My first question is if I am actually being recruited for track and field. I am a high school Junior and started recieving letters from each Service Academy in the summer of my Sophomore to Junior year. I filled out the recruiting qeustionaire that they asked me too for USMA and USAFA. Then a few months later the USMA assistant track coach began to call me. I have gotten a total of three calls.
Second if I am being recruited how does this play into admission? I am not souly relying on this to get me in, I do have other aspects that should help as well. Also I really would like to attend USMA or even USAFA but not simply for the reason of sports. I want to be in the military.
Sorry for the long post.

Coach Penn? You're probably being recruited if shes called you three times. What do you run?

yes coach Penn is the one! I run the 3200m and 1600m and also cross-country? You?

Receiving information and questionaires is information gathering to see if they have an interest. Being called by a coach is the start of being recruited. The next part is them seeing you in competition which I assume they have done and the last part of being a recruited athlete is bringing you in for an official visit. I am curious if you are only a junior, how is the coach able to call you as coachs are not allowed to make phone contact until July 1st of your junior year.

And yes being a recruited athlete does have a bering on your status for acceptance and appointment. It is an advantage. Good luck.

Different sports have different rules. The academies also have some contact periods that are early for some sports because of the nature of their admissions process.

globalview2 - good luck to you!

I think this is the NCAA rule for non-military schools. However, I was told that military schools may begin talking to athletes in their junior year.

Hey I'm going to usma and running track and xc as part of the class of 2014. Coach Penn started getting in contact with me after my sls session, and called me pretty regularly (following the NCAA rules). Because the academies are merit based admission institutions, sports won't necessarily get you in. It's more of a once you get in, your on the team. However, it may help out if you and another application are very close. It just depends. I mean, being recruited can somewhat help ur chances. If you are serious about it, they will start talking about wanting to bring u up on a trip to see west point. Really, this is how I decided I wanted to go. I was also talking to navy--visited both, and loved west point. So I suggest going on trips to both academies before u make ur decision.

Hope this helps!

Just an FYI for those who are being recruited for a Div. 1 sport at USMA. Because of NCAA regulations regarding contact your local liaison officer/MALO is specifically instructed to be careful on how they interact with you. We don't want to receive a violation from the NCAA which would potentially jeopardize your eligibility to compete at the collegiate level. You're more than welcome to reach out to your MALO with your questions about the academy and the admissions process but please don't discuss the recruiting aspect as that's off limits to us. Good luck!

what are the chances, if any, of getting onto the xc/track team without being recruited? i have heard of a period of time during beast where that kind of thing happens like tryouts or whatnot, but it is a bit unclear to me as to what exactly is the procedure

any help?

do you know if the go scout for soccer? i was wondering because I play Division A/1 soccer and was wondering...

They definitely go scout for soccer. I went to a soccer tournament last summer and the WP coach was there.
