Steve is so correct. You're asking for numbers that NO ONE can give. If they try and say they know; even your ALO or Congressman; they are mistaken and misleading.
However, there are some basic math that will tell you that there are MORE people on the wait list than those who get an Appointment. Huh? How is that possible. Again, simple math. (For illustration and ball park figures only)
1. Initial amount of people showing interest in the academy: 10,000+/-
2. Amount who actually go online and start the application process: 8,000+/-
3. Amount who meet the minimum requirements: 6,000+/-
4. Amount who receive a nomination: 5,000+/-
5. Amount of appointments offered: 1,600-1,700
6. Amount expected to accept appointment: 1,300-1,400
7. Amount on the wait list: 3,700+/-
This means that until at least 300-400 appointees TURN DOWN their appointments, they won't get into the wait list. HOWEVER: This too is misleading because it depends WHO turns down the appointment that determines WHO will be offered the replacement slot; and WHEN. I.e. Approximately 1/2 of the appointments are from slotted nominations and not the general pool. e.g. 453 representative; 100 senators; 100 presidential; ROTC; Prior Enlisted; etc... So, if Representative Whatshisnuts from the 3rd district in Whateverthehellstate has a primary nominee and they turn it down, the academy will go to that rep's #2 person if they qualify.
So basically, you can be the #1 highest scored, NON-selectee on the wait-list, and lots of others on the wait list can be offered an appointment before you are because their district/state/nominator is the one that had the person turn down the appointment. But there are so many variables on how the nominators have their nominees ranked, the type of nomination, etc...
So, while no one can give you solid numbers, basic math says that there are MORE people on the wait list than there are with appointment and going to the academy. Hang in there and best of luck. Mike....
