My son just received an invitation to visit the Academy for a weekend in September. Anybody have any information about how these come about?

USNA candidate visit

Not sure if there are other ways but one is by nomination from BGO. As I undertand it, BGO's are authorized to nominate those they consider to be well qualified candidates for these visits. DS received e-mail from BGO advising him that he was being nominated, presumably to make sure he could be available and make allowances during an already busy senior year (academic and athletic perspectives). We just returned from a visit to USNA and admissions brief but hope DS gets this opportunity as well. As I understand it DS will be paired with a mid and go through the daily routine to get a more realistic view of what academy life is like. Not sure if rising juniors have the same deal but check with your BGO for details.

as a current junior, are u suppose to contact ur BGO?

or it is simply a helpful step to do so?

Came in snail mail today. Was a surprise since he just started his junior year in high school. He did report his first ACT test to the Academy in April so they do have his name. We also visited the Academy over the summer and went to the admissions briefing.

DD received a Junior CVW letter today as well! Kind of the last minute considering their weekend is mid Sept, but welcome none the less. Anyone, know if this is over multiple weekends or just a one time thing?

Do you guys have the date on that? Just curious for my son who is a senior. His BGO had contacted him with the CVW dates and there were Sept, Oct & Nov dates listed. He'd asked for the Oct one if possible, but then hasn't heard anything back. When he called his RD last week (regarding a different update), he asked about it as well just to make sure they knew he was interested in the October one. The RD's office said they would put him down (but I don't know if this means he is on the list to go or just on the list as having expressed interest), but said right now they were working on the Junior CVW visit. Wondering if that was the Sept date he'd been given originally (and his BGO didn't know it was for juniors) or if it's yet another weekend. Thanks!

Is there anyway I could get ahold of the academy and see if I could stay or visit for awhile? Or is this just some kind of thing that you have to be admitted? I'm going to be in the same class as your son! :))

Advice from Current Mid

I read through the posts and I attended 2 candidate visit weekends (one as a junior, the other as a NAPSter), and also had a few candidates shadow me as a plebe. I just wanted to give a few helpful points.

1. If you are invited, GO GO GO! It's an awesome opportunity and gives you insight on true academy life, after plebe summer. Some people love it, others find that the academy isn't what they thought. So if you have the funds GO!

2. I applied to the academy over 3 years ago, but if I remember correctly there is no harm in contacting your Blue and Gold officer. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). Also, call the admissions office. When I called they were willing to answer my question. Don't call every day though !

3. There a plenty of opportunities for Candidate Visit Weekends throughout the year. So if you are invited and can't make it, be sure to ask about the other weekends available!

4. If you haven't been invited, inquire about it. Find out what you need to do to be eligible for a visit.

Good Luck,
Class of '12

?

But what does it mean? Does USNA like me? Will this heighten my chances of admission, NASS, or NAPS appointment? I'm excited, but what did I do right to get invited? Either way IM GOIN!

Yes they like you...and think you're a viable candidate.

Will it help your chances? Who knows if it will help but showing up with an attitude, dressed ragedly, full of rudeness, or ??? will get noticed and that definitely won't help.

So go. Have fun. Learn what its like from the inside.

A friend of our's son will be there from Reno that weekend too ... my son, now a youngster, will look in on him ...

thanks

Thanks for the advice. SO EXCITED to Go!!!

My son will be there too. The least excited person is the football coach who will lose his starting center for the first home game of the year.

Might ask if there is another weekend to attend USNA. For Candidate Visit Weekend, USNA was more than accommodating and son didn't miss his "friday night lights".

I'm just about to start my junior year in high school, and I didn't know that there were already CVWs when just starting junior year. Does anyone know how people obtain these? I know the academy has my name because I was invited to a briefing but do I have to already send things in to get invited to one of these?

Apparently it is something relatively new. Peach went during a prior year so it is not totally new. It isn't advertised so I have no idea how formal or extensive that it is. I know a candidate in my MOC district who is not particularly stellar, a rising junior, a majority male, and a non-athlete who just received an invitation.
