Does anyone know how admissions views the American Legion's Boys State program?

Officer from Annapolis came to our home to meet our son....said they rate Boys State highly...(although my son did not go to Boys State because he went to Summer Seminar instead...)

I've heard the same. Son went to Boys State, and was asked to return this year as a counselor (they pick 2 per "city") He can't attend because of other conflicts and it ends just a week before report day to USNA. Son was told by MOC panels that the MOC's and the Academies rate it pretty high.

I'm sure it can't hurt. I did it in High School. I read somewhere that it was started to counter fascist youth groups that had been established in Europe during the 1930s. For me, it gave off sort of a creepy uber-nationalist vibe which I felt was too jingoistic and politically one-sided (although well-intentioned, I guess). That is obviously a personal opinion. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Very important, My son attended in 2007, because you must learn to work with others and show leadership skills.

Boys State

My son attended in 09. We were told by recruiters it was looked upon highly.

If you can go to Boys State then by all means GO!! However, my son could not due to NASS conflict...but Academy did actually write down on his app that he was offered the Boys State spot from his High School , but could not attend for Academy reasons...so it is very highly rated in the eyes of the Academy...(plus, everyone my son knew that went loved it!!) GREAT oppourtunity!! :thumb:

Okay. I went last summer and I was nominated to Boys Nation by an Army LT who was a councilor there. Didn't want to spend another week in the political realm, but I put down on my app that I was nominated to boys nation.

It's viewed as a leadership position, like Team Captain or Eagle Scout. And if you look on the admissions statistics, you will see that a good percentage of the class attended Boys/Girls State or Nation

Boys' State and Girls' State are important events for young people so far as USNA is concerned. Ohio's has a college fair about mid-week and I have attended the event for the last 5 years. It is a high value event and it shows initiative and leadership among the students participating. Consider also Hugh O'Brien Youth camps and other events of that nature. They look good on your resume and you do get value for your effort.

It all depends upon how well you perform at the event, but yes, you can make points by being selected to participate and shining in your performance.
