I was at a JROTC awards ceremony tonight, and happened to be talking to a retired Army Major, from the 101st airborne. He was describing something that he said he wasn't sure was done anymore(or ever), but that I should check, and that was rising seniors/firsties at USMA had the opportunity to go to Ranger school and get their Ranger tab over that summer, and then return for the last two semesters of school at WP.

Is this true?
Thanks

I believe they re-started that opportunity for firsties, but it was not offered when I was a cadet.

Negative -- Ranger School is only for active duty. Cadets are premitted to attend the Pre-Ranger course only. I know they sent cadets (USMA and ROTC) in the 70's, but it has been a long time since any kind of cadet was given the opportunity to go.

In the book "Absolutely American" one of the highlighted Cadets (Whitey Hertzog) went to a portion of Ranger School and if IIRC, he graduated West Point c. 2001? He didn't receive the Tab as it was only a short course as described above.

I will check with my contacts at USMA. They were talking of re-instituting it now that the summers have been lengthened slightly. If I recall, one of the problems was that the short summer meant that a cadet could not recycle a phase.

Thanks. It didn't sound like something they would do to me, I thought about the active duty part as well. But if you could check Scout, that would be awesome.
