I am axiously awaiting my PC's phone call as I'm sure many of the parents are today. Does anyone know around what time this will be? I would hate to miss it.

They can come at anytime. Ours usually came in the afternoons. The first call is really fast. Enjoy it! We had our son call one of our cell phones so he could get us at anytime.

Yes! Keep your cell phones with you and ON all day. Ours came in the late afternoon @4ish - it was 4 years ago, but I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing - one of those moments. The D.I. was standing over him while we spoke so remember that they are not completely "free" to talk - it was a five minutes conversation tops. I asked him on a scale of one to ten how it was and he gave it a 7 - sounded about right. Having a list of questions ready by the phone (yes/no answers - D.I. there) is a good idea since one can get carried away by the excitement of the moment - or at least I did  Enjoy!

First phone call

I believe that first call came around 5:30pm for us. I kept the cell phone strapped to my hip with the volume on full. The first words out of his mouth were: "This place is CRAZY". As many have told you, it was largely a one way conversation. Enjoy the first call and know that even if they sound a little (or a lot) stressed, they are well taken care of.

Thank you for your advise. I am anxiously awaiting the call!!! Got my list & because his Dad & I are divorced - we practiced the 3 way calling!! Either one of us didn't want to miss a call.

Keep the phone charged full and volume on full. Enjoy the call, in about 1-2 months they'll be longer, especially fi there is a TM (team movement=where they go off campus for something; ie; band, sports...):shake:

what kind of questions should we have ready to ask? not sure what to say...
The first that comes to mind for me is "Do you need anything?" I remember shipping off a package right after Indoc - although for the life of me I couldn't tell you what we sent!

Calls have started!

Received our call a few minutes ago. I had just walked outside and put my phone down for the first time since six am and of course my son called by the time I answered he had hung up. Immediately after my husbands phone began to ring. Thank goodness...
It's going to be a rough day here. Son not to enthusiastic today but getting by. Didn't ask for anything except mail. Said he would send us a list to mail for next week. I could tell he couldn't talk freely and finally he was told 5 seconds left and we hung up. Geez, his letters sound so much better. I will rely on the letters!

What company is your son in?

I remember last year my kiddo called around 2. He was very positive about everything though he did say "crazy place" somewhere in the conversation lol. I was concerned about his voice because it was so hoarse that he could barely speak but it was better the following week and back to normal before parents weekend. Lots of yelling took place obviously! I loved getting letters from him so that's the only thing I miss about indoc! He has told me more than once indoc was the easiest part of his Plebe year.

Be careful about sending goodies right after indoc (I didn't send any during). I baked enough homemade choc chip and applesauce cookies (apples from our tree) to feed all of Band co. and they were confiscated and he never saw any, didn't even get to taste one. I hope someone enjoyed them because they were a lot of work and frankly homemade can be healthier than some of those chemically enhanced energy bars!

skoobie - don't fret! getting by is GOOD!! Remember it's a "HECK" of a place to be at:thumbdown: - but then "HECK" of a place to be from:thumb:. When they call, stay positive - four years of cheerleading, coaching and counseling goes into overdrive starting now.

Thanks for the heads up and tips McMom. Sons voice was very hoarse also which I wasn't expecting but understand now.
Dinghymom, I was proud of myself I and listened and didn't let my emotional self show. Its a learning experience for us as well and we'll be as ready as can be for sea year! Thanks for putting it in perspective. Appreciate the support.
Now off to shop to fill those care packages for after indoc. Just wish there was one exciting item to buy!

Be Patient

We live on the west coast and did not receive our first call last year until almost 6 pm. A word of advice: try not to build up this call so much in your mind that you are setting yourself up to be disappointed. Rather than thinking of it as a chance to find out everything that is happening to your DS/DD, think of it as just a quick moment for your candidate to hear your voice and your brief words of encouragement. As much as you need this phone call, your DS/DD needs it more. So put your own needs aside and concentrate on how you can use this 5 minutes to make the coming week easier for your child. It is good practice for later in the year when your DS/DD needs you even more.

got the call

We got our first call today at about 9:00 our time which is 10:00 KP time. Thank goodness we had decided not to attend first church service today or we would have missed it. I thought it would be in afternoon. Our son is in first company. Five minutes, my foot! At least he could explain his white armband I saw in pictures. Poison ivy! On medication and cream. He loved the sailing and water training. Seems to be doing good.

Hmmm...our son is in 1st company too...and still no call :frown: We are not leaving this house...we went to mass last night just to make sure we would be here all day...

My DS is also in 1st company and no call yet.....:frown: staying put until the phone rings! Trying to stay busy....

We also received our Son's call. Hoarse voice, but, up beat and seemed positive. Health was good and no negatives in his voice or words! He even wanted to make sure he spoke to his younger brother... Was not a 5 minute call, actually lasted about 2 - 2 1/2 minutes. He was even given a 20 second last call. Great to hear his voice, we love trolling the photos for sightings of our D/S(what does that stand for?)

Usually "Dear Son." Of course, if they've done something particularly exasperating, the "D" can stand for something else.:shake:

Received our call from our son just as we were leaving Sunday School to go home and not stay. My husband is in charge of the prayer request in our class. As we stepped out, my phone rang. He said, Hey - then - I have to go. I thought that was going to be it. Shortly after that, he called again and we were able to speak to him a bit longer. Sounded hoarse from all the yelling he has done. Said he was able to write in his journal and that we would have a book to read when he came home. Didn't want anything for himself but to send food for the whole Platoon, 38 plus DI's which I thought spoke volumes. We are sending him things that have been posted on this forum for cleaning and stuff.
He said it wasn't all bad, just not what he thought it would be and the only complaint he gave was the kids that were not doing what they were suppose to do and keep the company in trouble.
He sounded good, except for the voice, and in good spirits.
