So, as the day draws near...what do our young candidates fear the most? And what are they most excited about?

The thing Im most excited for is donning the uniform, especially the ACU and slapping that US Army tag (Im not sure if that is what it is called) onto the uniform. It gives me chills just thinking about it. Also, I am looking forward to throwing a grenade, rappelling, and even the gas chamber just to say that I did it. The thing Im most worried about is the APFT and being an absent minded idiot by forgetting something important like my rifle.

Name tape, usually, but close enough for government work.

Don't worry about the APFT. Not to incriminate myself, but I may have taken one with a hangover in my younger and less intelligent days. You can always gut out a passing score on an APFT.

DS's reply to these questions: Biggest fear...no phone and most excited about the Blackhawk ride over to beast.

Are they still flying some of the candidates to Buckner on Blackhawks this year?

I would say that I'm most fearful about the verbatim memorization and sporadic knowledge required of new cadets. The rigorous physical requirements seem daunting but achievable. Most excited about getting acquainted with my new buddy the M16.

In truth, it's anyone's guess. They may plan to do so. All of that depends on many variables. Primarily, though, it comes down to aircraft availability. It means getting aircraft assigned to support, having blade hours to fly them, the aircraft not breaking, and having cooperative weather. They can have everything planned perfectly, but if the time comes and the weather sucks, the cadets will be on trucks and not in an aircraft.

My biggest fear is probably the physical aspect. I could have prepared better than I did. Although I'm relatively sure I'll be alright anyways.

Most exciting thing: drill. I love drill. Any opportunity to do it is a happy thing for me. And from what I've heard we do lots of it on R-day.

Most fearful of: falling out during a run

Most excited about: mountaineering training

My APFT time is about 17min on average. Not good, but it started at 19 back in December, so it's a good improvement. But Rday is on Monday...

Just hang in there. You'll be ok. Remember that you stick out a little more as a girl. Dig deep and gut out the runs. :thumb:

Most nervous about: PT

Most excited for: The moment I put on a WP uniform and realize that I actually made it

Don't eat stupidly before a run either. You don't wanna have to stick your finger down your throat to make yourself feel better half way through.

Most nervous about: PT specifically pushups
most excited for: Doing all of the combat training (guns, grenades, rapelling etc.) I've never done anything like that before and I can't wait to do it for the first time

That's good stuff to be excited about! The chance to engage and destroy targets with vigor is one of the highlights of the lifestyle. Always remember that physical fitness is your first concern. Technical proficiency with your assigned weapon is a close, close second.

A good habit to get into is calling them "weapons" and not "guns." Guns are only found in the artillery, on armored vehicles, on aircraft, and attached to my burly and well-tanned shoulders.:thumb:

Most excited: The opportunity to do brutal stuff like low crawl through barbed wire, shoot weapons such as an AT-4 :biggrin:, gas chamber, and grenades. Excited about the opportunity to meet my new classmates and get to forge new bonds and friendships among a large and diverse group of people (I've gone to the same small school with a class size of about 100 since 1st grade ). And most of all, I'm excited about the opportunity to be apart of our nation's military. I think it will be a sweet moment when I get to see my acu's with my name next to US Army. I get pumped just thinking about it.

Most nervous: Physically, I am worried most about ruck marches. My runs are going great (although this last week of not working out might have some negative repurcussions ), but I have done some practice rucking at the required pace and even short ones have seemed tough. The concept of making 15 miles is the most daunting part of beast to me right now. Also my pushups could be better than they are now, although I have done many practice apfts and I'm not worried at all about failing I just think I would be able to do much better with just a little more work. Also, I think just as I am excited to be moving on to an awesome new phase of my life, I think that there is definitely uncertainty about it, which is for sure induces nervousness.
