Do ROTC cadets/midshipman receive active duty benefits like students at service academies do?
 
For Army, I do not believe so. The only benefit you get other than possibly getting the scholarship is a monthly stipend once your an MS3. (scholarship cadets get the stipend MS1+MS2 also)
 
Once contracted youll get a military ID. With that, you can fly space A on military transports and buy cheap stuff on base. Thats really the only "benefits" other than scholarship money.
 
NROTC daughter got her ID in the first couple months of her freshman year. Card also gets you free baggae on several airlines. (US Airways for one).
 
For navy - my son went and got the green ID card at thanksgiving - from paperwork done in august then processed at unit and he was instructed to get it during thanksgiving.
At least at VMI, the person in charge of this relayed to me that it was important that my son NOT surrender his dependent ID - that the green one issued would be reserve and only activitated while on active duty - therefore the rest of the year and certainly during the school year my son would continue to be covered (medical) by his dependent ID.
At least in the old days, those reserve ID cards need to be accompanied by orders - instructions to and fore active duty timeframe. Thus they would only be valid - useable at PX, commissary, etc during those periods. Interesting tidbit - VMI does a spring field training exercise for a few days- the NROTC (both navy and marine) midn went to norfolk and while there they were taken to PX - and my son did buy something - he only had his reserve ID with him - so maybe during the FTX days they were treated as tho they were on active duty.
Therefore I dont think one could rely on this reservist ID for hops - esp to and from school - just my opinion - todays military may certainly have different rules

For Space A hops contracted ROTC Cadets with ID cards are technically authorized- but they are the lowest priority and they also have to have a form from their unit in addition to their ID card which authorizes their eligibility for military travel (DD1853). As far as I know- although he is an Army ROTC contracted scholarship cadet at VMI - my son hasn't been issued a CAC card and is still using his Dependants ID card -which has gotten him free baggage checkin and has allowed him to stay in the Army Lodge at Ft Belvoir and Ft Hamilton- but other than that- the ID card is not exactly a treasure trove of benefits whether it is a Reserve or Dependant card (well actually the dependant card is because it entitles him to Tricare coverage!) I assume since he is going to Abn School this summer that they will issue him his CAC card prior to that but I don't think that will change much for him.
 
Contracted ROTC cadets are intitled to book a room and stay at Shades of Green at WDW.
I *think* they are also allowed to book Army Lodging/Navy Lodging rooms - maybe it depends on the specific lodging and how busy they get.


About medical care - when on training - i.e. FTX or even PT - any injuries are considered LOD and cadets are entitled to proper medical care and treatment resulting from those injuries. Otherwise - they should be kept on parent's insurance, including tricare if military.
 
Thanks for current clarification - its good to know that there are some benefits - the lodges could come in handy from time to time.
Shades of Green - brings back memories - its a nice option for military members! I immediately thought their price scale - wonder how they put the cadet for pricing?
 
Ahh, Shades of Green. :smile::smile: Great place.

Even if the cadets can't book there, they'll be able to after graduation/commissioning.:thumb:
