When does Indoc actually end? My son thinks it is going on for 8 weeks... I understood it was 2 weeks but we also heard that it was sixteen or seventeen days. What is the date and do they do anything fun to celebrate? Thanks

Sunday July 25th when the rest of the Regiment, less the B Splits, return to Campus.

If school starts on Wednesday, what do they do on Monday and Tuesday besides getting class schedules and computers?

Anything they are told to do by the upperclassmen. They buff the floors, clean the heads, etc. They also will usually be assigned new roommates after Indoc. and they have to change rooms before classes start. And of course there is always more plebe knowledge to learn... Rest assured that they will be kept very busy and will have little or no free time for a long while.

FYI, there's a memo on the parents page of usmma.edu that there was a problem with the order of computers for the plebe candidate class and there will be a delay in getting the computers to them. They were ordered July 16, and it will take up to 15 business to arrive. Faculty members have been notified to adjust class assignments.

I have heard through various channels that they are allowed their own computers. Is this true?

I would be very hesitant on that one if by "own" you mean "from home."

The gov't goes through real pains to keep their networks secure and allowing a computer that has been at a residence for a length of time is not a great way to keep security.

"Trust but verify" is a statement that everyone should become very familiar with over the next four years. If you don't hear it from someone with direct authority at the Academy (and that does not include a midshipman) then I would verify with someone who does.

Uhhh....expect regular emails in four years :shake:

Not to sound abrasive, but, nothing is regular at the Academy....especially the first year. Go with the flow and just be glad to hear from them when you do.

This is a good time to get used to the idea of less communication. When they go to sea, you may not hear from them for weeks at a time. It's the nature of the game.

:worship: Again, this is from an 09 parent who went through this, is still going through it, due to D/S working at sea and knows EXACTLY how you feel.

:tank:

we are not allowed to use our own (from home) computers at school. only academy issued computers are allowed. the email address for your kid will still be the same as the one mentioned before, and they will be able to email as soon as indoc is done with (or as soon as they get their computers it seems).

time with plebe in chapel

Since indoc is over can we as parents attend a mass and then stay with our plebe for an hour? I recall someone telling me this was a way to visit, any input will be greatly appreciated.

yes, you can go to mass after indoc. and 'visit for an hour'. when i was a plebe that's what our CTO told us, but peoples' parents stay until like 4pm every sunday. i highly doubt their CTO will call for a muster one hour after mass every sunday. in other words, you will be able to spend at least an hour after church with your p/c.

Is skype allowed for plebes on campus

My pleebe wrote home that he is not allowed to use skype or any for of video chat is this correct... I thought that was going to be allowed

After recognition he will be able to - "skype" and "video chat" are basically the same as phone privleges and subject to the same "class rates" as them.

As far as going to church and staying that starts after Indoc is over so the first Sunday you'll be able to do that is Sunday August 1st. I know this is generally hard on all sides parents and incoming mids but you really need to give them some space, right now to allow them to adjust to the whole USMMA life thing and later because frankly, after they make the transitiuon to Midshipmen from High School Senior, they will likely demand it, themselves in their own way.

Again in this age of constant electronic connectivity it's hard to get used to but believe me it's a far cry from "back in the day" when before email, we basically talked to our parents once a week at best until recognition and then not much more often after that. In those days during sea year we sent a post card from our first and then last foriegn ports of call, and maybe one other with a few words on it and then called from our first US Port of Call....collect of course.... Now even when they are on ships with little or no cnnectivity you'll usually get email from them when they go to a Seaman's Club and calls via cell phone and local sim card while they are in port..... It's really amazing how the world has changed in 30 years, though I'm not sure all this connectivity is realy for the better....

All privileges are earned and conditional. Each company will be given slightly different privileges. (Skype is very definitely a privilege not a rate.) Not only is each company of plebes evaluated separately, but each company at KP has a different personality. You will drive yourself nuts if you try to compare privileges your plebe has to those someone else's DD/DS has. Since privileges can be given, they can also be taken away. (Add this to your growing list of sources of stress for the plebes.)

One thing that I've learned in the last 2 years is that every time I think I understand something, it either changes or DD informs me that I am, in actual fact, clueless. I found, and still find, the entire KP experience fascinating. Like I you, I stared at every Indoc photo looking for DD. (Boy was I glad I had a girl - so much easier to identify with hair on their heads.:thumb:) I watched these boards constantly and asked questions. I discovered that DD actually resented me trying too hard to be part of HER world. I still misstep sometimes with her. But I've come to accept that I am a complete outsider and can never share the experience or understand it.

Our roller coaster ride is only half over. We've got Sea Year 2 to go yet! And licensing! I continue to live by the motto: Semper Gumby!

Thank you all for your reply and clear information....Please forgive the anxiety its all a learning process for a mom to let go

We've all been through that anxiety. This is a crazy process for parents, very different than sending a child to a "normal" college. We all need to stick together and support each other, just like our kids need to work together to get through KP.

I'm not sure the anxiety ever goes away. It doesn't matter what year your child is in, if they start to make noises about possibly failing a class, it definitely adds to the gray hairs. (Then they have the nerve to comment on how much more gray you have now. . . .) I'm currently dreading Saturday - time to put DD on a plane back to KP. She was actually able to get an Internship for four weeks where she could live at home. Boy do I feel spoiled. She promised that we'd be ready to kick her out by the end. But it didn't happen. Going to miss that young lady . . . . One more tri and off to sea a second time. She can hardly wait.

thank you for your understanding. So happy for you that your DD was able to get an internship at home(what a treat)...how can that be done, any tips
