My daughter will be attending West Point this summer. Any suggestions for a high school graduation present that she'll be able to use?

Most of the things I've thought of will be staying at home.

Granted, she's a young lady, but my father bought me a very durable and stylish watch that I wore all four years, through all manner of training, and to Iraq twice. I always thought that was the perfect gift.

Thanks, Scout Pilot. Anything specific you'd recommend?

Oh gosh, that's tough. Why couldn't you have a boy?

For a young lady, rugged though she may be in terms of physical and mental grit, I doubt she wants a man-size hunk of steel dangling from her arm. for my graduation, my father got me a Luminox Navy SEAL 3001 Dive watch, which at the time was the only thing they made. As you can see on that site, they make much more now. The Luminox was virtually indestructible. To wit, I once had it ripped off in the pit of a very...um...vigorous...concert in Philadelphia. I found it afterwards, missing the glass, strap, and all but one hand, looking as though it had been put in a rock crusher. But it was faithfully ticking. I sent it to Luminox, and for $100 they rebuilt it. I still have it. It's still the brightest night time watch I've ever used, but only the numbers and hands glow, so it's not annoying like Indiglo. That watch kept time for me on many, many missions on both deployments, and I could see it without white light or without presenting too much of a signature. Crazy thoughts to have about your little girl, I'm sure, but someday she'll be doing those sorts of things.

That watch has since been retired, after almost a decade of yeoman's duty on my left arm. Now, I wear this watch that my wife gave me on our wedding day. It's quite a piece, though I've never found it to be as tactically useful as the Luminox, nor as rugged. But that's the price you pay for style.

Not knowing your daughter, I would humbly suggest the following: a Luminox Ladies Colormark 7051 Dive Watch. It comes in a variety of colors, though I would say the standard white is the best choice for professional reasons.

It's reasonably priced ($230, give or take) and will last her for years. Plus, it's a utility watch and it gives you or mom a chance to buy her a "dress watch" for Christmas or some other event.

Hope this helps, just one man's opinion--a man who likes useful gifts.

Thanks, ScoutPilot. Appreciate the input.

I visited a local watch store and found a Casio G-Shock that should get her through her first year. That store didn't have Luminox, but I read really good reviews for them. That may end up being a birthday / Christmas present down the road.

Again, really appreciate your experience.

A thousand years ago, when I was a cadet, Plebes used to have to "ping." That meant scurrying along the walls of the barracks at an exaggerated position of attention like some sort of bizarre race walking. At Christmas, my parents gave me a very expensive watch. Upon my return to West Point, I promptly ruined it by scraping the face against the brick wall of the barracks hall, while pinging to my room. I do not believe that Plebes are forced to ping any more, but, if you go with a watch for a gift, you may still want to focus on functionality and durability over style. Save giving a dress watch for graduation from the academy!

Does the watch have to be black only or can it be any color?

IIRC, it can be any color. But remember that Cadets are young professionals. I don't recommend a bright pink watch on a future officer. Black/neutral colors or a natural steel/silver would be best IMO.

Plebes don't ping anymore? When do that stop? Do they still have to square corners and walk with arms parallel to the ground?

As a female, here are a couple of suggestions.

Gold posts (earrings). You can wear them at USNA, so I assume you can at USMA as well. Just be sure to understand the mm size permitted/required.

Other jewelry, if she's a jewelry person. No, she can't wear it while in uniform, but she will have leave at T-giving, winter break, next summer, etc.

Does she collect things? Yeah, she probably won't need/keep them at USMA, but she will someday have an apt/home.

A nice pen. Forget the Cross pen & pencil sets -- get something pretty or funky but also comfortable to write with.

A calculator per USMA requirements.

A Kindle (for when she's home). I have one and LOVE it!

USNA Plebes can not have watches during Plebe summer. My son says he has no concept of time as the clocks on P Way do not work. But, we did buy him a watch similar to what Scout Pilot suggested and he left it at home with the idea that we would bring it as soon as it was ok to have it. We also purchased a new cell phone for him, but again, he can not have any type of media during Plebe summer and some media is not allowed during first year. The best part of going to the Navy Federal Credit Union before embarking on Plebe summer was to open an account with all of his graduation money for a debit card to be used at the Mid Shipman Store.

Calculators are an issue item. Non-issued calculators are not permitted for exams. Only the model issued is permitted.

Shows what happens when an older USNA grad tries to comment on USMA!

A gift card to her favorite store or someplace like Amazon.com, where you can buy almost anything, is usually much appreciated.
