DS thought it might be in the next few weeks. Not sure if that was wishful thinking or not. 
They have a list of criteria that needs to be completed~PKTs, ring design and other class obligations. In the past, it has not been a specific day or month for that matter.
Figured I'll know when the phone bill increases to included 7 days a week instead of just Sundays.

As far as I know, Recognition does not occur on any specific day. DS said, as he left to go back for the term, "Maybe you'll get a call at 5 o'clock in the morning some day soon to tell you we've been recognized." I sure hope so!
Who makes the decision to recognize the class? I know there's the list of tasks to be accomplished, but do I correctly gather that there are also less objective criteria?

as one of those first classmen i can tell you don't bother getting your hopes up. it's not going to be for several more weeks from what i'm hearing from the powers that be. honestly, i think the biggest thing that i'm seeing is that the plebes have yet to do anything to impress the rest of the regiment. they aren't working together and standing as a unit yet. this is the biggest reason that i see why things aren't going so quickly for them.
Is2day4him: Can you shed some light on the process? Who makes the decision(s) about recognition - the CO's? The upperclassmen? (Is there some sort of of ballot process, or is this sort of double secret "need to know"?) (I'm sorry, I don't mean to denigrate this by being facetious, it's just that nobody seems to know . . .)
The issues you cite in your post - the plebes have yet to do anything to impress the rest of the regiment; they aren't working together and standing as a unit - make some sense, but they're kind of vague and subjective. Who decides when they're standing as a unit? (Not that it's really any of my business; please forgive my curiosity.)

it's mostly up to the firstclassmen really.
when they complete the training that the training staff has set up and have shown themselves capable of working together, then the training staff will approach the commandant and supe and get the approval to recognize the class.
my observations are indeed vague and subjective, but they're very common views among firstclassmen. the plebes have sucked royally as far as spirit missions are concerned, they fold under pressure, they don't help each other out, and are essentially just not bold enough to be recognized. honestly the whole recognition thing is about when the rest of the regiment feels that the plebes have earned their place in the culture and can handle additional freedoms. honestly, i haven't seen these plebes mature much since about september or october. they're still doing very dumb things (i.e. using tasers on classmates), not helping each other out, not knowing their required plebe knowledge, etc...
to sum it all up, unless they get on the ball SOON, i'll be rather upset if they get recognized this year at all. it's not about trying to spite them or saying we had it so much harder or any of that. it's that this class has not shown the fortitude required to be considered "one of us". i'm not saying that it's all their fault. however, they need to grow up a lot or it's really going to suck for them later. and with that, it'll just make the downward spiral continue, as the apathetic, unmotivated, entitlement mentality propagates and brings this school to it's demise.

USAFA class of 2013 was recognized last Saturday.

This information is obviously dated but....For the class of 2011
1. Pass ten PKTs with a 90% collective average. Each PKT is to consist of 10 questions from the appropriate section of the Bearing’s Book.
2. The class must honor and pay tribute to the 142 to the RC/RTO/RTOA’s approval.
3. The class must honor the victims of 9/11 to the RC/RTO/RTOA’s approval.
4. The class must spend three Saturdays performing three community service projects approved by the RTOA – this need not be done all on one Saturday. (ie. Henry Viscardi School, Soup Kitchens, Cleaning Great Neck Train Station)
5. The class must march a drill card to the RTO/RDCO/RTOA’s approval. Each company will compete against the rest.
6. The class must pay tribute to the armed services by singing each service’s hymn at lunch from memory.
7. The class must shine the War Memorial Bell and Reg Row Binnacle to the RTOA’s approval.
8. Each company will paint a merchant marine related mural approved by the RTO/RTOA.
9. The class must give five presentations on historical leaders with focus on each leadership style (RTO/RTOA to give first presentation as example).
10. The class must present a historical story of the seven cadets who earned the Merchant Marine’s Distinguished Service Medal.
11. The class must obtain a letter from the Superintendent stating that the plebe class has performed well and are deserving of recognition.
12. The class must draw the 1/c ring on Barney Square the Thursday night before Ring Dance.
13. Attend five Leadership Reaction Courses as designed by the RTO/RTOA to instill critical thinking, teamwork, and character development.
14. The class must pass three surprise, objective uniform inspections with a class average of 90%. The purpose of this is to create in the class a habit
of always maintaining a clean and professional uniform.
15. Each company must hold 10 debates, during tattoos, on current events/legislation, to encourage critical thinking and discussion.
- Spirit missions are to be done with the RTO/RTOA’s knowledge and explicit approval (in writing) and 85% of the class is to participate.
- The following are items that the class must complete their plebe year but do not count as recognition steps:
o Design class shirt
o Design class ring
o The class must support all athletic teams and have each team captain sign off when they are satisfied with the class’s performance. All home events against USCGA must be attended.
o The class must return to their school and take part in the visitation program or work in Admissions by Christmas Break.
As you can see there is a lot more to being recognized than simply passing 10 PKTs. The cooperation and approval of the first class is essential. without their help it will not happen.

Interesting that USAFA gives its cadets a specific date for recognition....hmmmm. Don't know if that is a good thing or not. Seems like the unknown date might keep cadets on their toes a bit more.
But, anyway, my kid at CGA is holding his breath for wardroom carryon. Maybe someday soon he will see his food again.

According to this site, 2013 is on track. With the varying leadership changes, expectations, subjectiveness etc. etc., Recognition does vary.
Could not find info on 2011, but here are the dates for the other two classes at KP right now, with 2013:
2010 - Recognized very early on Feb. 12, 2007
2012 - Recognized on April 16, 2009
So, 2013 did not "beat" 2010, and has not taken as long as 2012..............yet

Mud Pit this year??
So are they going to use the normal area for the mud pit?? I would suggest that Barney Square be used this year!!!

And my recollection is that when 2010 was recognized so early, there were all sorts of comments about how easy they had it and predictions about the demise of KP as a consequence. Some things never change - each class is the worst ever

Does anyone know if the Class of 2013 is allowed to have their phones given to them (for good) before recognition? Or is that an earned privilege to be given during/after recognition?
Can't remember when we got recognized...back in the day as my boys would say..in the 70's , but I do remember it was warm and I think the blossoms were on the cherry trees. It was a fun filled, proud day filled with fire hoses and mud! To all those who are at the Academy now, enjoy these days to the max. To those who receive appointments to the class of 2014: CONGRATULATIONS! I can't understand it, but my son is waiting to hear on his appointment status....to COAST GUARD! Go Second Company Home of the Radical 2's!
If you want another first classmens opinion I don't think the plebes will be recognized anytime soon. In fact I wrote an email recently requesting they not be recognized and my reasoning is valid. The plebes are not doing what plebes are supposed to be doing. They are walking where only upperclassmen are supposed to be walking, not squaring, saluting 1/c and when a first classmen tries to correct them...a 3 bar no less...they blow them off. In my opinion if they don't get their act together then we can always wait till the default date of graduation to recognize them. And as istodayforhim said they have not done anything to really impress the 1/c. So parents if you want your kids to be recognized before May pass the word for your kids to straighten up and listen to the 1/c. Also do something insanely awesome that will make the 1/c say ok that was killer we should recognize them. If they start doing what they're supposed to then I will be the first one to recommend recognition. Until then I'm not impressed and want to see more unity with the class.
