A maybe silly question popped into my head: how often do Mids get/have to visit the dentist at USNA? DS has been at the Academy for over a year now and hasn't seen a dentist in a bit longer than that.

Do they have to make appointments for regular checkups or how does this work (are they told to get the teeth checked)? My Mid has no clue :redface:.
 
As enlisted we were always TOLD when you had Medical/Dental. I would have him check with Brigade Medical and make an appointment. We had the same problem with our MID and we forced her (gave her a hard time for over six months) to make an appointment. I don't understand why that is not a normal six month rotation procedure?
 
To add, my mid would never take the time to go so what I do now is I schedule a dental trip when he's on leave so I know that he at least sees our dentist twice a month. Good Luck!
 
Mine avoided Brigade Dental at all cost. I just paid for teeth cleaning when he was home on leave at the Holidays as at least I knew he would be home then and we could get it scheduled three months out.
 
We also did a dental one time on Insurance as a college student outside Navy Medical. Not Kosher but she had the checkup. They can be a pain but have him ask. The "greasy wheel":biggrin: My last dentist was picking out his civilian office furniture while he was working on me.
 
Our family dentist is hoping that no one related to USNA, the Navy, the federal government, etc. touches our Son's teeth. He has done a lot of work on them and doesn't want anyone else working on them.

BTW - They now look fantastic!
 
Navy, and more specifically, Brigade Dental are extremely professional and competent. USNA has a once-a-year mandatory dental screening for all midshipmen, and then they go ahead and recommend any cleaning or work done. Outside of that once yearly screening/cleaning it is the midshipman's responsibility to make further appointments.

And to clear up any confusion, USNA does have a fully staffed dental office (infact they've had one for more than 100 years).
 
sorry to break the news to you but your's teenth will be worked on by Navy dental. It is a requirement once a year, even in the Fleet I receive a weekly update on all of my Sailors current dental and shots status. It's no joke, they don't let you slide by and the Officers have to go see the XO if their Sailors continue to show up on the deliquent (DINK) list...so we certainly make sure the Chiefs get our Sailors to their appointments, not to mention it's even worse if an officer even shows up on the DINK list b/c that means they cannot keep track of their own medical/dental needs...so yeah, make sure you get him into the habit of ensuring he get's his check-up regularly.
 
My Class of 2010 grad only went to Brigade Dental twice, once Plebe year and the other time this past firstie year, also still has all 4 wisdom teeth as Brigade dental said they did not need to come out (he is having them out end of the summer before reporting to TBS - his choice). That was all he was ever scheduled for. Consequently he would ask to have teeth cleaned during winter holidays.
 
USNA'02: Good to hear they are making it mandatory for appointments in the Fleet. Mids seem to be in Limbo since I have to give her a really hard time before she makes an appointment. Then again, she could tear an ACL on the field and take an aspirin and cure herself.:rolleyes: I just loved the Colonel that pulled two of my wisdom teeth and broke one into about five pieces and then dug them out because "They may give you trouble later in life". Try getting pain killers twenty four hours later on the top of a mountain on the Cambodian border. Medic gave me Demerol and a bottle of Johnnie Walker. He was a great Medic.

TPG: I know they or short since our family dentist still says he is getting recruitment information from the Navy.

My dad was a Navy dentist, but that was back in the 50's. He has a lot of great stories to tell. He was based in San Diego and pulled a lot of teeth! Since then he has put braces on both my kids, so hope the teeth that grandpa gave them stay beautiful with the next generation of Navy dentists.:biggrin:

Perhaps he doesn't remember or they changed, but lately you get your plebe summer check-up, one half-way through youngster year, precommissioning business second class year, and then again firstie year.
 
Oh boy, I better try and make an appointment with our dentist then. The way it sounds tooth cleaning is not very high on USNA's list of priorities. DS had validation testing during the scheduled plebe summer dentist visit and never made it up.
 
Asked him last night about precommissioning Dental - he did not have a precommissioning Dental - it was done early in first class year before service assignments came out. Plebe year dental visit was at the end of the year - nothing youngster year. Like Pachrain he did not get a Plebe Summer Dental visit as also was taking some advanced validation tests when his company was scheduled. He was never rescheduled.
