Lesbian Cadet quits West Point, citing DADT

I guess some people would be impressed with this cadet. I'm not. I have absolutely nothing against homosexuals or having them serve openly in the military. I do however have a problem with a person applying to and attending one of our military academies under false pretenses. And that's exactly what she did. She knew exactly what the policy was prior to applying and accepting. If she wanted to start a political and social crusade, she should have done so prior to apply and accepting an appointment.

Now maybe she thought that she could handle the DADT policy for 9 years and not let anyone know she was gay. I have a very hard time believing that she thought she could. Anyway, whether she dropped out because she's gay or simply because she didn't like the place, she had that option. So at least the rest of her class can move on now.

I agree with CC wholeheartedly. I for one am tired of every officer who gets out under DADT making a media circus out of it, as though they're the victim of some pitchfork-wielding mob who drubbed them out.

She has been admitted to Yale under a scholarship for GLBT students. Two more free years?

Amazing how she resigned from the USMA in August and has already managed to get accepted into Yale. I thought the application process to Yale took many months to complete. I wonder if she would have resigned without the Yale scholarship.

No doubt that this wasn't one of those: "2nd year is up, I tried, I just can't deal with it". I help a lot of kids get into colleges. Including the "Biggies" like yale, harvard, stanford, and princeton. She didn't just decide in May that she couldn't deal with the DADT. She had this one planned out for at least 9 months. Probably sooner.

And you're right to question her motives. If she hadn't been accepted to Yale, or some of the other schools she probably applied to, she probably would have stayed at Westpoint. I don't know this woman personally, so I can't say for sure what's going through her mind. But personally, I believe the academy wasn't her first choice, and she's using the DADT as an excuse. The article says that if "SHE" can get the DADT policy lifted, she'd re-apply for the 2011-2012 school year. Sorry, but I'm calling B.S. on this. This is the military, hence the government. "She" doesn't have the power to have the DADT lifted, and she sure in hell isn't going to see such action become implemented in the next 6 months. She's pulling what we use to call in poly-sci and stats "The Impossible Finite Argument". When you present hypothetical statements that are impossible to happen, therefor you can never be proven wrong. E.g. A white man saying: "If I was black". A man saying: "If I was a woman". A poor person saying: "If I had grown up in a privileged home". These are all examples of basing a debate on arguments that are impossible to validate. She is doing the same thing.

Bottom line: She will get out of the academy. She will give some B.S. arguments about "If the DADT policy didn't exist...." She will claim to be a victim and how her life would have been so much better if...... Truth is, the DADT is not going to change in the next 6 months and even if it had, there's no proof that she would have been happier or excelled more without it. There's a lot of people who leave the academy every semester for some many reasons. She's simply using a reason/scenario that can't be proven either way. That allows her to be the victim and no one can dispute it. Personally, I'm glad she's leaving. Our academies and military services don't need her type of person in the military. Military individuals and cadets deal with undesirable situations every day. And most of them learn to deal with them. If she really wanted to serve in the military and attend the academy, she would have dealt with this undesirable situation; and got it changed from within. There's a lot of Non-Gay individuals who are helping to change it. She could have dealt with it from within the system if she truly wanted the military. She doesn't really want the military. The DADT is just an excuse. Just my opinion, of course.

I agree with everyone else. She knew the policy, period, end, dot.

I also find it interesting that she will be attending Harvard this fall. Traditionally, transfer students go through the same admittance process as new students. That means she knew her intentions many many months ago.

Lesbian Cadet quits...

Good riddens, we don't need people like this in our military.

PIMA: Not Harvard - Yale. Although if she had applied to Harvard under the same circumstances she would have probably been fast tracked also. I agree that the application process for Yale is a long one. I assume that her application would have been filed many months ago. Do you think that the GLBT Scholarship application committee was salivating with an application from a current USMA Cadet? Don't forget that a few years ago Yale gave a full scholarship to a former member of the Taliban Government. A person who had no prior education credentials. When the media started asking questions the scholarship was revoked. Hey! That's Yale. Always the "tip of the spear" unless any one of them has to stand in front of one.

Wouldn't she have to get transcripts sent or get professors to write recommendation letters? If she applied for the GLBT scholarship months ago, wouldn't that count as "telling" and get her kicked out anyway? It's pretty fishy to me that she waits until a week before it's time to sign the commitment. I wonder how long until she gets a book deal.

Transcripts?? Who needs transcripts when you are "rejecting" applying from a SA for a GLBT Scholarship at Yale? According to the story she got an immediate recommendation letter from one of her professors. Maybe she has a previous application on file with Yale. They might go with the old application and a current update of courses taken and "new" current GLBT status. Who knows?? Book deal probably on the way.

Do we even know if it is a requirement to be homosexual to receive this scholarship?

The news posting said she recieved a GLBT Scholarship. I wouuld assume you would have to declare your approved preference to apply for the available scholarships. Far be it from me to destinguish among the GLBT applicants. Any of the above declared would qualify for the scholarship. Did some of that touchy feely crap at work and found out one thing. Always was glad that my female half also liked women.

It's not so much that the application to Ivys is a "long process." It's the fact the there are DEADLINES to the applications. Probably sometime in December/January. I mean you can't apply in August to start school the next month.

There was something similar a few months ago. Except it was an ROTC cadet. Same concept though. The issue was whether she should have to payback or not.

I agree with most people here. Could care less about her orientation, but to knowingly go into a school with taxpayers funding the education, and her knowing that she's going to dropout two years later is wrong. That's something like 200k. And not only the money, but there were hundreds of people who would would have taken that slot to start with. Boy would I be pissed if I got rejected from WP for the class of 2012 to only later find out that someone was knowingly going to drop the slot.

What a terrible way to try to make an example. She made an example at the cost of 200k, and atleast one person's future who could have taken that spot. Hefty price.

"DEADLINES" When it furthers the cause! Get real. They couldn't care less about application deadlines if they could make a statement and make some news. You don't know Yale.

A lot of vitriol towards someone none of us know personally, who is 20 years old. I read this as someone trying to take a moral stand, even if not everyone agrees with the substance of her views or the way she has gone about publicizing them. And yes, I agree that it is really unlikely she'd return to West Point and think that may come off as a little disingenuous. But for those who doubt the sincerity of the motive--and agreed, none of us can know for sure--I think she will come in for a lot of hate and abuse. One can quietly walk away before Cow Commitment with no repercussions--why subject yourself to that if you don't believe in it?

Anyone here paying taxes paid for part of her education. As they have invested in her, they are free to criticize.

If she wanted to serve she could have remained in, and just held on. The DADT repeal is in the appropriations bill. A review board is talking to various service members to get their opinions.

She didn't want to serve, plan and simple, and she wasted tax payer money in the process.

Yup. LITS hit it on the head, as did ChristCorp. She used this issue as a way to quit without having to say "I quit."

DADT will be repealed before her class graduates.
