Exchange to USMA

Hey everyone,

I'm a zoomie that's going on exchange to West Point this fall and have a few questions about getting to the campus. I'm thinkin of flying into Newark on Sunday, 8 August, since we have to be there by 4pm I think. I've heard there's a bus that goes from Newark airport to the academy, is that right? if not, what's the best way to get to the academy from a new york area airport?

And if it'd be better to fly in that saturday night, tell me how all that would work, too :smile:

I'm sure i'll think of plenty more questions over the coming weeks.. thanks for all your help!
 
The bus line is GMK. On the 8th they depart Neward at 0900, 1200 and 1500
At Newwark Airport the bus is located in Terminal "A" Bus Courtyard. Cadets Arriving into Terminals B or C, take monorail to Terminal A. Proceed to lower level and walk outside into the "THE BUS COURTYARD" to Gate 15.

The USMA cadets use the GMK bus but they purchase their tickets in advance on post so I'm not sure how a USAFA cadet can get a ticket. I recommend you contact GMK and explain your situation. Maybe you can purchase a one-way ticket over the phone or email.

The "Air Train" transportation between terminals at Newark International Airport also goes to Penn Station. From Penn Station cadets can taxi/subway/walk over to Grand Central Station. From GC trains run to Peekskill or Garrison. Taxis are available from Peekskill and Garrison to WP.

While most cadets buy their ticket in advance, some forget, so they plan for that. You should still call him...but you should arrive early on that day in case the early bus is full. Chances are the later buses will be more full. I would be surprised if you cannot get a seat. What do your orders say? Is there a provision for arriving the night before (lodging, etc?).

Son, be prepared for a semester of such 'gentle ribbing.' But remember one important thing ... Big sky. Little bullet.
 
My son's visit to West Point fall of his senior year in high school happened to be during Air Force week. While taking the parent tour, we passed a cadet going to class in a very cute bunny suit. Another parent asked why a cadet was wearing the suit, big ears and all, to class, it was explained that it was Beat Air Force Week, the cadet was an exchange from the AF Academy and when he woke up that morning, all of his clothes were gone and the suit had been left for him to wear. Later that day, a large transport plane buzzed the Hudson next to the Academy -- advise a good sense of humor :)

My son always forgets to buy bus tickets and has never had a problem getting on a bus at either Newark of LaGuardia -- check w/ GMK -- great service and very affordable!

My wife was a USMA exchange cadet at USNA. During Navy week she wore whiteworks (the sailor uniform) and lived/hid out at the chaplain's house!!! My TAC cow year was a zoomie and boy did we have fun with him.
 
You do know that woopville has always had the reputation of being perhaps the least academically "challenging" of the SAs. I think this thread totally disproves that stigma. A zoomie on his way to an exchange semester actually asking a woop how to get there and apparently expecting to get the correct answer. If a zoomie tried to pull this off at USNA, he would probably end up broke, lost, and wandering around East Baltimore Street at 3AM.

Back in my day, we only did exchange weekends. However, we did have a Woop Company Officer. One year, we moved his office, lock, stock, and barrel (including working phone) to the head. Being a good sport, he worked out of the head all day, seemingly scheduling a lot of 'meetings' with those he thought might be perpetrators. The following year, back in the days of real newspapers, we stuffed his offiice until it was entirely full of newspapers under quite a bit of pressure. Buckled the ceiling so access that way was not possible. Of course one could not open the door since it swung inward. I thnk a cherry picker disassembling a window was the final solution. A little less being a good sport that year. The third year, we took up a collection and bought him a new car of the exact same model of the used one which he was driving, hiding it of course. As he was leaving the Yard for the day, about the time he approached his car, half the plebe class descended on it and totally demolished it. Much of it was little bitty pieces. Totally lost his sense of humor. Someone then, perhaps the Supt, presented him with his new set of keys and escorted him to the new car around the corner.
