. I then sprinted back to my house, leapt over a bench, and ripped open the door. At which point, my mother yelled at me not to slam the door and I told her I just saved her $403,000.
