Hey all.

As I'm planning ahead, I'm wondering if anyone could give me an informal list of items that you are allowed to have in your room after BCT and restrictions on amounts.

Thanks!!

Phone after Prog (middle of october)
Printer/Scanner/Copier is fine
Computer monitor, up to 24" (Squad discretionary, usually after prog)
Snowboard/Ski gear
Alarm clock w/o radio

That's about it. 2 personal memorabilia can be on your desk, the rest is pretty much issued to you. you get privileges like media back after Recognition.

2 personal items

is it true that if you hang pictures etc on the cork board (or whatever its called), it doesnt count as a personal item? So for example i could have 3 pictures, but as long as one is on the board, it doesnt count towards the 2 allowable personal items.

Some squadrons allow phones right after parent's weekend. And some allow large monitors right after Acceptance (our son's squadron allowed both at the forementioned times).

Other items our cadet was allowed:

Camera
snack box
sleeping bag - get a really good one
ceramic space heater
better pillow
ski clothes

When our cold-natured son came home for Thanksgiving, he said his really good sleeping bag and space heater were his 2 favorite things!

Our C4C LOVES his 24" HD flat screen monitor!

Yes - you can rent skis and snowboard equipment from the Cadet Rec Center in Vandy Hall. Cost for ski rental, boots, and poles for this past season for our son was around $125 for basic and $150 for performance ski package. A season ski pass to Keystone and Arapahoe Basin was $189.

All the forementioned items make great high school graduation gifts!

be careful with space heaters- they have to be a specific type with an automatic shut off and can get you in trouble in safety inspections.

Are you allowed to bring your own class utensils (binders, pens, pencils, notebooks, etc)?

Those are strictly forbidden.

Nope, those are perfectly allowed!

Packermatt7 - what is "prog?"

Aggie83 - Your son uses his sleeping bag in his room? Is it that cold and/or is he that cold blooded?!

Prog is midterm, lesson 20, when the first academic progress report comes out.

Aggie83, I used (and still use) a sleeping bag all year. Since a 4* bed has to be in SAMI all the time it is easier to place a sheet on top of the bed then use the sleeping bag. In the morning all you have to do is put the bag away and tighten the bed sheets. Some freshman just buy extra blankets as an alternative to a sleeping bag.

Sleeping bag - two-fold benefit:

1. As stated above, you put it on top of your inspection ready bed.

2. You zip yourself up in it when there is ice on the INSIDE of your dorm room windows!

When are we allowed to bring our own desktop?
I would definitely hold off on the desktop until at least Parent's Weekend. You won't be able to access the internet (or other USAFAnet resources) and you won't have any of the USAFA software that's preloaded onto your computer. I recommend waiting until you are well settled into the academic/training lifestyle and then make your decision.

I heard that you will be issued a laptop, but you can have your own desktop as well? Is this true? I heard it from a former cadet but maybe the rules have changed. Plus you must do a clean wipe of your computer before you leave the Academy if you decide to connect your personal computer to the Internet provided by the Academy?

Yes, a laptop will be issued. It'll be the same as the 2013 laptop, which is a Fujitsu Lifebook tablet. You can bring your own computer, but it won't be connected to the network, and again, nor will it have any USAFA software. It might be possible to connect to the network, but you'll have to talk to the 10th CS Helpdesk for the details.

some squads let you have phone right after A-day...all depends....

For the desktop, I wouldn't think of having one before recognition. Some of the upperclassmen in my squad have desktops, but there really is no point for desktops except for gaming (which you won't be allowed to do). It's damn near impossible to run modern games on a laptop so that's why people get desktops. I couldn't even start Medal of Honor: Airborne because the tablets can't handle the graphics.

any regulations on what type of blanket /sleeping bag are allowed or suggested

We bought our son a nice electric blanket from either Lands End or LL Bean and he loves it.
