Hi all.

As the title implies, is it possible (or acceptable) to transfer to another university (with a NROTC unit) with your NROTC scholarship intact?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, it is possible. When I received my nomination for the scholarship there was a section that explained how to request a change of assignment. I followed the instructions and emailed a Placement Division Officer, who then replied back pretty quickly. Unfortunately the unit I wanted to go to was full, and so then they put me on a waiting list.

On a similar subject, (sorry FR4Y, I don't mean to detract from your question) if your request for a transfer is denied, and your assignment is to a school you never applied to, and the deadline for the application has passed, what do you do?

I apologize, but let me clarify. Suppose I am a midshipman at university A. However, I wish to transfer to university B during my sophomore year (and attend university B for my junior and senior years). Can I do this? My NROTC packet has the same transfer of university paperwork, but can you only do this before you become involved in an unit?

XCRocks, if you haven't already, I would email PNSC_NROTC.scholarship@navy.mil and see if they could help you.

I don't know for sure, but if the NROTC scholarship works like the AFROTC scholarship, you can not switch colleges after picking one and starting there. My son received an AFROTC scholarship and was told to pick his college carefully, because he could not decide to transfer to another college after starting at his first choice - the scholarship was only for one college. I hope this helps.

I think this is possible...why not ask your NROTC advisor? In my son's unit, they have a sophomore who transferred from another school, in the middle of his sophomore year.

It is certainly possible if you are requesting the transfer for the beginning of the next school year - my son's request for transfer was just approved, and he will begin sophomore year at the school he tried to get into last year (but was waitlisted at) with his scholarship intact. However, your question seems to be whether or not a request can be made mid year. Is that correct? If so, you should check with Pensacola.

One data point that will be a determining factor in whether or not your request is approved is the tuition at each school. If the tuition at the school you are trying to transfer to is the same or less than your current school, that will weigh in your favor. If it is significantly more, it's unlikely that your request will be approved for budgetary reasons. That information came directly from Pensacola.

Not necessarily in the middle of my sophomore year, just transfer and attend another university for my junior and senior year (so apply during my sophomore year). However, I'm in a precarious situation; it will be my first year of NROTC and I don't want to go in (or be seen) as the guy who joins and bails.

semperfi, can you give me some insight into your son's transfer timeline? When did he put in a request to transfer? Did he begin at the beginning of the school year? My concern is joining the battalion and immediately saying "I'll be transferring" would not be the best way to approach the situation. I certainly will let them know what I'm doing and what I'm planning, but I don't want to immediately tell them I intend on transferring next year.

I'm not too worried about my scholarship transferring (I'm at a private institution, so there shouldn't be too much trouble transferring).

Thanks to all for the help thus far! :thumb:
