My son just accepted his USCGA Appointment to the Class of 2014!!! We are interested in joining the local chapter of the USCGA Parents Association. We live in Dover, DE and it looks like we could pick from either the Delaware Valley or the Chesapeake & Potomic Chapters. Does anyone have any idea which one is for Delaware parents? Needless to say we are more than thrilled for our son, as well as excited about becomming part of the Coast Guard Family!

Congratulations to your son and your whole family. Welcome! I'm not familiar with that area so I won't comment on the chapter but I wanted to encourage you to go onto the parent's association website in June and sign up for the listserve for your son's class. It is a true blessing for all the new CGA parents, especially through swab summer and that first year. You will have to sign up for it as it is available only to CGA parents. You and other parents can ask questions and it is also a great source of support. Again, welcome to the CG family.:thumb:

Congratulations. Our Coastie is graduating in May. Do visit http://www.uscgaparents.org/. The previous poster is correct. The listserve is truly indispensible.

There are some changes afoot for the USCGA parents association. One registration will enroll a family in both the national association and their local chapter. Both the Delaware Valley and C&P groups are very active. It looks like the Delaware Valley group covers Delaware--but check to see where each group usually meets. If the other is closer, check into it. By the way, do look for info on swab picnic. Great info for new cadet and family--great chance to meet some classmates, too.

Each local PA will have a table set up at R-Day. Each will be taking membership applications and selling CGA merchandise. Bring CASH, most do not accept credit cards.

You may also be invited to a "pre R-Day" picnic sponsored by your local PA.

The "Appointees Picnic" sponsored by the USCGA Parent's Association, Chesapeake & Potomac Chapter is on May 22nd at the Curtis Bay USCG shipyard in Baltimore.

Here are the details: Class of 2014 Appointee Picnic

Congrats LAXMOM4BOYS :jump1:

Wishing you and your family all the very best! Take lots of pictures!

Parent Association for Alabama ?

Is there a PA for those of us in Alabama, or do we mosey on over to Georgia? Believe it or not there are actually two of us from the great state of Alabama who received appointments to the Class of 2014. Maybe we should start our own PA :shake:. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

There is currently no USCGA local Parent's Association in Alabama.

Actually, there are a lot more than 2 from Alabama this year.

Maybe we should start our own PA :shake:. Any input would be appreciated.

You are encouraged to do so. Please read Chapter VII of the USCGA Constitution and By-Laws.

Thanks Luigi

Its great to hear we will be well represented! We only knew of one other appointment that has been accepted, but it does not surprise me there are more. If there is a good number of us, perhaps we should look into setting something up.

Thanks again,
Argos

Yes, but you also have to remember that the Parent's Association is also made up of cadet parents from the 3/c, 2/c, 1/c and Grad parents.
There are more from the surrounding area than you might think (also the panhandle of FL). :thumb:

Argos- My DH and I were discussing that very same topic of whether it would be best to join the Georgia PA or the online. If you decide to start a Bama one, we are there!!!

Luigi- Will admissions compile a list of the number of appointments per state as R-day approaches? It would be interesting to see how many different states are represented in the 2014 class.

As of mid-March, and those who accepted appointments, it looks to be 26 states, plus the VI and Micronesia. :thumb:

Yes, they usually list that information in the class profile, but it usually is not released publicly until well after R-Day.

to PA or not to PA...

Thanks for the support Hopeful1!
Thanks for the tip USNA1982BGO!

I will take a look at the material and we can go from there. I am sure there are plenty of people willing to help with information (as this forum clearly demonstrates). I will post when I have questions.

Thanks again,

Argos

Nice job island kids! Say goodbye to your clear and warm tropical waters for the next few years and pack your thermal undies. :shake:

It's not THAT cold here :thumb:
But they will miss the tropical waters.
