In case of any delays, what are other ways of getting to Highland Falls from NYC?

Are there cabs that will go that far, are there other bus companies, etc?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thought you were flying into Stewart?

I have rented a car both times I have flown into Newark. Booked online and had pretty good deals.

Have you considered taking the government-paid plane ticket to R-Day and having your mother come up on A-Day instead? As a new cadet you are provided overnight accomodations in Newark and then transportation to West Point. It is expensive to travel to New York and she could enjoy spending time with you in August. However, you might have to pay for the ticket up front and be reimbursed later so others with more information might need to weigh in here and give more details.

That was a mistake on my part. I AM flying into Newark International, but I'm catching the shuttle to try and reach the bus station in NYC (Port Authority Bus Terminal) before the final bus leaves. :shake:

The times are very close, so there a medium chance that I'll miss the bus to Highland Falls. My mother has already purchased her plane ticket, so we are already stuck down that route.

That's why I'm asking from NYC. Just to be safe.:thumb:

bakermiddle - if you booked your flight through the Academy and have the government paid plane ticket and you experience any travel delays they will give you a phone number to call. Call that number and they will help you out.
They will not leave you stranded in NYC.

The last train leaves at 7:52 from GCS. What time is your flight expected to land?

Peekskill is about 10 miles south of USMA and about 40 miles north of Grand Central

Peekskill is on the East Side of the Hudson. You will need to get a taxi from there.

You are flying in on Sunday night - correct?

You should be okay, barring any unforseen major delays. Like I said, take that emergency number with you and call them if you or anyone on the gov't paid flights get delayed. They will help you. They will come and get you.

A couple of years ago a bunch of incoming New Cadets were stuck at various airports in the Midwest because of serious t-storms. Some were late - very late on R-Day. They arrived in the afternoon. But they got there in time for the parade and Oath ceremony. They didn't have any repercussions because they were flying on the gov't's dime. Would be different if they went privately.
Just don't worry too much.

I can always drive into Newark on Sunday night and pick you up.

travel from Newark to Grand Central for Metro North

If you don't take JustAMom up on her very generous offer :), you can take public transit easily (my daughter does this often to get into NYC to get a train to her school) -- from Newark, take the AirTrain shuttle (terminal B) to the Newark Airport train station, then take the New Jersey Transit train to Penn Station in NYC (32nd & 8th), then grab a cab across town to Grand Central (42nd & Park) and grab a metro north train to Garrison -- prearrange a cab, and you're all set.

The trip from Newark to Grand Central is about an hour (depending on traffic across Manhattan). Good luck and Congrats!

From Newark Airport Rail Station, you can also take a train up the west side of the Hudson on the Port Jervis Line to the Salisbury Mills/Cornwall station (connecting to Metro North at Secaucus Junction). It's only about a 12-minute taxi (or willing forum driver ;) ride to WP from there, at a moderate pace.

The airport-leg train, 7852, headed toward NY-Penn Station, leaves the Newark Airport Railroad Station at 6:04 p.m
at Secaucus Junction, you get off and connect to the Metro-North train, 0079, headed toward Port Jervis -- it leaves Secaucus Junction at 6:25 p.m. -- and arrives at Salisbury Mills/Cornwall at 7:33 p.m.

As a plus, if you choose this route, you'd be riding over the Moodna Viaduct, the train trestle glimpsed in the George Clooney film _Michael Clayton_.

That sounds much easier and more reliable than trying to get a cab from Penn Station to Grand Central at rush hour.

Actually, getting from Penn Station to Grand Central on a Sunday afternoon is a walk in the park. It's the cabs on the arrival town-to-West Point end that you've got to have pre-arranged and certain!

Thank you so much for the information! I'm glad that it won't be held against me if some unforseen delay comes up.

I'll try my best to take all of you guy's advice! Thanks so much! :thumb:
