I tried submitting my personnal statement for my CIS form..

However, when I copy and paste it from Microsoft word 2007 The form will delete all my paragraph spacing and indentation...thus making my essay look terribly un-organized.

I contacted my regional director and he said it may be the software, but I have internet explorer 8 and Microsoft word. He said there is nothing else he can do then.

So now am I stuck with this messy looking essay? does anyone know a possible solution to the problem?

yes I have, no success

My son finally gave up on word formatting to paste into the web forms. He edit's in Word, then cut & paste into a draft email, which has no formatting. (or you could use a simple text editor)

Hyphen's for major bullet items with no indentation.

spaces & asterisk for indented bullet items, etc.

Enter a "return" to start a new line, etc.

Get it looking the way you want in an email compose window or notepad type text editor, then cut & paste into the web form.

It's tedious, but works.

Microsoft Word has all kinds of hidden format characters embedded. When you paste it into something that does not know how to interpret those "hidden" characters, you get unexpected formatting results.

First of all, there are formatting limitations associated with CIS. You shouldn't have anything more elaborate than paragraph breaks.

I would paste it into from Word into something simpler, like Wordpad, and resave it in .rtf format or .txt format. Then copy and paste into CIS.

Did you use italics, bold, or underlining in any way?

If your formatting is too fancy, it becomes more of a distraction. Keep it simple.

Ok I did what you suggested.Didnt work :frown:

I copy and pasted my statement into my notepad on yahoo. it has no formatting things

Heres what happens:

Once I Paste it all into the personal statement section it stays...UNTILL I hit the "next" button and I go to the "summary" page.

As soon as I hit the "next" button I see that it automatically moves all my text over...thus deleting my indents.

I contacted my regional director because It says if you have application problems to contact him, and basically he said he cant help.....

And no I am using no bolds, italics, etc...

Yahoo is another web based form. You really need to use a simple text editor like notepad or similar there on the PC.

Also, you have to hit enter(return) twice if you want to skip a line, etc.

This could also be a browser issue, what browser are you using? IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera??

I just tried putting my writing piece into my computers "notepad" program like youve suggested.

Once again I experience the same exact problem as before:

It retains all my paragraph indents UNTILL I press next...then it automatically shifts it over.

How has nobody else had this problem!? It seems like its the CIS form that is messed up. ive tried word files, pdf's, notepad, draft email....nothing works. and the guy they say is supposed to help me says he can do nothing....Im frustrated to say the least :unhappy:

Wait....

The only problem you are having is that the paragraphs don't indent? If so, that's completely fine...as long as each paragraph is seperated by a line.

Or is the whole thing just a formatting mess?

It was deleting my indents and lines bewteen paragraphs. When I copy and pasted from my notebook it allows me to keep lines bewteen the paragraphs. So the only remaining problem is that it will not retain my indents, I dont want to seem like someone who makes a stupid mistake like cant indent my paragraphs.

I had the same problem with my personal statement. When I pasted, it deleted paragraph indentions and quotation marks. I could manually insert quotation marks but not indentions. I gave up and submitted anyway, I probably should have used hyphens or double spaced. I hope they recognize the paragraph changes and are used to formatting problems.
