Our DS just informed us that he will be shipping out from Oakland, for the Pacific, on/around July 6th. Where did the year go? I remember just dropping him off for INDOC and crying like a baby!!!
Anyone else get news of where their DS/DD will be heading off to?
Can anyone shed some light on what to expect for the next 6 months??

Our DS found out his ship yesterday. He is a bit vague on the details except the ship's name and his departure date.
Anyone know where you can find the ship's intinerary/route? I found its current location but not where it will be going in the future.

Congratulations to 2010!

you'll need to provide the ship's name and company before anyone here can help you out..

If you google the ship's name you should find some more info.

Our DS ships out on the evening of the 21st to pick up his ship on the 22 in CA. He and his sea partner are then off to China, Japan and South Korea. They are hoping to meet up with her parents in Japan.
There is a website where you can track the ship. http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/index.html
What an adventure! :thumb:

Try Facebook group KP Lubber's Line - Ship Information. Good Luck!

Our DS found out that he will be flying to Israel in two weeks to catch a humanitarian ship. Since he will be on a tramp ship, he won't know his next destinations until they depart each port.

Liberty Maritime vessels generally are employed carrying U.S. Government military and humanitarian/PL 480 ‘handshake’ cargoes. From what I understand, they’re a mostly tramping vs. liner operation. So the itinerary will likely change from voyage to voyage.

What is a tramp ship? I beleive I have alot to learn about Sea Year but I have some time my DS is A split.

When your DS gives you a departure date for sea year, what exactly is that date?
Is it the date they must report on the ship?
The date they catch a flight to their ship?
Do they usually fly out of New York- meaning they will need to get back to NY from home?

DS knows nothing more than the date they gave him and the name of his ship. His date is very close to the 4th of July which has me anxious about family plans as well him making all the connections on a very busy holiday weekend for travel.

Sorry to hear after numerous Sea Year lectures, etc. and basically getting through his Plebe year that your DS a) is either as typically non-communicative as 80% of all Midshipment at KP with their parents or b) slept through about 15+ Sea Year Lectures and didn't listen to a thing that either Captain Farmer or Captain Albert said to them that mattered.

Unfortunately the answers to your questions are "it depends" on what his orders say and what communications he has had with his ATR, that said, at this point he may not yet truly know as the details you seek may be getting worked out at thingsz get finalized between his ATR and the shipping company if he is a "B" Split. I say this because from what I saw during my own DS' first sea year for Thrid Class B"B" splits things end up being more flexible and less firm with any advance notice on their first ships as during this particular time (May/June) the KP ATRs are competing somewhat in locating berths for Third Class B splits with their State Maritime Academy counterparts who are trying despertely to get their students some berths on "real" vice school ships during a time that is coincident with their normal summer cruise so they don't miss any fall classes....

If you want some more specific thats that may be releveant feel fre to PM me, though at the end of the day until your DS actually talks more with his ATR or sends emails to him with his specific questions you probably won't know the details you seem to be asking about.

Thanks Jasperdog.
I think he actually doesn't know more than he has told us. He doesn't volunteer much but when we ask, if he knows, he readily shares information.

They are in the midst of exams so that is foremost in his mind right now. If anything he is practical and if he doesn't clear that hurdle first, sea duty departure dates are irrelevant!

Our ds just found out that he is assigned to the USNS Patuxent. We know that he flies out on July 7 to Sicily but he wasn't given any other information. We can't find the ship's itinerary on the ship tracker. Is there anyplace else to look?

USNS PATUXENT is a Navy fleet oiler, crewed by DON civil service mariners, under the control of Navy operational commanders. Depending on what the Navy has her doing, her schedule may or may not be classified. If your DS is flying to Sicily, he's probably meeting her there at a port call where she's taking on stores. She may well be doing Med shuttle runs re-fueling various Navy 6th Fleet combatants deployed to the Mediterrarean. He will see plenty of UNREPs (ship-to-ship underway replenishment), feeding the carriers, amphibs and "small boys" their fuel and avgas. Should be some nice port calls this time of year.
Not sure where or if her schedule would be posted, but many mids have sailed with the USNA fleet logistics force, so there are probably some upperclass who have insight.
I used to write the tanker schedules for the USNS fleet when I was stationed in Naples - lots of changes, very flexible, all depended on who needed what and where.

It probably won't be visible anywhere on the www. As CaptMJ notes, MSC ships under the direction and control of MSC N1's Itineraries are usually at least FOUO even when they are operating UNCLAS

Coolsailing, My son is flying home next week from Sicily. He enjoyed his time aboard the USNS Patuxent. Please PM me for info

We just spent about 8 hours with DD and her sea partner. By chance, they were assigned to a ship that pulls into the Naha port in Okinawa, where we are currently stationed. DD's sea partner was able to call home using our Vonage and we spent several hours shopping for items requested by the crew. When they went back to the ship they were loaded down with cookies, cakes, etc, plus all the items my wife baked this week. I guess we are the Far East Chapter of Cookie Cafe.
If your Mid happens to be on one of the other ships that pulls into Okinawa, PM me and my wife and I will be glad to run them around and show them the sights.
