West Point Class of 2014 Parents Almanac is Available

Wow! That is so helpful! Can't wait to sit down tonight and really go through it. Everything I have wondered about is now in one place.

Do they mail those out or is it strictly on line. USMAPS had the same thing and it wasn't mailed out in hard copy form.

We received an email stating that a hard copy would come in the mail, in a few weeks, for class of 2014 parents.

Great post, I want my parents to go through that as a crash course on West Point. They need some help. My dad asked me if the Army/Navy game would be at West Point this year...

I really hate being THAT guy, but page 29 has the title "2009-2010 calendar" ... I hope someone can fix that before they, if they, send it via mail.

I think the best advice regarding both manuals is this, "DO NOT MAKE AIR LINE RESERVATIONS TILL YOU TALK TO YOUR CADET!"
Airlines today are crucifying people changing dates by as much as the whole cost of the original ticket! I know, we learned the hard way last year and even double checked things....

Cheers

Thanks for the heads up! I just found out this information is also included with the 3rd admissible so it should be available to all accepted appointees

"During Reorganization Week (August 9-14), all
new cadets will be issued telephones for their rooms,
and they will be allowed to have use of their personal
cell phones, if available."

Phones? ...for PLEBES?!

THE CORPS HAS...!!

I see you are a '91 grad...that isn't all that long ago...plebes didn't have phones back then? Did they have to use pay phones to call home?

Now all cadets have free* long distance on their room phones.
(*included in the fees automatically deducted from their cadet account.)

It may not seem that long ago to you, but it seems like a long time to me as I approach my 20-year reunion.

Back in the "Old Corps," there were banks of around a half-dozen pay phones in the basements of the barracks, which all four classes had to use. The only cadets with phones in their rooms were those who required them as part of their cadet duty positions (battalion commanders and above, if I recall correctly). The pay phones were first-come-first-served, regardless of class, but the Plebes were not allowed to use them after academic call-to-quarters. Plebes were permitted to bring reading material, but had to stand at either attention or parade rest the entire time they waited for their turn. They could switch between those positions at will to prevent excessive muscle fatigue, but, of course, had to come to attention every time an upperclassman passed and render the appropriate greeting. All cadets were expected to keep their calls under 10 minutes since there was almost always a line.

Keep in mind that call waiting was not everywhere back then either. There were few things that felt worse as a Plebe during the academic year than standing for an hour, sweating in a steamy basement, just to get to a phone and hear a busy signal at the other end! "Too bad, Smack. Now get outa my way; I'm next!"

I am approximately the same age as you (born in 1968) so I don't want to think of 1991 as a "long time ago."

Love the stories of what cadet life used to be like. My son is finishing his cow year and has already complained about some things the class of 2012 got to do vs. what he had to do.

Back on topic...typos are typical when they recycle the last years document. I am sure they will be fixed eventually.
