It's been mentioned in earlier threads that many Cadets buy used books for classes from upper class men/women or on-line to minimize use of "magic money" or payback. If no classes are audited, are the C4C schedule and books the same or at least partly the same for all first semester Cadets? If not what are the differences (other than foreign language), and are there any rising C3C's that are interested in selling for the Fall '10.
I guess I should ask how marked up these books get (highlighters, etc.)?
Has anyone looked into using one of the conversion programs out on the net to mount .pdf versions of books on Kindle's or (future) iPads?

I can't answer all your questions, but...

The cadets schedules really all vary quite a bit. So I don't think there are any books you can find ahead of time.

Frankly I will be interested to see too how cadets can get used books for their first semester. It seems like my son only recieved his schedule very shortly before classes started his first semester. Maybe that has changed now.

Hopefully they are not still making them buy mandatory books at the cadet store for classes they don't even have.

The problem with obtaining used books for the first semester for C4Cs is that they only get their schedule sometime in the small timeframe where BCT ends and Acceptance Day (which is less than a week). First they have to get their computers issued and get on the network to even search for any used books. Classes start the day after Acceptance Day. And they are pretty scared to talk to any upper classman for anything much less do you want to sell some books. After the first semester, they will have more time to gather up used books online or swap with other cadets. Even then, my cadet did not know his Scholars class book requirements until the first day of class which means you pay more for the books.

Not really true... by that time you know who you want to ask without being "scared". By that time the fear isn't really there anymore.

Our son was able to get a few used books thru amazon his first semester - got the ISBN from the course list and then went online. He didn't have the book for the first class but neither did a lot of his classmates, but had it for the 2nd class. A C3C in his squad went up and down the hall asking if any 4* wanted to buy his Chem book so that's how he got that one used. I know he plans to do the same thing that C3C did - go up and down the hall asking the new 4*s. He also bought some books new online - free shipping and with my B&N discount.
A lot will depend on when they get their schedule as to how much time they'll have to do what he did.
And as Bandit said, schedules will vary greatly as a bunch will place out of math or chem or at least into 2nd level, not to mention the different languages.

Are the used books usually pretty marked up? What about the thoughts on Kindle's or iPads?

Kindles and iPads won't be allowed until after recognition:frown:

Although it sure would be nice to have all the books on one SMALL electronic device...

bottom line, is I wouldn't depend on on upperclassmen selling books, or ordering them online.

It is the Dean's policy that everyone have ALL their books on lesson 1, and most teachers do check on lesson 1. You'll probably get your schedule 3 days before that. Plus, some books are custom books, which you MUST purchase in the C-Store (they'll automatically take it out of your pay if you don't)

I went ahead and bought the books I needed from the C Store so I would have them on lesson 1. I then found and ordered them online, because usually even new on Amazon is cheaper than the store. The C Store has a return period, so I simply returned the books I was able to find cheaper.

I would doubt a sudden switch from PC to Apple products.
Many classes use programs that might not be compatible...not to mention the chaos that would ensue in the Comm. squadron!

...then again, the PTB decided 2010 had to have those new-fangled tablets.:thumbdown:
