Chances of getting in

I live in Minnesota and I was wondering what my chances would to be accepted into West Point. Thanks, also what else can/should i do to increase my chances? I am a Junior in High School, soon to be a senior

GPA: 3.67 (unweighted)
Class Rank: unsure but positive in top 25%
College type classes: German, next year- AP Economics, and AP computer programing.
Academic letter since freshmen year
ACT: 24. 26 in math. will be retaking in fall.
nominated to do NHS but was unable to do so because of ride issues. will be doing my senior year

Sports-

Hockey, varsity player since freshmen year, 3 letters, captain junior year, and will be senior year. All-conference honorable mention junior year

Lacrosse, only a club sport at my school, starter since freshmen year, captain since sophomore. All conference honorable mention sophomore year, probably all conf this year, season not over yet but in top 10 for points scored in state.

Volunteering-

several church hours helping with annual fall festival.

coached a t-ball and soccer at a local park

My Grandpa was a World War II vet (Air Force) if that helps at all

Good overall but you need to improve. You should work on improving SAT/ACT scores (my son took each 3 times) and continuing to improve grades and leadership roles. Are you going to Boy's State (a big +)? Look at this site for the scores and activities that earned admission for the class of 2013... http://www.usma.edu/Class/2013/profile.asp

To help improve your chances for admission you want your numbers to be towards the upper end of the numbers shown, not in the middle of the pack.:wink:
 
Based on what I'm seeing through the AFF site for the candidates in my district who have been accepted and rejected, you're somewhat toward the lower end in terms of standardized test scores. Be sure to try again on the ACT or SAT, and don't shy away from prep courses.

Remember, though, that the academy looks at your whole file, not just test scores. USMA uses the Whole Candidate Score for that reason. There are many ways to look good on paper and not look so good in person, and vice versa. Keep being the young student of character you know how to be, seek leadership roles, and push yourself academically. You will be evaluated as a whole candidate, not as a name with some ACT numbers attached.

Continue to pursue the goal and don't be crushed by setbacks. Ask any questions you have, and you can always PM if you have questions you don't want to ask publicly.

Thank you for the advice and link 2013dad, I've been looking for a site like that, thanks also to ScoutPilot. and croc, I am from West St. Paul, a souther suburb of St. Paul, how bout yourself?

also I would love to do boys state but it happens to fall on the week of playoffs for lacrosse so I am unable to do so. Are there any other things specific camps or some sort I could do to increase my chance? other than raise my scores up.

Class rank and standardized test scores both weigh heavily towards your competitiveness as a candidate. Take and retake the ACT and get those grades up to raise your class rank (I'd like to see top 10-15%). Good luck!
 
I think I may be close to top 15% our school stoped makeing this public, so I would have to go talk to councler for that info, which I will be doing soon. Thank you all for the advice it is greatly appreciated, I think I will also be applying for an ROTC scholarship. Or maybe USMMA, but I am not sure yet.

Are you being recruited by any of the sports? Are you contact with the hockey and lax coaches...do you plan on attending either sports camp? Having athletic dept pull goes a long way in todays "tough to get into USMA environment"

Look at the bright side: your chances are better today than they were 10 years ago, since they've slowly increased class size. Now they admit about 150 more per class than they did in the past. Be positive!
 
The number of appointments is 1300 by law. This number use to be lower a few years ago (was 1100 I think). That is positive. However, this year they over admitted class 2014 (>1400). Will they reduce the size of class 2015 or so, making it potentially more competitive ??

Per a local field force rep here in WA: 2015 will be smaller to offset the large size of 2014.

I'd be interested to know where he/she heard that. Nothing like that has come down the official pipe.
 
My MALO said that each class is still viewed accordingly on its own when I asked him about the situation.
 
How unlikely is it that the class of 2014 will be less than 1300 before the beginning of classes is 2015? I would think it is fairly common to lose 7 or 8% of the plebe class.

Yes, the current authorized strength of the Corps (since 2003-2004) is 4400. West Point has never been at 4400 though they have been trying to get there. This year they finally graduated >1000.
There is no maximum per class. The strength is determined by the size of the Corps. As attrition in the upper classes decrease look for smaller incoming classes.
Another things that has held them back is the size is related to the number of cadets in ROTC (it's complicated). Now that ROTC is popular again, and West Point is increasingly popular, I would think they would be at or near full strength soon.

Speculating here but based on a post made by Maj Belmont - you MAY see fewer LOA's going out early.

I really hate speculating class size, number of applicants etc because I fear that some kids may shy away from applying. Please don't. If you want to be an Army officer and attend West Point then APPLY! Don't let anyone discourage you. Just have a Plan B.
 
hopefully they drop all of the unecessay wheight so that the class of 2015 can have a fair chance.
 
got a little excited when i saw so many postson my thread, but just random talk ha. well anyway, yea i will start to get in contact with the coaches soon, i dont think i will be able to get to any camps though. If i went to West Point to play sports that would be more than awesome

What other AP classes have you taken? Are these two AP classes the only ones you are taking as a senior? Any AP math or science?
 
I will be taking german again, but it is not AP, it is CIS through the university of MN. I will also be taking a math class at either a local community college or at the U of MN, through a program called PSEO. so it will be college level, but not AP. as for science, unfortunatly no AP, at my school in order to do AP physics, you have to take AP calc with it, and I honestly dont think I am ready for AP calc just yet.
