Does anyone know if the mile run in on a quarter mile track or otherwise?

thanks.

it's not a quarter mile track. It's a straight half mile track so you will run half a mile in a straight line then turn around and run the other half.

It is flat though and pretty straight. I ran 5:20~ without a watch so it wasn't bad.

Thats really good to hear, theres something about regular tracks that I hate. I like to have a sense that I'm actually advancing I guess.

I don't wear one unless my coach is in one of his moods so it was my choice.

You'll have the pleasure of completing your mile run on the road right next to the Hudson. You run a half mile down to the wastewater treatment plant and return. This is the same location the cadets complete their 2 mile run for the APFT. If you're really lucky they'll have the wastewater treatment plant up and running full blast to give you the true cadet experience!

cfa results....

Do your request your cfa results to be sent to the other academies if you are applying at others, or are the results posted somewhere automatically to be viewed by other academies? And, any additional info and advice we need to know helpful to our SLS weekend, greatly appreciated.

Maui - about sharing the CFA results. Last year, I did my CFA at the USNA Summer Seminar but applied to USAFA ans USMA as well. I had to call USNA to get them to share the results and it took 1-2 weeks for it to be received by the other academies.

Agree on the process stated above for sending CFA scores to other academies. As for SLS be motivated, make a good first impression and use the time at USMA to learn about the academy experience as it will help you make the decision whether to proceed with the application process. Good luck!

Regarding that half-mile track.. by chance, is it notorious for having the wind blow into the runners? Or does the effects of wind just vary day by day?

Because at my school's track (a quarter mile track) once you hit about 150-200m, the wind becomes a wall and hits you head-on, for the rest of the lap, and can really slow a runner down. (And this is for every lap, just based on how the track is built, and it's location)

I was wondering if anybody had any insight if there is any major effect of the wind, on runners at the SLS CFA?

yeah true that, if it is by the water then there will most likely be wind....when I was there for a tour walking to the parking lot, it was crazy windy

nice...will probably decrease my mile time by a good bit...hate regular tracks too

If it is windy one way it will be helping you on the way back... Either way wind isn't going to make or break your mile unless you are already in danger in which case you shouldn't be hoping for good weather but training...

And it won't decrease your mile time at all either >.< You are going to be making a u-turn at the half mile marker and are going to lose all your momentum.

yeah, but the track is fairly level right, and besides...you lose a lot of momentum on track curves too

You lean into curves and don't lose any momentum unless you are running at sub 4:00 pace. Tracks are the ideal place to run anything for time. I'm just saying that it is in your head. If you think that because it is windy you are going to run poorly than you probably are. If you ignore the wind and run like you usually do you may run 5-15 seconds slower but that shouldn't matter unless you are right on the cut off in which case you should train more anyway.

Everyone will likely do a little worse than their usual time because you lose some energy from the events previously.

Hmm, that's true, good point. 15 seconds really isn't going to make or break the mile time, and the wind shouldn't affect it that much.

(I just asked since we only run into the wind on that one section of track. The other section has little to no wind going with you, so it doesn't fully balance out. Hence the slightly lower times than we normally can run, on my school track)

Sort of off topic, but my friend told me he ran on a D shaped track (Around a baseball diamond) last year. That probably wasn't very fun for him.

For the regular shaped tracks you could run on the outer lanes and lean inward a little. That helps me at least.
