Hey guys I just had a question. I just finished my freshman year of high school with a 4.0 (no honors, however thats changing my softmore year il have honors classes there) and student council, NJHS member, and rowing as my sport and i have lots of community service through my church, and i plan on continuing this and expanding my positives throughout high school. i want to gain admittance to the Academy more than anything.

this past year I was in my school's AF JROTC. at the end of the year I believe i was a SSgt. I understand that it looks good and everything and it definitely doesnt hurt to gain admittance to USAFA. however, do I really need it? All that i took from it this year is that the whole JROTC is sort of a joke, just a class and teaches you nothing about military except how to march maybe. I really dont like it, at all. I dont want to be in it. So my question is, Do i absolutely need JROTC to get into the Academy if everything else is going well?
thanks for your answers and help.

I never took any interest in JROTC, and never did it. I think it placed too much emphasis on drill and ceremony type stuff. But its not like your going to be training and kicking down doors, so I understand that that's about all you can do in JROTC. Some people love it. It isn't for everybody. But to answer your question. Don't do something you don't like. Not having AFJROTC isn't going to be something that will cost you admissions into USAFA. However, you need to make sure you have leadership and an activity to replace it.

If you want to still do some type of military organization. Look into Civil Air Patrol. While there is still a decent amount of emphasis on the marching stuff, a lot of people have gotten their private pilots license completely on the dime of CAP. I talked to a few kids at summer seminar who were on there way to completing a private pilots license with most of their hours coming from CAP.

I would say you definitely don't need it. I've heard time and time again, do things that YOU are interested, not what you think will look good. Yes it is important to have leadership, but there are plenty of opportunities out there.

That said, don't assume this is how all AFJROTCs are. I'm going into my 4th year and I absolutely love it. It has provided me with some amazing opportunities and a great group of friends. Yes, some units are jokes. But those are the ones that don't last long. You can tell the great ones. And not meaning to be boast or something, but I was proud to be the one to tie the Distinguished Unit streamer onto our unit's guide-on. And that is part of why I love it. Great unit, great people.

I apologize for the tangent but I hope I helped. :thumb:

Thank you for your input guys ! I know it can be looked at as " he doesn't like JROTC but he wants to go to the AFA? thats ridiculous ". it really isnt, as I have been thinking about the Academy since the middle of 8th grade, and I know I have what it takes. you understand what I mean haha.

Im interested in CAP however, you say they got their Private Pilot's ? Thats very interesting I didnt know you can get it through there. You have any more details on that?
