Just picked up a nice FN Herstal FAL (L1A1) for a good price at one of Fort Campbell's many fine purveyors of small arms. Anyone else a collector/hobbyist with guns?

Oh yes...

Hi Power type here...long range competition, etc...and just fun shooting.

My shooting partner and I have fired together for quite a few years...one on the rifle, one on the scope.

HE has the armory, I simply have a small collection.

I don't suppose you're going to nationals at Camp Perry are you? My boss and I should be heading up there in August.

I'm an avid collector and also an Endowment Life Member of the NRA.

I actually would love to go to Camp Perry this year but...two trips to West Point this summer and a trip to Ft. Monmouth for USMAPS Graduation kind of took up all vacation for me this year :frown:

DS is also an avid shooter and actually bought his first (paid for and used his name in the background check as he's received a few guns from me in the past) Bushmaster M-4 while home on leave just before he went to "R" Day.

Scout, you need to join that website I told you about :thumb:

Gave up my FFL01 a few years ago (too many hassles, visits, bound book BS, high costs, etc) and instead now hold a FFL03 (C&R).

$30 for 3 years, and you can get everything shipped right ot your door. Anything 50+ years old or older automatically qualifies as C&R.

Your UPS man will start wondering why all these long thin packages with ADULT SIGNATURE REQUIRED on them are starting to arrive at your house. :thumb:

When you become a CRuffler, make 100 copies of your license and send one out (after signing the copies, never sign the original!) to as many places that you can (AIMsurplus, SOG, CenturyArms, etc) that sell C&R firearms, that way when you see something you like you can simply pick up the phone and have it sent right away.

Three full Ft Knox safes later, I'm running out of room.

I only have two rifles....

A Ruger Mini 14 and a 300 Weatherby Magnum.

I wish!

My vacation has NEVER coincided with Perry...YET. But it will...

The problem with having only long guns is that they're so hard to shoot.

I have a match set of S&W 4006. Does that count as having "Short Guns" :yllol:

Har har :thumb:

I meant it's so damn hard to find a public range that will let you shoot hi-power rifle rounds and has a decent distance to work with. You'd think TN would be full of it but noooo....

We're blessed out here in "the Wild West" of Arizona...my local range goes out to 500yards...and on the west side of the valley we have a 1000yd range. Of course, that's only open a couple of times a month.

But on any weekend, you can go to the 500 yard range.

I am already missing Colorado! I used a couple places on National Forrest land that were nice--natural U-shaped valleys, and I could set up the range how I wanted. Short range, medium range, paper, steel, plastic bottles, etc.--so many choices.
I went to a range in FL recently. Sitting at a bench only, paper only, 50, 100, 200m only, slow fire only. Kind of makes practicing for the competitions I enjoy difficult! :frown:

Take up residency in Florida where our County runs it's own fully manned and stocked range. They even beat Wally World on ammo and they have state of the art shooting facilities! :thumb: Unfortunately they only go up to 200 yards...hardly enough for a Marine and iron sights on his AR

haha, oh come on now. You can miss from much shorter than that. I know you can!

Not if he still wants to claim being a Marine! :yllol:

True story: last week my USMC "Buddy Plan" lifelong friend and I went shooting at the indoor range in town. Yes, we have two complete ranges, we're a real "RED" County :thumb: They only go up to 75 yards there but, you can shoot rifles. Hey, it's Florida and hot fellas...I'll take AC when I can
Anywho...this guy (he's a Doctor now) was his Series High Shooter (we were on the buddy plan but he went in another Series during his summer break from college) and he's alway laughed at my near miss 219 outta boot. I had to hear about the free set of Blues he walked away from Graduation for ever! It's a Marine thing

Well, I shot circles around his target last week, and he even had to admit, I shot better...:yllol:

TPG will well remember the "Toilet Bowl" Privates :yllol:

My best story was qual day at USAFA.

The instructors spent all morning explaining how dangerous the M-16A1 was, how most of us would barely be safe with it, and nobody would shoot expert.

Then they asked: "Anyone here think they're going to shoot expert?" I said: "Yes sir."

"You're a cocky SMACK, aren't you?"

"No sir, confident."

"Okay, have you ever fired the M-16 before?" "No sir."

"Okay...the bet is a case of Pepsi versus pushups for your tent, Agreed?"

"Yes sir."

Okay...it was a wind-less day, sunny, perfect shooting day...I got lucky and fired a perfect score.

"I thought you said you'd never fired an M-16! Did you lie to me Basic?"

"No sir, I've never fired an M-16. But I have put about 10,000 rounds through my family's AR-15 over the years..." :guns6:

We got the Pepsi's...and I caught hell for the rest of my doolie year from that guy! :shake:

We later flew together in Desert Storm...he had a great laugh remembering that day! :thumb:
