Thought I'd post a happier thread....well until you get the bill parents...believe me the cost of parents weekend will pale in comparison to what is heading your way with sea term, rings, ring dance and...oh yea..i'll know in a few months...the cost of the graduation celebrations!

The 2011's Mids picked up their rings today, and, they are officially their rings to keep! They can't wear them until after Friday's night ring dance at the Gotham in NYC. Woot!

Congrats 2011 Mids!!!!!:beer1:

My question about the Ring Dance is this, where do the girls come from? There isn't enough at the academy to accomodate all the guys there and some of them do not have girlfriends back home to travel to NY for the dance. Just wondering.

If so, how do they meet before the dance? Do they just go out to the streets and ask the girls if they have a long dress and if they say yes, then they ask them? hahaha That's what I told my husband they do. haha

Well Shutterbug, uniforms attract the opposite sex. In a less sensitive age we might have even said young guys in uniform are "chick magnets". I, being able to frighten babies and curdle the milk in their bottles with my looks at 200 yards, have never experienced this. However, I can assure you, a supply of sisters, cousins, and general well wishers always seem to appear to fill the need. To wit, several newly minted midshipman went to Belmont earlier this year to hob nob with the rich and famous. Not only did they get in for free and got great seats to boot, most of the pictures I was allowed to view had some very pretty girls posing with the midshipman. When asked my DS replied he had no idea who they were, but there always seemed to be a pack around them!

Each girl at the academy is required to have 9 gentlemen escorts :)
Oh wait, I'm mistaken ;)
(They find 'em... or the other way around )

When they return from their second sea year each member of the second class who doesn't have either a girl or boyfriend is issued a package of powder which when placed in water grow into life sized members of the opposite sex you know like a combination "sea monkey/Stepford wife". The one(s) the returning midshipmen show interest and affection for begin to thrive while the ones they are not at all interested in quickly die off and do not progress past adolescence.

Apparently, at one point there was a scientist/Physics teacher in the 50's at KP who developed this amazing stuff and the secret has been passed down using some sort of very detailed "pony" so the tradition can be continued. Further they don't advertise it but it also seems the required ingredients need to age at least 24 months so the cost of the materials is clandestinely included in the Plebe Year Midshipmen Activity fees that have already been collected. Fortunately this is the one thing the administrative proctology exam all things of this nature were subjected to by the GAO and DOT IG that wasn't changed.

I'm surprised this isn't discussed in more detail with all parents during that short talk by the Senior Staff when you drop your kid off for Indoc....

Also please make sure your DS/DD knows they only issue one set of these "Post Sea Year Sea Monkey/Stepford BF/GFs" and if you somehow let all yours die then you have to go to plan B or C.

Plan B is to grow a replica of a BF/GF using a "Chia Pet" kit from a dollar store, to make this work for you it's also suggested you take the elective "Creative/Bodacious Topiary" as soon as possible after your "Sea Monkeys" all die.

Plan C is begging your friend or a classmate to set you up with either his GF/BF's average or homely looking friend or if you really want your style cramped their sister or brother who is nearest your age but whom you better not even think about trying to get to second base with during the event or associated weekend. The more attractive the sibling is of course the greater risk you are playing with fire....

Japserdog, love your sense of humor and your reply. Thanks for the laugh. I will tell DS about the "sea monkey/Stepford Wife/GF" powder package. ; )
P.S. Just wondering, do they come in all sizes, hair color, skin color and brains? What happens to them after the Ring Dance? Where do they stay and thrive while growing?

The Stepford properties of the sea monkey/"thingies" mean they sense exactly what sort of hair and skin color and IQ the Second Class mids find most pleasing and they slowly develop/conform to those properties. For those mids who have no definitive consistent preferences the results can be most disturbing and bizarre. That's how some of them morph into some really weird sort of creatures you know as the kind who inspired those sort of "the kind of girl you won't take home to Mother" sort of song lyrics when we, their parents generation, were younger...

Jasperdog thanks for the laugh.
As far as the cost of the rings, ring dance and graduation festivites , just click your heels and repeat "No Tuition, No Tuition " as often as necessary.

Class of 2014 mom

I know the class of 2014 freaked at the $150 for PW tickets, but how much are we talking about for the ring, dance, etc.? I might need to start saving now. :)

My son son laid out $2,600 for the dance bids, girlfriends flight and the ring.
The ring alone was a cool $1,500 as I recall. His mother and I offered to help with the expense but he declined our help and picked up the entire tab using money he had earned at sea.

I know several of the 09 Mids were part of a beauty pageant at a Polish Festival at one of the local townships on Long Island. They obtained their dates from there. Some will find local girls they meet at BHT. Others will ship in dates from home while some will rely on the generosity of fellow Mids to ask "sisters" to the dance. Either way most, if not all, will have a date so the ring can be dipped into the waters of the seven seas!

I know our Ensign dropped at least $3,000 on the ring, the tickets, the room, the meals, and his date. Oh…and the dry cleaning expense for trying to get the drink stains from a spilled Cosmopolitan out of his choker whites!

Thanks for the laugh, jasperdog!
We just got the email from DD about ordering her rings. She's looking at between $1400 and $1700 for dress and battle ring. DD's ring costs will come out of the college fund we had set aside and that has hardly been touched so far.

She has also been asked to this year's Ring Dance. I guess someone's Stepford date went wrong.

Seriously, I'm surprised at how positive the tone of her emails lately has been. I guess she is really feeling that she is over a hump having made it half way. She is getting excited for 1C year. After this tri it's back out to sea and when she returns, she will be 1C. Wow! Where has the time gone. We'd better start saving up for graduation weekend costs.:thumb:

Indeed where has it (the time) gone ... DS just arrived once again on the Left Coast and joined what, if the stars align, will be his own last ship (he's a B split). While it's clear he isn't wild about the fact when he returns to campus in November he is looking at 5 straight trimesters on campus until graduation; it IS clear, he too, is seeing a flicker of light and the end of the tunnel and he is convinced that it is NOT an oncoming train but rather something good.

In some senses it seems like just yesterday we waved to a kid, and that's what he was, as he sauntered into O'Hara Hall to start indoctrination. In other moments, when we discuss what he is doing, why he's doing it and what he wants to do going forward, it seems like eons ago, he clearly no longer thinks like a kid when it comes to any of those things. Nor dare I say do any of his and your DD's classmates. I'm just glad that it's also clear they haven't forgot how to ave some fun from time to time either!

For the Parents of P/C's who frequent this forum, I know it will be hard for some to help their DS/DD keep a positive attitude and persevere in the coming weeks as the coming weeks feature their first encounters with some real challenges - first trimester midterms and finals. I also know that for those DD/DS who will find themselves feeling like they are looking down the barrel of a loaded gun, no matter what you say on this topic, they really won't find much refuge from those feelings until AFTER they've weathered the storm and survived - so these next statement is really for you, their parents even more then them. Here it is: It really all does fly by in what seems like the blink of an eye. For all of us parents the "seminal/defining Kings Point moment/experience" comes at different times and is marked by different specific events and conversations, but in all cases the moment is indeed when you realize this is absolutely not a) the same child you sent off to Indoc, and b) you really have no reason to worry about them anymore no matter what they decide to do or where they are doing it - although being a parent, you'll probably just choose to continue to do so.

As for our children the seminal moment seems to be when they decide that no matter what they are going to finish what they started and then go at the rest of their lives from there....

Sorry for the touchy/Feely moment/tone/ramble it's just one of those sorts of moments occurred yesterday for me...

Baxted, my son must have been with your son's group! We have some fun photos of them together. Ya, chick magnet is still ok to use....cuz that is what they are while in uniform....they are also grandma magnets....when our ds was on first liberty last September, a grandma came up to him and wanted to set him up on a date with her granddaughter! Hubby and I cracked up. And yes parents, your ds or dd first liberty is an experience in and of itself. You will cherish the memories...:thumb:
