Hi all!

Just an "FYI" for anyone interested.

This morning I received a BUNCH of "4060's" for completion in September. That means USAFA is starting to look at those students that attended Summer Seminar, and others, that have "flashed" bright enough, early enough, to get them to be declared "candidate."

NO, I DO NOT know how to get anyone on that list...don't ask, I can't help you there.

BUT YOU CAN!

So...it's time to start...:thumb:

My son just noticed his USAFA application has "opened" up with a bunch of new information and forms that need submitted.

Thanks flieger83! Just got on and my application has opened up! I've been so anxious haha. Are not everyone's applications open yet?

aglages can you tell me when your son completed his online questionnaire?

I used to be able to get onto my son's online application. I had been using the link from his summer seminar stuff and it's not working any longer. Is there another place to access it? DS isn't around to ask.

Thanks for the info. He is listed as Candidate and will start the forms this week.

Thank you for the heads up, just checked my sons application. Now we have something to keep us busy this summer. :thumb:

Just checked to make sure my son's was open also and it is. Already lists his Presidential nomination so hopefully he will get an early look in September.

Boards will not meet until October for appointment purposes.

While it hasn't been "announced formally" this is probably a good call.

It is "possible" they MIGHT take a first look in late September..."they" always tell us that's the plan...

We'll see.

" Newbe mom here"
My son's application has "opened" up. A lot of new forms to be completed. My son has completed the ones that he could yesterday. He is on summer vacation here. I'm not sure if the teachers check their email here in the summer. Should he wait or send them when he returns to school in September? He is scheduled to take the ACT( first time) in September as well. Also, he will be taking the SAT's again in October. I guess what I'm asking is his application now states " Candidate**" status missing information" I guess I have a lot of questions regarding " early boards" and what does a bunch of "4060's" mean???? Again, I am new to this process. I don't mean to sound pushy but I would love to be informed on this process. He has completed his physical as well. Thanks for any information you can provide!!!! rangermom

Contact the teachers. Of course you don't know whether they will respond or not, but at least you are giving them notification that he will be requesting this info come the 1st day of school.

He will also need to contact the gc. Even though we were in the same situation as you, we were able to get the GC and transcripts done during the summer. The GC has to go online and fill out info regarding the school profile.

Missing information is could be many things, but seeing as he has no info from the school for verification that what he put on his PCQ, I am betting this is where they are coming from.

I would also start working on the nom process, typically around July the MOC's release their applications, many will ask for essays, transcripts, recs., some will ask for personal recs.

We were fortunate to have a great ALO. He met with our DS every few weeks over the summer to edit his essays. I would suggest before you submit the essays, kindly ask the ALO to review it. Remember these people have seen candidates who get in and candidates who don't, they are an invaluable wealth of information. AT THE SAME TIME, REMEMBER THEY ARE VOLUNTEERS. They typically have their own 9-5 jobs and families, so don't get bent if one poster has an ALO that emails weekly and yours doesn't.

IMHO, if he did really well on the SAT, you may not want to re-take it in Oct. Our DS had 1390 out of 1600, and we felt that he was above the avg on both sections by many points it would be better for him to take the ACT only. He took the ACT and scored even higher when it was translated, thus, they took his ACT scores. To me there are sometimes it is not worth it to re-take the SAT or ACT. When you start hitting the 700 mark, chances are you have very little room for growth that it is going to make a hill of beans of difference. If you are in the 600's I could see for trying again, because you always want to be above the median, the last stats I saw publicized for the incoming class's SAT had Eng at @660, and M at @680. Use that as a form of guidance when you determine if it is worth taking it a second time. I would even say if you are at 660 and 680, and you have weaknesses in other parts of your packet you should re-take it. Remember PAR (academics) is 60% of the WCS (Whole Candidate Score), you can be Valedictorian, have 790's on every SAT section and STILL not get an appointment, because you have NO EC's or you did really poor on the CFA. You can have lettered in every sport, be class President and have 620's on both and not get in also.

The AFA is going to look at the Whole Candidate. Typically every yr on this thread there are three types of candidate posting.
1. Obsessed with PAR questions, how do I look academically?
2. Obsessed with CFA questions, will I pass with these scores?
3. Obsessed with Nom questions, I have only 1 nom, and other people have 4, will I get in?

The commonality between all 3 types, is they know that is their weakness in their application when they question a specific part of the WCS.

EC's questions are very rare, and usually is the same question, I am athletic, but have never done school sports will it still carry weight?

For example, I am a dancer or do TKD. The answer is yes, but you need to make sure your ALO and your Regional Director know how much time, effort and recognized you are in that arena. To say you dance, well great, but have you competed? If so, let them know your ranking.

People assume they look at the Athletics as a how fit you are scenario, when in reality it is much deeper than that. The AFA looks at it for proof of commitment, time management skills, team building skills, self reliance skills, ability to handle pressure, etc. All things that will be needed as a candidate. Your CFA shows how fit you are, your athletics shows you as a person in a unique manner.

We all have walked your shoes at one point or another, we are all here to help you through the process. There is no such thing as a stupid or dumb question. Even if you think it only pertains to you, one thing to realize is that there are many lurkers and many posters who might have that same question, so speak up!

I take it back, there is ONE STUPID QUESTION...will I cry when they tell me we have 90 seconds to say goodbye?

Thanks pima!!!!! I will have a lot of questions I'm sure of it. Thanks for giving me your insight on AFA! I wrote this long reply and it was some how lost.LOL Anyway, thanks for answering some of my questions:) rangermom
ps: my son leaves next sunday for CG AIM summer session. I know there will be a tear or two when he leaves for that and I will be seeing him in a few days for graduation. I can't imagine when they go for 4 years!

Does anyone know how to switch your thing from prospective to candidate?

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't everyone's application now open? Or is it just those whose PCQ's have been reviewed and deemed candidate? I was deemed a candidate a while ago but my file in nothing special(at least for academics, good but my scores are only 26, 26, 31, 24, and 26 writing with good grades).

Drew hit your name in blue, and it will take you to your stats, from there you can edit your profile...at least I am hoping you mean this site

People will have status changed throughout the yr., but typically those that have completed their PCQ in the spring get the change all on the same day. The AFA likes to inform the ALO's of the candidates that they will be in charge of before the candidate calls and says HI I AM SO AND SO, YOU'RE MY ALO!
