Okay,

I don't really hate them, but OMG for the last 3 hours my house has been rattling every 5 minutes due to obviously some exercise that includes major field artillery.

I have lived on AF bases, where jet noise is an issue, but that is a walk in a park compared to this.

All I can say is HOLY CRAP! How do people on base live through this? Also, are there any studies regarding orthopedics since my whole body down to my teeth are shaking when it goes off!

BTW we live 20 miles away, but as the crow flies, it is probably 3.

I find the sound of arti to be peaceful and reassuring. Perfect to fall asleep to :shake:

In the AF many people have license plate holders that say JET NOISE...The Sound of Freedom.

PIMA.
The people that live around Ft. Lewis can relate to this. Yelm, WA which is right on the edge of the Ft. Lewis military reservation gets the worst of the artillery noise. Fortunately I live further away so we only hear it occasionally, depending upon which part of the reservation they are using. Even in our house 15 miles away you feel the thud in your body. I don’t mind the sound of it since it isn’t all the time and it brings my husband (former FA mechanic) fond memories.

What I find annoying is when the Chinooks fly over our house. They are so dang loud you can't hear anything else!

Take a vacation on Emerald Isle And have the low flyovers from Cherry Point or New River. Stay in a Hotel anywhere near Fort Ord and listen to the beautiful sound of ARTI in the distance and know you are not downrange. Used to sit on the top of the car outside the runway at McChord and watch the afterburners light overhead on takeoff after an alert. The sounds and sights of freedom exactly. It does rattle the house though, and sometimes the mirror and glasses on the Bar.

LOL. I'm sure all of these unpleasantries only commenced AFTER you moved there? Maybe a realtors forum would be a more appropriate place to complain.

Nephew is currently at Quantico for Summer Officer Training School. Will be going down for graduation next weekend. Hope he likes the sounds of freedom every morning:thumb: I am sure the barracks rattle even after the NCO's rattle the barracks.:thumb:

Probably Deployment. New River was very silent the last couple of years. Not a lot of low level fly overs on the beach. Not like it used to be when they ran all day long and we got some great aircraft pictures. Still hear the ARTI and watch the lights during the beach assaults but it isn't the same without the brown shoes. Do they still call them that?

Cannon Cockers makin' Boom Booms!

Our DD leaves for VA TECH tomorrow, so luckily I will only have my teeth rattling on one day instead of two!:thumb:

I just noticed that...very interesting, this might explain why it was so loud last week compared to any other time we have heard it. All day last week it was overcast and very humid.

As an AF wife, depending on which direction the noise was coming from we use to joke...OH they must be taking off on 090 or guess it is 027 today! The beauty in the flying world is they actually all set off in a short time span and then you have silence for a few hours. The negative is they do night missions too!

Your story made me laugh because, when Bullet went to CGSC with the Army, I had the same scary moment, but it was because nobody told me the 1st Wed. of every month the prison tests their sirens. All of the sudden, at 8:30 a.m. I hear the sirens go off and I am left there going, HOLY CRAP 2 weeks here and somebody has escaped!

DS was all set to go to VA Tech under his USMC Scholarship and we just drove through there Monday on our way home from A Day weekend, what a beautiful school and area! Good luck to your DD PIMA.

Not long ago we heard two huge booms and our building shook like it was coming down! Just found out it was two F-15's going super sonic over western WA. Scared the crap out of all of us.

I read about this and wondered if you heard it!

Back in the day..... 60's and 70's sonic booms were really common. Occassionally they would break a window.

Max,

Thanks, DD already called this morning and she is in heaven. Tech is a beautiful campus. For anyone who likes the look of Hogsworth, (Harry Potter), than you will love the look of this campus. It was a 12 hour day, and I am glad that I have 9 months before I have to endure it again!

Back on topic,

I guess Quantico did their entire training session yesterday while we were gone because it has been silent all day long. Heck I didn't even remember that it was going to occur until I came back to this thread.

When the Space Shuttle lands in Florida, and approaches from the south, it sets off a sonic boom like you can't believe! House alarms, car alarms and people everywhere taking cover!
