Does anyone know how hard it is to get into USCG OCS? I'm applying to the Academy, but am also considering civilian colleges and OCS as a back up. Thanks!

Very Respectfully,

Samaca,

I very much encourage you to check out/apply to the state maritime academies in the US. The Coast Guard offers our graduates the option of being a Coast Guard Officer.

In my own opinion - the priority for your options should be;

USCGA Appointment

if not selected - Acceptance to a state maritime academy

finally,

Coast Guard OCS - which would not occur until after you have completed an undergraduate program.

I wish you well,

Alternatives...

Son is looking at alternatives...but the majority of the cadets at SUNY Maritime say OCS is even more selective than going through admissions process...pre-commissioning initiative is only available in limited colleges...was informed by someone that he must contact a recruiter and find out if student body has at least 25% minority rate from his advisor...is this true?:confused:Changing colleges seems to be a nightmare for this:eek:....Please advise....

No they are talking about a different program ("The College Student Precommissioning Intitiative(CSPI) " is aimed at historically minority college recruitment). The Maritime Colleges are commissioned as direct commissions in the Coast Guard under the following program:"The Direct Commission Maritime Academy Program" . In that program you are commissioned right away and go thru a short orientation course- not OCS. Unlike ROTC in the DoD services- the USCG will not pay you anything prior to commissioning thru this program- while they do pay a stipend and scholarship thru the CSPI http://www.gocoastguard.com/find-yo...ortunities/programs/maritime-academy-graduate

recommend you look into The Citadel, they have a new direct commission program and have many grads who have commissioned through OCS, every little bit helps when trying to boost the resume and going to a prestigious military college would certainly be a plus
