I'm a principal nominee congressional wisconsin district number 5 to USMA. Not to mention i also have a second nomination to USMA through the Senator, Senator Herb Kohl. I was denied appointment yesterday, my lifelong aspiration, after i was told I had everything wrapped up in a box. I am planning on appealing, and fighting back, because this is ludacris. I'm beyond upset. I need to know what the laws are protecting and governing a primary nominee, because to my understanding the pnom is guaranteed appointment. I plan on taking my case the my congressman, please any thoughts? I am medically and physically qualified, yet they still find a way to deny me? What the hell? Please help, your concern is much appreciated.

I believe the principal nominee is given an appointment if they are found medically, physically and scholastically/academically qualified.

Have you gotten in touch with your MALO or admissions group? I would go here and find out what happened.

I just read your DoDMERB thread. Even though it was a mistake on your part and we all make those when we are young, maybe it has something to do with the two citations that you discussed. Young mistake that many have made but can carry with you. The powers to be at West Point may have decided not to give an appointment for this reason.

I'm so sorry to that you are going through this. It's hard after working so hard for something to not get the outcome you dream of.

Good luck.

A prinicple nomination is not a guaranteed appointment. Far from it. You must be deemed qualified by the admissions board.
Your question should be directed to your regional commander as to where the weakness is in your package.

Well after talking to my regional commander yeah, those couple of citations i recieved years ago is the only thing they decided to halt me from appointment. But i refuse to believe this is the end all say all. I am triple qualified, i have two nominations, as well as a principal, but there are certain laws governming the direct appointment to someone like me who is fully qualified. They are trying to tell me there were more competitive people in front of me but this doesn't seem right, I cant see how they can do this to me, I meet all the admissions requirements! :'[. I'm going to be in contact with my congressman and explain to him, hopefully he can do something about this because I am far more deserving of this than mst people in leau of my other infractions! Please I know something can be done about this I came way too far.

Do whatever you have to do and schedule a face to face meeting with admissions ASAP, tomorrow if possible (yes drive the 10-12 hours). Present all documentation including citation info. Good Luck....

You are openly admitting a COUPLE of citations. Every candidate will be required to go through a "security" clearance. Maybe you lost the principle because of the security clearance.

The military is not just about about grades, it is about the entire package which includes character.

The SA is stating the WCS is not the be all end all. They are stating CHARACTER matters.

Sorry, I realize that is a hard lesson to learn, but it will make you a better officer in he future. Maybe you will win this fight, maybe you won't. The important thing to take from this is the fact that your past actions had direct effect on your present goals.

I am not trying to pry, but I don't want other candidates or future candidates to start freaking... a speeding ticket is not going to stop you, they expect candidates to be typical kids....5-6 tickets would be a different story...FYI I am being hypothetical since I DO NOT KNOW the infractions.
Good luck

I am. I'm a fighter and I'm not going down without a fight I've come way too far being disqualified for basically everything but fitness and this is the last hurdle I have to jump over for admission I'll be damned if this holds me back. I called the admissions guy for my region and am waiting for his call back. I am that kind of person to do something exactly likethis. I can do it I've proven too many people wrong thus far for them to be right after all. Thank you to everyone

My son was just as qualified and had received his LOA from the USNA, found out Friday that his vision (20/25) in one eye will keep him from going! He also had 2 nominations!

What does everyone think about this proposal. It's wild. It's far fetched but so was my chances of making it this far in the process.

WHOA

Wait a minute...your first posts state citations and/or infractions. Now you are saying fitness is your DQ.

I hate to say this, but your story is changing.

This is going to come off as brash or rude, but how did you get a principal if you had several citations/infractions or were not physically fit. Yrs of being on this board and through our DS's personal experience most MOC's are looking for some athletic ability when giving a nom, let alone a PRINCIPAL. Typically, principals only account for 30% of all noms. They are not the avg., and now you are saying you have infractions and FAILED the CFA, but got a Principal. 2 +2 is not equaling 4.

BTW the board meets on specific days, driving 10-12 hrs will not help you. Talk to your regional to see if you can explain youthful indiscretion.

Whatever you do, do not go in with the attitude that you are far more deserving of this than most others. That's a very poor attitude and one that won't be handled well by anyone.

I think he said..DQ'd for everything BUT fitness.. an athlete who passed the CFA but had to work on medical and academic.
Given the current publicity about a Navy football player, the admissions and athletic departments may be being particularly scrupulous about athletes with possible character issues.

Suggestion: go, but don't go with the "They owe it to me!" attitude. Think about working on the character piece. Convince them you learned from your mistakes, have character references. Show them you won't embarrass them in a couple of years with a repeat.

All of this discussion really upsets me...my son has awsome character, is the salutatorian, plays multiple sports, great scores on ACT/SAT, 2 nominations, passed the physical w/flying colors....and you would think that a waiver for his vision would not be a big deal! We would rather have a bunch of kids with attitudes as our leaders than ones who need glasses!

agree.
Think: CONTRITION and HUMILITY.

One more thing, you wrote a couple of months ago:
Passed the CFA with flying colors and am academically qualified, at least enough for a recruited athlete and the Political offices in this state.
Not sure what you mean here. Your academic qualification is determined by the admissions board and only the admissions board.

Y'all need to go back and read his first post in this thread: He said he was physically qualified and medically qualified.

That means he has passsed the CFA and he has passed DODMERB.

No need to speculate if those issues are keeping him out, they are not. (according to his first post).

He has a principal nomination. The Congressman can give a principal nomination to whomever they wish. Period. There are no laws governing who they can give one to. Big donor, family friend, poll worker's niece, etc.

If he is qualified (scholastically, medically, and physically) the law says he WILL be appointed.

Not "may be" appointed, but WILL BE appointed.

Scholastic qualification includes grades/transcript, class rank, SAT/ACT scores, team leadership/captain, Eagle scout, work experience, volunteer experience, demonstrated or evidence of character, BGO interview, etc.

He has not stated that he is scholastically qualified, so it is obvious to me that the scholastic qualification has not been met, hence no appointment.

Principal nomination + 3Q = Appointment, guaranteed.

Principal nomination + 2Q = sorry.

EDIT - I just read in his other post that he says he is "triple qualified" - if true, he will be appointed. But then I see he is referencing two "citations" which would indicate that his scholastic qualification has not been accepted.

Vision is a big deal in the Navy. He must be able to perform the duties of a Naval officer. I suggest he contact admissions for an explanation.
Candidates who receive an LOA must become medically qualified.

I have and they cannot provide one. He received a medical waiver from the medical department and then when it went to the person making then final decisions office it was denied....once again, it is a shame that this country would rather have kids with attitudes than glasses. We are not talking legally blind, we are talking 20/25 in one eye.

JAM is correct, even vision is a huge deal. The vision means that they are immediately DQ for certain positions...i.e. rated fliers, in essence it ties their hands when it comes to positions.
He received a medical waiver from the medical department and then when it went to the person making then final decisions office it was denied.
He was approved by DODMERB board, but not rubber stamped based on the DODMERB rec?

Next, the Navy is notorious for their vision tests. They are the hardest branch by far. What the Navy deemed as DQ may have passed in the Air Force or Army.

I think we do not know what these citations/infractions were for, and nobody can make a logical assessment without knowing that info. Were they for speeding 45 in a 25? Were they for DUI? Were they for being caught cheating on a test?

I misread the fitness comment, but the fact still remains that the OP has stated that they had a couple of citations/infractions. I am betting they were denied because the SA has already realized they would not pass the security clearance barrier for I Day.

I would say to the OP contact the MOC because they are the one that gave a principal and would bear the most productive pressure. However, if the citations were not revealed to the MOC for the nom process, I am not sure they will get strong support if the SA has already gone against him.

2 yrs on this board and I have never heard of a principal losing their appt. I truly believe there is more to this story than the OP wants to release...sorry OP, but it just doesn't make sense. I am still wondering if this was a personal connection, i.e. academically qualified for at least a recruited athlete.
