Is it this Tuesday the 3rd? Guess it could be anytime of day other than meal time. At least for the Sunday calls we could be pretty sure that they would happen in the afternoon given chapel was in the morning.

Time of day for the call will depend on each company's daily activities. Also keep in mind that some Plebes will be standing watch during their company's phone time. The watch-standers will get to call, but it could possibly be as late as the day after the "designated" day.

Tonight! Tonight!

Just read this on the USNA Facebook discussion page:

"Received an e mail today from our chapter, said phone calls will be as follows:
company A- E 1900-1930 PM
company F- K 1930-2000 PM
company L- P 2000-2030 PM

All information is always subject to change due to schedule changes."

Just a hint, part of what is great about the 24-hour clock, is the fact that it doesn't need AM or PM. :thumb:

By the report from DS it seems that they see light at the end of the tunnel and its not a train coming at them. Very up beat and to quote him "I don't see what the big deal is, this isn't that hard". Gave him a reminder that its the end of plebe summer in sight not the end of his plebe year.

He is looking forward to PPW and to the "end of isolation from the rest of the world". There is a bug making its rounds and he has suffered the effects the last 3 days. His newest friend has been the porcelain lifesaver :shake:. They were granted some extra rack time the last couple of days, but he said he spent his time with his new friend.

Sickness aside it was a great phone call :thumb:.

Aug. 3 call

Poor kid, bad sprain to his ankle on the obstacle course, but he sounded upbeat, better than last time. His dad says he sounds fine but I still think a mother knows...

Hey, looking for other Colorado moms/dad headed East for Parents Weekend.

DS sounded really good. Called from church choir practice. He did the obligatory whining about room inspection and uniform inspection. Got a big Black X because his glasses were crooked (broken from soccer). Guess they aren't indescructible as advertised! he loves sailing since it's so relaxing, actually enjoys the obstacle course and is very happy that he is getting so fit. Sounds like the 2nd set of detailers came in with a bang and have since been okay. Can't wait for PPW, said NO to lunch with us at King Hall (Gotta get outa here!) and NO to the Sunday Brunch. Wants us to go to church though. Hopes that we can meet his sponsor family that weekend. Can't wait to see him!

DS sounded very good but very tired. He was also at Choir practice and seemed relaxed. Still has plebe hack and doesn't believe it will be gone until after plebe summer. Likes new detailers. I asked why he looked mad/mean in the photos that have been posted and he said he's supposed to! Not looking forward to the 'great migration' when they change rooms. Doesn't want anything new for his room until after that. They've been issued laptops and a desktop monitor before the move. Doesn't know if he'll be able to FB during AC year. Depends on his company commander. He's very much looking forward to meeting his sponsor family and feels very lucky that 3 guys in his squad are from Maryland! I'm happy about that too. Nice to meet some of the natives! Hope everyone else had good conversations and no horrible problems to overcome.:thumb:

Good call from our son also, everything seems to be going well, new datailers are "cool". Says everyone is sick and because of that they're actually getting a little more sleep time. So now, as his mom, I'm worried about him being sick. It's so hard, because for the last 18 years I have taken care of him when he's been sick, now there's nothing I can do. I know I need to trust the system, but I also know you other plebe moms out there can relate. I even asked him if I should send some Vit C and he said "nope, they've already given it to us." So I'll try not to worry but it's hard. 10 days and counting, we can't wait.

Good call also. In good spirits, sees the end in sight, second round of academic advising today - has 19 units and wants to add a class in Russian  , laundry mix up caused some headache, inflamed ankle (not the one that was broken) so has been doing swim PEP, D&B will do Colors on Sat morning of PPW, new detailers are less confrontational - do what's expected and you'll be rewarded - don't and watch out - but not being set up to fail, can’t get to Midstore so needs a few toiletries, don’t need to bring anything to PPW, told of some comical happenings…

All I can recall.

It is very rare that Plebes are prohibited from using Facebook. Generally, the only computer restriction involves "media privileges" - which means no music, YouTube, or any kind of streaming video/music for entertainment purposes.

Замечательно!

I validated SIX semesters of Russian when I arrived at the Naval Academy and then, stupidly, majored in Aerospace Engineering. I could kick myself in the head to this day. I should have majored in Soviet Studies (which was a major back then) and could have breezed through the next four years.

I took a couple elective courses from the Soviet Studies Department just to get an easy "A."

I think your son will really like it.

Russian just looks scary because of the Cyrillic alphabet. But, it is mostly phonetic. Each letter makes it's own sound with very few exceptions, unlike English and other languages.

Also, they don't have the word "the".

Plebe Summer just seems to be getting easier when, in fact, it is pretty much the same. The Plebes have adjusted to the routine and they handle the pressure much better. The perception is that it's getting easier when, in actuallity, they're getting better.

That's the way it's supposed to be!

Congratulations to the Class of 2014. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, that "light" is a train coming down the tunnel called "the Brigade" and Chemistry.

Great call again. The only negatives, he has the Hack and had to take an SIQ day because of fever and has been on LLD because he can't stop coughing. Said there were so many sick that they got some extra rack time. Also has pink eye and was told to "just put a warm cloth on it". Said his new detailers are tough but fair. "At least they explain to us what we did wrong so we an correct it." He feels they are more 'organized' (that's my Type A son talking ) but I suspect the plebes are the ones getting more organized.

He's looking forward to the Confidence Course, which they haven't gotten to do because of the weather. Said the weather has been much nicer the past few days though. He loves his company (Foxtrot) and platoon (12). Is a little nervous about the academic year. Majoring in Aero taking 18 credits. Likes Drum & Bugle and Choir but has so many other things he wants to try. The best part was when he looked around the chapel and said, "This chapel is beautiful! I can't believe this is my college!" He sounds very content to be there, which makes me very happy!

DD validated Chemistry. :thumb: Gets to take Physics instead.

Am very happy that they get to FB! Not that DS will talk to us but because I can lurk and still see what he's up to! He was supposed to take Spanish for Plebe Year on our recommendation but is taking Arabic instead  That's what he wanted to take and I think his stubborn youth took hold of him. We have heard from other Mids that Arabic was so hard especially Plebe Year and that they had to stay for Thanksgiving and Spring Break because they were struggling. Anyone have any input on this?

Chinese Characters, Arabic Script and Cyrillic may be the hardest transition for those schooled in traditional Western languages. They have to learn a whole new way of reading and writing. I have not heard of anyone doing extra study during Thanksgiving or Spring Break but maybe during a summer block? That said, it may be a difficult transition. My daughter and her roommate are Chinese Majors but they both were exposed in high school so it was not unfamiliar before they entered the Academy. I would take the Spanish and pump up the grades:thumb: if Arabic is what he wants to sign up for more power to him. If he is considering Arabic for a Major he will have a lot of overseas opportunities during summer evolutions and semesters abroad.
