school supplies

Just wondering with classes starting next week- will our DD and DS's get everything they need or will they need the basics????
 
Unless the NEX has a lot more supplies in stock than last year, you might want to send a box of the basics, including some printer paper, paper, pens, pencils, notebooks, etc. There has definitely been a problem keeping the basics in stock for the first part of the trimester.
 
I rememebr sending a package and then bringing supplies to parents weekend notebooks, one for each class for 2 tris, pens, pencils, TI Calculator. I felt like we were back in HS. The NEX was crowded and ran out of supplies. There also may be an upperclassman who will do a Staples run, but you can't count on it. Staples may also ship directly.
 
I remember placing a couple of orders that we had shipped directly to her. Among the things we sent were new towels and T-shirts. I also got a request for a couple of basic 3-ring binders. Now, school supplies are on DD's shopping list every summer for before she returns to KP.
 
Printed paper as in notebook paper or as in paper for them to print on with a printer? My son has not asked for anything and I am sending him things that I find they need from here so if a complete list could be listed here, I would appreciate it and send it to him. I don't know but he may like the fact that I am sending him what he needs before he asks? It is just a momma's guess.

He has all that has been listed except the paper and notebooks. Does it matter what color of notebook? Black, blue or any other color?
 
Printer paper is available at NEX, but like everything else, they run out at the beginning of the year. I sent notebook paper, printer paper, pens, pencils, notebooks (any color and size depending on preference), dividers, highlighter, stapler, hole puncher, scissors, black and silver sharpies, and white out. DS took his calculator to indoc with him. However, when it died a couple months later, he was forced to pay a rediculous amount for the same kind at NEX. Oh well, at least he was able to get it replaced quickly with mininal hassle. The NEX at KP is very small and has limited selection and quantities on most items, but it is better than nothing at all.

Ruled white paper is probably best for the notebook if your mid is male, given that whole don't ask, don't tell thing is still in place, at least for a while longer....:biggrin:
 
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. Just returned from Wal-Mart and bought lots of basic stuff- if my DS doesn't want or like it he can share with others that can use it.... He knows I have an addiction to school supplies (must be the 20+ years of teaching). He too took his calculator with him to indoc but really wanted the TI89- after much research- bought if from the NEX over the phone for him, that way it's there when he can get it.
 
flat rate boxes

Thank goodness for flat rate boxes. I just sent 2 boxes of school supplies. It only cost me 26.00 and they were both heavy because of the paper and spiral notebooks. I was able to fill air space with granola bars.:yay:
 
Just for thought.....The secret according to my UPS person is the size of the box, not necessarily the weight. I had to mail books last week to DS (yes, my DS wanted to study ahead -- it is not a typo), six very heavy math books, and it was expensive not because of the weight, but because I had to jump to an 18" box size.

So I crammed 14lbs worth of school stuff into a 12 x 12 x 8 box and it was just shy of $11 and will be there, because of mailing on a Friday, by Tuesday from ATL to KP. I hope that will get him started. I wish they had their computers for email.... :eek3:
 
Last year, I wouldn't have imagined sending my plebe anything unless he asked first, I would have heard, "this isn't grammar school". While I understand the computers are delayed, wait for the Sunday phone calls and listen to what THEY ask you to send. While most advice you get here on the forum is GREAT.....every plebe is different!!:smile:
 
Agree that it is good to wait for requests from DD/DS before sending stuff. But, your PC won't realize that they need a notebook,paper, pens, and pencils until after indoc has ended. They aren't thinking about school just yet. By the time they realize they need some basics, it will be too late if the NEX is sold out.
 
Thankfully DS asked for everything I sent. The only thing I could not get in the box that will go out with the next one is duct tape. I am sure Sunday's call will include requests for more items. I want to sent treats, but I will wait for that request. :rolleyes:
 
I agree that you should wait if you can... and i know it is tough.
I sent DS most of the stuff mentioned here on the forum. he always thanked me but when he came home for breaks, I noticed some of it was left home, and when he brought everything home in June before sea yr, a whole bunch more of it came back- never used.

What did not come home and what he always needed: duct tape (early on, not later in the year), Tide Sticks, and lint rollers (big and tiny, pocket size)- and of course cookies.
As others have said, they are all different so it really does make sense to wait and ask them- except perhaps SOME basic school supplies. The more stuff they have, the more stuff to put away after their rooms are trashed during an inspection. I'll let jasperdog and some of the other alums go into that little tradition in more detail.
 
Oh, a little sewing kit and alarm clock were immediate requests from DS but again, maybe not all of them need these.
 
Make sure the alarm clock is only an alarm clock without a radio.

The flat rate boxes are from the US Postal Service. You can even order them to have them delivered to your house to make life easier.
