I applied to the Air Force Academy, got a Primary Nomination, and was totally set to attend, when I got a medical disqualification for dyslexia. I submitted my files, believing a waiver would arrive soon due to a variety of factors, but it is yet to appear.
My question is, will this limit me from joining ROTC in college?

Yes. The standards used for the Academies are commissioning standards which must be passed in order to be commissioned in the service.

ROTC students usually do the DODMERB exam after being selected for the scholarship and there may be a slightly different waiver process, but since you have already done the exam you would likely only have your package reviewed instead of an entire new physical.

KP2001 is right about the common standards. I believe that once you are into the waiver process that you can get a different result between the branches becuase each operates their own waiver review board. So it is possible that the Army might grant a waiver for a DQ condition that the Air Force would not. However, I suspect that within the Army branch there would not be a difference between a SA and ROTC.

DoDMERB uses the Medical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, and Induction. Except for some vision standards, these apply to all for a DoDMERB determination.

Services and programs within Services, may grant waivers. These waivers decisions "may" end up being different for an Academy and an ROTC program within a Service AND between Services.

The technical "processes" for waivers are ALL different for the Academies and ROTC programs. To be reviewed for waiver consideration however, applicants are not required to do anything AND procedures are as follows:

1. All Service Academies = If determined by DoDMERB to NOT meet medical standards AND if determined by the respective Admissions offices to be competitive for an offer of appointment, Admissions will deirect their medical folks to consider a medcial waiver.

2. All 4 year ROTC programs = If determined by DoDMERB to NOT meet medical standards AND if offered a scholarship, all applicants will be considered for a medical waiver.

3. All ROTC Campus Based Scholarships = If determined by DoDMERB to NOT meet medical standards, the applicant's Commander determines if he/she will request waiver consdieration on behalf of the applicant.

4. "If" a person doesn't apply to an Academy and/or ROTC program, that is the ONLY guarantee that a waiver will NOT be issued.:thumb:
