Hi all,

I'll be attending NASS session 2 this summer. I was wondering if anyone could give me some specifics on the fitness test administered there? My apologies if it's already posted somewhere in the forum; I haven't been able to find it :frown:

Thanks in advance,

Alex

It's the CFA and it can count as the one for your application.

A quick Google search will find you exactly what you need.

In the time it took you to create this thread and wait for an answer, you could have not only found the detailed explanation of the CFA but also taken it multiple times.

^ That was unecessary.

The Air Force Academy's Pre-Candidate booklet has A LOT of information on the CFA. Pretty much EVERYTHING you need to know about the CFA!

https://admissions.usafa.edu/secure/Online/AcademyInstruction.htm Click on the link in number 2, download it, and when you've opened it, you will find a WHOLE section on the CFA!

You don't have to apply for USAFA if you don't want to, you can just download the instruction booklet for the very detailed info on the CFA! :thumb:

Thank you, Tina; that's very helpful!

Heads up- the timing is ALL off when you take the CFA at NASS. Everyone is doing it at once, so sometimes you wait twice as long, sometimes you go straight into the next event. It is a good judge of where you stand, but many attendees choose to retake it at home.

Thanks, vampsoul, that's helpful as well. Retake it at home...because with some of the activities there's no rest at all?

Also, I've seen different things: is the basketball throw kneeling or standing?

Basketball throw is kneeling. I remember having extra time between the bbal throw and shuttle run, but no time between sit-ups and push-ups. Sporadic, depending on traffic and whoever was running the event.

I believe that means... they say up, you go up, they say down, you go down.

How strict are they on the form of your down position when you're doing push ups. The guy in figure 16 is really low to the ground, and I don't think I can hold myself up at that position. Also, I see that when push up tests are administered at school, people don't really seem to care that your elbows are not at 90 degrees... or they don't even care if you lowered yourself down that much. I'm just really confused about that one bit. Thank you!

I thought that was the starting position. But I guess you have to return to the starting position, don't you? Well I guess we'll see.

DS mentioned at USMA SLS today they were fairly strict on pull-ups, elbows had to be fully & obviously locked at full extension.

When I attended NASS last year we took the CFA on our 1st full day at 2pm immediately following lunch. It was pretty brutal on the turf, so don't be disappointed if you don't do as well as you expected. Some kids ate way too much at lunch and ended up puking...don't be one of them. Also we took the PFA at 5:30am the next morning. The PFA is the usual fitness test taken by the Navy. They recorded our scores, but I don't think they had any bearing on our application.

Pull ups or push ups? How far do they need you to go down for it to count as a push up? I'm really afraid of slipping or collapsing if I lower myself down too far on the push ups or not going down far enough for it to count!

I think a lot of it just comes down to who is judging you and what "their" standards are. When my son took his at NASS last year, his squad leader just split the kids into pairs and they counted everything for one another. He also said that they got way backed up in some of the areas, and as a result, spent a lot longer resting between stations than the "official" CFA allowed. He didn't have anything not counted there.

The next week he went to West Point's SLS and ended up with 20 pushups fewer and half as many pullups because they were much stricter about exactly had to be done and didn't count them if they weren't done perfectly. Made me feel a little bit better that at least the WP standards hadn't changed since I'd been there!

But the bottom line was that he had friends who encountered either at both of those academies. And as Tina said, if you have your PE teacher administer the test, his standards are likely not exactly the same as the academy's. Do them the right way and you won't have to worry about it! (And relearn the right way while you're there!).

Individual judgment on "good" pushups does vary, even after one arrives at USNA. During one semester, a certain Firstie stood directly over DD during the PRT, and disallowed ~20 pushups. Every other semester, her pushups have all counted. That's just the way it is. Be prepared to do your best, but don't be surprised if your scores are lower than you expect.
