Is it true that quite a few cadets sometimes go to Penn State to party?

You will have plenty on your plate before you ever think about going away to party anywhere.

However, that being said, I do recognize that as a positive thinker you expect to survive Beast and become a member of the Corps, and that you are wondering what your life may be like thereafter on the social front.

I never went to Penn State to party, and I don't know of anyone who did. That doesn't mean it didn't happen. But it's a long way from West Point. You're looking at a good 4.5 to 5 hours, longer on a Friday with traffic.

You will likely find, as I did, that you will go where your friends have connections or where you yourself have connections. I was fortunate to have a roommate from Connecticut, and he often had us over for weekends when we were able to get pass (as a plebe, that amounted to twice, as we both got a tongue-in-cheek performance pass for an event that shall go unnamed). When I was a cow, my sister was an undergrad at Yale, so we went there fairly often. As a firstie, I went to Albany and Philadelphia with friends as well.

But, for the most part, I became quite the denizen of NYC and to this day count it as my second city home. It's very accessible and, with the right friends who are willing to combine financial forces, very affordable as well. Plus, if you're a young man or gal of considerable charm you may just find a friend of the opposite sex with whom you might start a relationship, which will lead to both easy accomadations and a reason to visit. Several of my friends married lovely gals from NYU and Columbia.

Cadets were also known to frequent various SUNYs, Marist College, and for the politically daring, Vassar College.

Of course, that was back in the dark ages :wink:. Your mileage may vary.

If memory serves, as Plebes, we were eligible (if in good standing) for two weekend passes all year. One of your passes should be saved for the Navy game (or you will just be bussed back and forth immediately before and after the game, which is generally only done by those who have no choice in the matter, because they are in some sort of trouble). So, with only 48 discretionary hours to "party," you would be wise to spend as little of it as possible just traveling to your destination. Even NYC will feel very far away when you are watching the precious minutes of your pass tick away on a bus or train trying to get there.

They may allow more passes for Plebes now, but, if so, probably not many. In any case, let me offer you this: those in my Beast platoon who came to West Point with delusions of "partying" were not there at recognition, let alone graduation.

BEAT NAVY!

my son's favorite place to go on pass in NYC, he does not have to spend the night and if he wants there is always the service motel. He and his buds often go into the city to see movies (and I am sure things that he does not want dear ole mom to know about)

You can always join a team that competes or a club that competes/performs out of town. You may get several weekends away. They may not be what your friends think of as a college party, but it will feel great if you're a plebe.

I knew a guy who joined the Jewish Chapel Choir as a Plebe, because they had good trips. He wasn't Jewish.

The Jewish Chapel Choir is very diverse, including cadets of different ethnic backgrounds and religions. As a matter of fact a few years ago the conductor was a Moslem cadet. In December, 2005 they sang at the White House Hanukkah party.

This happens to be a good example of a club that allows for multiple trips - and good food.

Service motel?

I haven't heard about the service motel -- there's somewhere in New York City that cadets can stay over? Any details on location/rates/general availability?

Party?????

For any prospective who has a concern about 'where' they will able to party ................... you might want to do more in depth thinking regarding the decision to attend a military academy.

Partying happens, of course, but it very secondary to all of the myriad other duties and responsibilities that every cadet carries. If a cadet has high school friends attending a civilian college nearby they 'may' see them occasionally. But please know that these friends will likely NEVER understand the time constraints and regulations that cadets operate under.

Best of Luck!

Usually it's only USNA MIDNs who come to PSU and then it is only for a club sport. Very rarely do groups from other service academies come to simply "party."

Though I do know of a few groups of people who have come up on their own time, they only had a limited amount of time to "party" and even then you would have to know people or where you wanted to go.
