Hello. I was creating my packet for senator/ congressional nominations and i wanted to know if these packets should be mailed in or should i turn them in personaly ?

Your help is much appreciated

juniorj, I don't think it matters too much. My DS mailed in the ones that where too far to drop off by hand. One MOC's local office was around the corner so we dropped it off in person. Didn't much matter, didn't meet anyone besides the receptionist. Nice enough person, but not influential.

I say it may be more important to follow up with phone calls. You may be more likely to speak with someone that is closer to the process. You can also begin to establish some contact with the office to make sure things are getting received, anything else that's needed, etc.

What's interesting is that our MOC representative told us a few things about the process that you may not find out otherwise, nothing critical, but things like "don't pay money for the SAT test score, just send in a print out from your computer". Call and let them know you are interested in making sure the process goes smoothly for everyone.

I'd say what's important is to send things USPS Return Receipt so that you get a return card to assure the package got to it's intended recipient. Keep copies and records, of EVERYTHING, no matter how unimportant you may think it is. Everything you send will be important.

Good luck and don't forget to breath on occasion through this process, it can feel like a long haul.

juniorj,
"don't pay money for the SAT test score, just send in a print out from your computer".

this may be true for your MOC but it is NOT TRUE for all MOCs. Many MOCs require the official score from the testing center - and won't even accept it from your school transcript. Everyone should be sure to submit test results in the format that their MOC accepts.

Son also got a warning from senators' offices to allow at least two weeks' mailing time because of security issues/anthrax screening. This was not an issue for hand-carried packets.

For my Congressman I handed it in personally. It was a 90 min drive but I was willing to take it to make sure it got there. I did this because I had mine ready about only 3 weeks before the deadline and didn't want to chance a mishap in the mail. I'm sure if you mail it in well before the deadline then mail is fine. I just slept better knowing it was definitely in the hands of my MOC.

If you are worried about mail not getting there, there also may be the option to fax it over. I did that with some of mine. Just call beforehand to ask and notify when you are faxing it over and you should be good to go (my congressman had a fax number posted on his page for service academy applicants and it said it was ok to fax the packet),

2011 Mom, agreed, not all and maybe none, but you won't know if you don't call. In fact two of the three insisted on scores sent officially only, but there was one that didn't and we wouldn't have known if we didn't call. The representative volunteered the information. Point is that it is worth calling if only to make contact. Like mmb5 stated, there may be circumstances that warrant a modified approach. The people at the other end of the phone generally do want to help.

I think we will all agree, those that have been through the process, that a phone call now and again can make the process a little smoother, help gain some assurance that packages are complete, etc. and provide straightforward answers.
