In a story sure to become a recruiting legend for the Marines, Cpl. Matt Garst cheated death in Afghanistan when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) and absorbed the blast with the stoicism the Marines are famous for.

Garst blacked out after the IED went off, and the next thing he knew he was standing upright fifteen feet away, clutching his rifle, while his fellow squad members looked on in shock.

Marines who witnessed the event from inside the compound caught glimpses of Garst's feet flailing through the air just above the other side of the building's eight-foot walls. The explosion knocked him at least fifteen feet away where he landed on his limp head and shoulders before immediately standing back up.

"My first thought was, 'Oh ****, I just hit an IED,'" he said. "Then I thought, 'Well I'm standing. That's good."

Well, Someone is sure looking after him!

That is one of the wilder stories I've heard.

I wonder what he thinks everytime he leaves the wire now. Maybe a sense of invincibility or maybe a little more fear than normal?

Reminds me of a USAFA grad that's in the US Army now. On a different social network he had a "typical" name.

Then he wasn't online for a while and we all knew he was "in country."

Then he was back...told us all about how on patrol he was standing near a corner, took a couple steps, and the IED went off 4 feet from him!

He woke up in the evac tent, bruised, temporarily deaf, and with a bunch of small shrapnel injuries: NOTHING VERY SERIOUS! :yay:

Since then his screen name is: IMMORTAL ONE

I'd say this marine falls into the same category!

Just tell them to watch out for 400+ year old Scotsmen with swords...

Suddenly Mel Gibson comes out from behind a tree with his blue face paint and sword :p Wow IDK if I could publicly become Immortal, seems to go against lady luck IMO

I was thinking more of Duncan MacLeod...

But we digress...I'll say it again: this is one VERY FORTUNATE marine. And it's a nice "feel good" story when most of the time we're hearing the sad, tragic ones.

That would be an awesome "Thread" Sir. A place where all the "good" goes, instead of just a bunch of random "good" postings. Sorry about all the " " lol
