Anyone applying for nominations in New York or the Northeast Region?
Just want to know the competition size for the Class of 2015

NY and surrounding areas are usually quite competitive since they are close to West Point. Elsewhere the competition is still high in like new england. You normally are looking at a 40 % total chance for a nomination slot from last year.

On the other hand, if you live near Baltimore, getting WP nomination is much easier. Here everyone (almost) applies for Navy. My congressman's office got 10 times more applications for NA (150+) than for WP (8-10). You should move down here, seriously. Or better yet, move directly to Annapolis, where the Naval Academy is located and get WP nomination. There you probably get no competition at all to go Army Academy. "Beat Navy."

40% chance for a slot isnt as bad as i expected. I wish I could move down to MA/VA for a semester:shake:
Now I just need to work that much harder

Not bad at all. I put it that way since I'm from Maryland:thumb:.

Make sure you seek nominations from all available sources.

And once you open your file at WP. Continue to work on it. This shows your rep that you are serious about it and are making progress. I heard that they get updates before the nomination.

My paranoia with these "up-to-date" files won't let me skip a day without checking on my current file report so I'll always be on cue
It's cool that the admissions teams in the service academies intertwine so well with their counterparts. Information never gets lost so we all better watch out!

Yup, Long Island here! (Congressional District 01. Suffolk County) From what I've heard, it's a competitive district. That's why I'm trying to get everything sent in, in a timely manner, and ensuring that all my material is as high quality as possible.
And if not, there's always ROTC (applying for that scholarship) and it's always possible to try again next year!

I'm from Long Island District 3, Nassau County. Yea we live in one of the most largest and most competitive districts. I'm trying to get all the paperwork and such by mid-summer, beginning of september--latest!! The only thing hindering me are the teacher recommendations and SOE's because they're difficult to reach once school is over. I wish I had started this earlier when I first got the paperwork, but what can I do now?
Let's just hope for the best and pray:)

I'm pretty sure the 11th/10th district in VA might be two of the most competitive in the country. You don't want to move down here.

I'm not sure how competitive MA is but if anything it would be air force friendly.

I would guess the east coast is the most competitive. Wish I lived in Wyoming right now though :p

Trying to figure out where you got the 40% number. Sounds suspiciously like a SWAG.

Your best bet is to contact your admissions field force rep.

Here is how I figured a typical 40% chance based on data published. On Class of 2013, e.g., it is estimated as following:

Total application cases opened (for Class of 2013): 11017

Estimated applicants actually applied for nomination: 9364

Applicants who actually received Nomination (2013): 3729

3729/9364 x 100% = 40% chance on average. :thumb:

Of course my estimated 85% people who open their cases actually pursued nomination could vary. Lower that number, you get > 40%. Raise the number (>85% would be really high) you get no less than 35%. So, the 40% number can change lightly as well as affected by year to year variation.

Be very careful making such estimates, as that is an AVERAGE. In a place like Nassau county, where a Congressman may get 50 applicants, and nominate 10, it's a 20% rate. In a place like Wyoming, where a Congressman might get 10 applicants and nominate all of them, it's a 100% chance. The 40% says nothing about each district individually.

Yeah, I totally agree. It is an estimate average only. Never said it was for all areas.

Please allow me to clarify, as mentioned in Post #2, the 40% is an average using last years data and in some places in my state (MD) the chance can be much higher and NY would likely be lower. All in post #2. Totally agree with you.

Oh no, I'm not liking this percentage :frown: When I spoke to my liaison officer in March, he said there was about 55-60 applicants in Nassau County. My chances are plummeting... let's hope for the best:thumb:

I know what you mean. That's about the same time I have my schedule set for USMA. (My ROTC scholarship will be sent in once I have the earliest senior transcript with my classes on it and class rank, so that's early september) The teacher recommendations are the most difficult to get. I have two teachers already done, and my boss is writing my third. I asked all of them about this about a month before school ended, so as to give them time.
As for the SOE's, I believe the science one isn't working properly at the moment. My AP Chem teacher submitted her first one and there was no change in the portal. Admissions suggested resending it if the system would allow. It did allow me, she filled out the new copy and submitted once more, and still no change in the portal.
Regardless, good luck to you and the other candidates with the process and hope all goes well!

Hm, NY Congressional District 3... I'm just a little bit off, NY 05 here. We cover a portion of Nassau County too. It sucks so much here! I go to school in the city and even there I know a couple classmates who live in my district and are applying to USMA. :unhappy: But hey, at least we're not in Texas. At SLS I heard one of their competitive districts received 10 appointments last year (I'm guessing congressman's vacancy + a crapload of wait-listees)!

Ohhh NY-05... very close. KidFromNYC what process in the candidate portal are you up to now?

Right now I'm in the process of asking my teachers whether or not they would write up my recommendation forms for West Point; I've got one more to go (I'm quite possibly the worst math student in school so it's going to be tough...) I've got my CFA done and am waiting for my SAT scores and transcript to be sent. How about you hkmin93?

I'm right where you are except I haven't received any SOE's yet. I asked them months ago and gave them a resume but they havent gotten back yet and now it's difficult to contact them. I'm still training for my CFA and taking another SAT/ACT in the fall. If you don't mind me asking, what was your CFA scores?
