I just finished my freshmen year of high school and I really want to attend the
USMA

GPA: 3.6
Taking Pre-AP when AP classes are lacking
Have yet to take my SATs or ACTs but am taking prep classes
And go to a school district where it's nearly impossible to be in the top 20%.
so my rank is 267 out of 816

Sports: Played basketball in middle school, played softball this year but quit, but I keep myself very much in shape. I go to the gym daily and go running every other day. Also I participate in my JROTC unit's female PT team and we run, do push ups, etc. for competition

Leadership: I am in Army JROTC and am appointed to be my company's 1st sgt next year and the unarmed drill team commander. I have received the national award of Superior cadet. I already know drill and ceremony,

Extra:
-I volunteer at my temple with small children (I'm jewish)
-play the trumpet, I've made it my mission to memorize old fashioned military bugle calls
-In Model UN, where we sit around and argue all day pretending to be the UN
-used to be a girl scout

I strongly believe that my sports section is way under what an applicant's should be, and my academics is no up to par from what I'm looking at other saps that are asking of your opinion. But I believe I had leadership skills and am a step of head of everyone else, my JROTC unit is an Honor Unit with Distinction so I can skip over trying to be recommended by my congressman.
But I am afraid that I can't make it. So what do you think?

1. What does an unarmed drill team do? Sign language?

2. Look at the dozens of other threads just like this and compare yourself to their stats, and then let us know if you have specific questions. You'e already identified athletics, but you're almost too young for us to make a judgment.

Thanks!

No, you cannot skip over your MOC nomination as that is where the vast majority of appointments come from.

No, its just like a regular armed drill team just more boring, its like a step team. They only allow guys on the demilitarized armed drill team at my school, so I was stuck with unarmed.

Well, to my knowledge, they only have 20 slots open for a JROTC scholarship. So it's way more competitive to get one of those slots.

It's easy to make fun of unarmed exhibition drill teams especially when some of the teams present poorly thought out routines which sometimes can be most of the routines seen at a drill meet.

While step- and stomp-like and even “patty-cake” routines are quite common, using these nonmilitary styles as the sole effect of a routine is one of the reasons of the onset of boredom. Teams and soloists should not rely completely on nonmilitary styles to make up the whole of the routine; however nonmilitary styles can be incorporated to produce effects in the routine as long as they are not solely relied on.

Also, the shortsightedness of only allowing males onto an armed drill team quite possibly shows the inability of the staff’s inability to think outside the box. That is unless the female cadets are unable to perform the routine due to height or strength limitations.

You apply for all the nominations for which you are eligible.

It is extremely important that you apply to ALL sources of nomination that you are eligible for!!!

74% of nominations come from MOC's.
26% of nomination authority is military service-connected (which is what the JROTC nom falls under. Only 20 cadetships are allotted to qualified nominees of JROTC and SROTC units).

Everyone is eligible for at least 4 sources of nominations:
- your 2 US Senators
- your Congressional Representative
- the Vice President

In addition to your JROTC nomination, determine if you are eligible for any other Service Connected nomination like the Presidential (for children of career military). If you are eligible for the Presidential, apply for that one NOW!

Good Luck!!
