We currently have T-mobile but son says he wants Verizon or ATT...I just want to be sure he has what will be most effective at USAFA. Can anyone provide feedback on that? Thank you!

Also, I guess I should ask this - when can the doolies actually have their cell phones and when are they not authorized?

I have At&t and it works almost everywhere. I have heard verizon is very spotty in some places and great in others. As far as when cell phones are allowed, it really depends on the squad, but at the latest, 4 digs get their phones on weekends after PW and usually no later than thanksgiving, they have them full time (although it is usually is much earlier than that)

AT&T seems to work best in my opinion. I have Verizon and I usually have 0-1 bars in my room (in Sijan), no 3G, and calls like to drop. Reception and data is great everywhere outside of the dorms. All my buddies with iPhones don't seem to have any issues.

My son is in Sijan and he has no problems. Calls fine; 3g internet/data fine. One thing is for sure, any place that verizon has coverage, they have full coverage. AT&T has many places where they don't have 3g coverage. The advertisements are correct. AT&T may have faster, but verizon has better coverage. But verizon doesn't have the iphone. They do have the android. My son seems to like it.

I did get decent reception in my room last semester, but my room this semester in a different hallway is a no go and seems to be the case for many people on my side of the hall. Go figure though, that across the hall and a couple alcoves down, my phone picks up bars plus 3G. But for me, it's to the stairwell to make a reliable call. Verizon will do since I'm on my family plan but if all things were equal I'd go iPhone and AT&T.
