Alright, so my SAT scores were made available online today, and I'm not sure how good my scores are for USMA acceptance. I'm only a sophomore still so I have plenty of time to retake the SAT, but I would certainly be happy stopping now. So what are good subscores that I should strive for?

I believe the average is right around 600. I would say 650+ would make you competitive and 700+ would be very strong. I think that was for a couple years ago and most people will tell you it has gotten more competitive.

I would suggest retaking the SAT a few times anyway, if you can. You may get a better score.

What were your SAT scores if you don't mind posting them?

Honestly, I wouldn't stop now unless you truly feel you've done your best. You'll be more prepared for the SAT by the spring of your junior year and the tests and their curves will fluctuate, so you might do better. I improved each time I took the test with no studying at all.

Since I got into SLS with a PSAT, not SAT/ACT score, I would strive for 650+

Yea, I would think so too... and you're a sophomore as well? Amazing job, keep it up! You sure have potential!

My superscored SAT is a 630 reading, 630 math, and 600 reading. So I have an 1860 at best so far. (Although my ACT still surpasses above average, being 97th percentile, and higher than the average scores of the class of 2013)

Well my deal is that I'm really good at academics but I have a lot of weight on GPA and SAT scores because I'm really lacking in leadership and academics...

Ahh ok, I see. That's more understandable now. Well for your leadership area, have you tried joining clubs and possibly becoming an officer/rep for a club? Or maybe run for class office?

And for athletics, do you do anything outside of school such as martial arts? Maybe you could try out for a team such as Track or Tennis or anything that strikes you as fun? This spring season was my first season on a Varsity team, Track, at my school. I admit I wasn't the greatest when I started, but I still improved and had fun as part of the team.

track i would say is the most laid back team i think at many schools...my opinion, dont flame me for it, it is just what i have noticed

Do you guys think I should take the SAT again?

March SAT:
490 reading
580 math
590 writing

May SAT:
620 reading
580 math
770 writing

1970 superscore

I would try and improve your math score to get into the 600 range.

I think that honestly depends on the school. I know that the team at my school is super intense sometimes. But you'll see that in how the team is ranked. Little effort = little results.

Yeah, it really depends on what the person makes out of it themselves. I know some pretty amazing people who excel in track but I know some who honestly don't care and perform terribly.

I hear that the application process for USMA is like a weighted grade.

From what my Liaison officer and a family friend tell me, its 60% Academics (SAT, ACT, GPA), 30% leadership (asb, extracurriculars, team captain), and 10% physical (Fitness Assessment test). I may be wrong, but this is what I've been told.

But its on a point system as well. For being team captain one year, you would get "x" amount of points, but if you were ASB President as well as Team captain, you would get even more points. (The point system is used for the national wait list I believe, to determine your ranking).

So first, you need to be fully qualified and then if you're wait-listed, hope your profile is strong.

This is what I've learned throughout my application process and I was wait-listed "Fully qualified Non-Select". Then got picked off national wait list. (I even got a rejection letter too, got the appointment just last week)

Thanks for the great information, that makes me feel at least a little bit better. I did serve on conduct committee in 9th grade, so that's a start for leadership. Team captain for a sport would be pretty far fetched--I've gone to a different school for every year of high school so far. But I was going to try and potentially start a club halfway through next school year, even though I'll be new, and hopefully that will show some leadership, or at least as much as is feasible with my frequent moves.

Explain that your repeated change of schools has made it difficult to obtain leadership positions and they will be pretty understanding.
