View Full Version : Question about prettyness?

Okay, so my mom has been bugging me about how I hand wrote the addresses on my nom letters, and I'm just wondering: does it really matter?
Does the appearance of the letters really make a difference, or is it as long as the content is solid?

As one of those naggy moms~it shows your attention to detail. First impressions are hard to change. Thank your mom for her willingness to ensure you have all the opportunities available to be able to pursue your goals.

Appearance is a pretty big factor. You want to be seen as a proffesional. Everything counts in the end and if they're trying to decide between you and an equally competitive candidate, the way you presented yourself will likely be a factor.
An example of this is bringing a well organized folder of all forms filled throughout your application proccess to the entireview. They already have the forms they need so it's not something they expect you to do but it makes you look like you're on top of things.

^^^ so does using spell check....

Hee hee, I was just thinking the same thing! All in good fun of course:shake:
Going to an entireview sounds very stressful. But I suppose for a proffesional it wouldn't be that hard.

It's called a type-o. And appearently I did well enough for USMA and USAFA which is more than the people laughing can say. Does it really call for going off-topic?
To OP: Use a spell check on everything that is turned in. Although it's not important on here (as some people seem to think it is), it looks bad on your part if you didn't seem to correct your work to them.

I'd say it never went off topic. Yes appearance does matter.

So they can't just say I took the time to actually write things out neatly?

Oh and by the way, everyone knows that I'm talking about the actual envelope I'm going to mail it in right? I typed all the apps.

You can do it either way but when you receive envelopes, all the addresses are typed unless it's from a friend or family member. Official things look better typed.

Now let's not freak the child out. DS did not type any of his envelopes and he got all of the noms he applied for (both sen, and cong). I can't be sure, but I am betting the envelope gets tossed immediately, there is no need to keep it since your address is on the app.
Don't handwrite the app, but the envelope is fine.

Neoseeker - don't worry about it. Some aide in the congressman's office will open the mail and toss the envelope. No need to type the envelope.
IMO - make sure all parts of the application and neat, clear and readable, that you follow direcitons (including where to mail the application to) and that the application is completed by you.

Wow, I'm sorry I was just kidding around. I guess there is no room for fun here, I will make sure to never joke around again! It is obvious that you are very superior to me, you are correct I have never been accepted at either the USMA or the USAFA. I will never try to lighten the mood or make someone smile again.

kpwehope: Don't let those comments get to you. Some of us notice "typos" and misspelled words, while others don't notice them. Some of the posters on this site are about to embark on a whole new adventure, and are probably getting nervous. This comes across as being a bit testy to other posters...try not to let it bother you. Some people are just now noticing the spell check option on the upper right of this page...

I am with Mom on take it in stride. I never hit spell check on my posts, I do go back and re-read them, and correct any glaring errors, otherwise, if someone wants to grade me on typos, they have more time on their hands than I do!
Plus, I am too lazy to download the spell check!
This should be a friendly forum to support applicants, candidates, cadets and their family. Sometimes we do have heated debates, but the information is the important aspect, not the i before e rule after c.

Exactly why I said in my original post "all in good fun" just joking around and trying to lighten the mood. I don't go around correcting everybody's grammar, I really don't care. Like I said just trying to have some fun. I will not do it again.

Aw kpwehope, don't worry about it - R-day is right around the corner and America's Finest is just getting a little antsy.
By this time next week he will no longer have all the answers. jk!

Since I was the person who suggested the use of spell check, I should own up to the fact that I did so to lighten the paranoia created over, gosh, handwriting the address of an envelope....while I did not mean to belittle AF personally, I was amused by suggesting the need for a professional appearance by typing an address on an envelope from a post that had at least two fundamental typo's...hopefully AF will accept my good wishes for a successful beast and career ...

A typo is when you hit the wrong key. When you misspell the same word twice in one post, you are showing you don't know how to spell the word. Not a big deal...most of us don't run and get the dictionary while typing our posts...and honestly, I think "professional" looks better with the two "f's." Fortunately, the computers that the new cadets will be issued in August have a spiffy spell check, so such glaring errors will be eliminated. I for one hope AF continues to have all the answers at beast; I hear it's good for each squad to have an "answer man." The other cadets appreciate having someone who knows a lot, and the cadre like having a "go-to" guy. I think it's all going to work out just swell.
Happy Beast to all you future new cadets! :thumb:

I never noticed a spell check on this forum.
It was a type-o. It's possible for it to happen twice. Oh and I wasn't saying I was better than you in any way. I just wanted to point out that I always check how I spell when it matters. Applying for college for example. But if it makes you feel better to think that I don't know how to spell then so be it. I'll take a hit to increase your self-esteem.
Beast will be just fine. I'll make sure to tell you guys how great it was in August. Sure, it will be difficult at times but I will get through it in one piece. The cadre in Beast can't be much different than real drill sergeants which are easy to deal with once you know how.

AF-Look I was only kidding around as I made clear even in the first post, just trying to make you smile. I then apologized for hurting your feelings, there was no ill will intended. You have taken this way too serious, I'm not try to "boost my self-esteem" or anything of the sort. Just a very small joke that you seem to be unable to handle. Again I apologize, I wish you the best at your academy.

I didn't mean to direct that at you. I know you said you were joking but you weren't the only (or first) one that said something about it. It was just generalized to those who keep making comments about me (such as that I'm nervous about Beast when I'm actually excited and can't wait). It's all good. :thumb: I'm just not that amused by being made fun of by people unless they are my friends or know me. I apologize for directing anything at you and now know you didn't mean any harm.

None of us are making fun of you...but we are poking fun at you. There's a big difference. Some candidates arrive at beast with a reputation, and will therefore be razzed. You will not be the only one, I am sure. I would not be surprised to hear later on that upon arrival, the cadre knew your screen name and called you "AF" all summer. It happened last year to someone else. When you go to the range, I am sure someone will say "one shot, one kill" to you. It happens. Most cadets who have not flown under the radar find a way to deal with the extra attention, as I am sure you will as well. Have a nice trip to NY this weekend and best of luck to you at beast. We parents hope to hear that all the new cadets make it through beast. If George Rash can make it through beast, so can everyone else!

America's Finest -
Beast will be fine and you will get through it in one piece - stay healthy and uninjured! That much is true.
Beast is a lot different than dealing with drill sergeants. Your knowledge and experience as an Army Brat will serve you well and certainly give you and edge.
However, expect to be challenged - physically and mentally. Develop thicker skin and don't take it all personally. Be humble.
Beast and the entire West Point experience is designed to be challenging and remove you from your "comfort zone". In some of your posts you appear to have somewhat of a chip on your shoulder. If so, it will be knocked off. quickly.
Many New Cadets find Beast to be fun, mostly. If you enjoy the out doors and being physically active it will be fun. Nearly all of you will make it through to A-day.
Keep in mind, Beast, for most Cadets is not the most difficult part of West Point. The challenges will continue.
Be excited, have a great 6 weeks - and when the Mom's make a little fun at a typo or two, laugh it off with a little humilty. Good Luck!
