Plebe Parents: do not break rules -- or brag about it on Facebook if you do

My Mid is a detailer, and just emailed me re: a mother who raved on Facebook about an "extra" phone conversation she had w/ her plebe, courtesy of his new sponsor family's cell phone when they met the other day.

A detailer saw the Facebook post, and boy-oh-boy, has her son and his ENTIRE COMPANY paid for this violation.

Use your heads, parents.

I hope the son has more brains than the mother!

And the Sponsor Families are supposed to know all the rules after all the briefings? Remember, the INTERNET can be accessed by anyone. They do check on everything. Maybe the PLEBE has Dad's brains? It is a statistical probability that it can happen on random occasions.:thumb: Sort of like the Chaos Theory.

So at Navy it's forbidden to even use the phone at your sponsor's during plebe summer? At AF the rules seem to be that of course you can't have a phone but if anyone lends you one, it's okay. My son managed a couple very short "unscheduled" phone calls - one when a friend's mom was at an event he was at and lent each of them their phone quickly and once when a cadre member lent a few kids a phone when they got weathered out of their flight on airmanship day.

Of course the kid who brought one of those fake "barbasol" safes with a cell phone hidden inside was a completely different issue!

This wasn't at the Sponsor's house. It was at the initial meeting with the Sponsor family on the Yard during Plebe Summer. They don't get to go to the Sponsor's house until the beginning of the academic year. Calling from the Sponsor's house during Plebe year is no big deal. They can call from the Yard during Plebe year after Plebe Summer.

Can't believe detailers have nothing better to do than try to find parents on Facebook.
Also, if true, one of the reasons I don't particulary care for the sponsorer program.

Any detailer that has that kind of time on their hands is not doing what he/she needs to be doing!

I would be very surprised if this was even true. Sounds more like a Bancroft rumor, or a detailer wanting to impress their mother.

All of these "don't do it because a detailer will find out" is a product of over protective parents imaginations. We do not set out to bust plebes. As a detailer last PS, squad leader my 2/C and on brigade staff 1/C I can tell you the last thing on the minds of the upper class is "spying" on the plebes. Really we all have better things to do.

As for Parents and facebook - get smart - set your privacy.

Hell, at the Air Force Academy, seniors loan CARS to the Doolies. That's allowed, from what I understand. At the Naval Academy that would be a HUGE conduct offense for both parties involved.

The amazing part of this story is not so much the parent talking about the extra phone call on Facebook, rather, the detailer taking the time to ferret out violations on the internet by searching the last names of the Plebes and perusing the parents' websites. C'mon!

Weird - if you ask me.

And then making all the others pay???

Actually, it would take about 2 seconds. My guess is that they go to USNA's Facebook page, click on the discussions tab where parents of most companies have a thread set up for their company. Find your company and wham! multiple discussions about whose plebe got to make the surprise call. Since full names are used there's no guesswork involved. In addition, parents have posted details about their plebes' medical issues, emotional states, problems with them calling girlfriends instead of the 'rents, etc, etc... Just take a look - you'll be amazed at what parents are posting.

My son told us their detailers printed off pics from the plebes' Facebook pages to show everybody. Favorites seemed to be pics of them with their girlfriends/boyfriends.

No matter how easy it may have been to garner this information from the internet (and you're only speculating on the methodology), I still feel there is something unseemly about it.

I mean, if the Plebe, himself, has a website - that's one thing - but cyberstalking parent sites is just ... well ... creepy!

Certainly these firsties have some other aspect of leadership to learn than to be an undercover spy on those they lead. And not even them - THEIR PARENTS!

Actually, I don't really know how I feel about this. I'm willing to be talked out of this viewpoint. But, my visceral felling was that it just seems ... wrong.

Just thinking: maybe it wasn't the detailer him/herself who originally discovered it but a classmate on leave. Maybe it was a post to another site, like the official USNA site on FB?

In a way, that's almost worse. The detailer takes second hand information and uses that information to punish all the Plebes in the company (or squad); information that is unsubstantiated and gained from a parent, no less.

I don't know. I still don't like it.

Don't think it was on Facebook that Detailers saw it. I remembered some photos from USNA2010and07 Dropshots photos from Sunday afternoon when I was looking for my Waldo and thought how strange that Plebes were talking on phone - thought maybe the photos were mixed from some other upload. Just went back and looked and, sure enough, it took less than ten seconds to speed through the photos to confirm. You can actually magnify the Dropshots photos and see the nametags of the Plebes! This had to be how the Detailers knew. This kind woman who lives in Annapolis has been posting hundreds of photos almost daily so that we can catch a glimpse of our children and it may have backfired this time. Such a shame. On the other hand, rules are rules, and some Plebes are learning that the hard way.

That is done for an entirely different reason and has nothing to do with trying to bust a plebe.

And for all the plebes and plebe wantabes - SET YOUR PRIVACY TO ONLY FRIENDS while you are a plebe. Make sure you do so for your photo albums too! BE SMART. Even friends of friends is a bad idea during plebe year.

There are also numerous reasons that Plebes could have been on the phone. They are allowed (or at least we allowed them last PS) to call their Sponsor Parent if the Sponsor parent was unable to make the meet and greet. They could have been standing with a roommates Sponsor Parent when the detailer allowed the phone call to be made...

I still really believe that this particular detailer may/most likely be exaggerating the whole "story"

Detailers are not there to spy and bust! Plebes.

My son has been amazed by this as well. Many of his friends have already borrowed upperclass cars to run to the BX or similar - and they've been actual cadets for not even a week yet!

I can honestly say that I never borrowed a car while at WP. Had my own firstie year and certainly wouldn't have driven one before then. Well, when my husband was a firstie and I was a yearling he did teach me how to drive his manual transmission car around the parking lot (I'd never driven one before) but that was about it. And I can't imagine having lent my car to anyone, particularly an underclassman!

Sorry - I now return you to your regularly scheduled Navy thread! I was just asking because it seemed to me like something that would have been allowed if the sponsor allowed it, but I'm sure the plebes knew otherwise!

^^^
You got that right! Worst we had was the police blotter in the local paper :thumb: and no stalkers taking pictures during Plebe Summer.

Life before Facebook was a lot easier.

I heard on the news that Facebook top the charts as the internet's most "frequented" and "disliked" site - all at the same time. Doesn't that pretty much describe cocaine?
