Having had my house inundated with 3 feet of water during hurricane ike, I am a little sensitive to hurricanes. Earl's track has Long Island in the cone with a saturday strike possiblity. Is there a chance acceptance day/PW will be postponed?

I would highly doubt it. I would see it being cancelled(highly unlikely), but rescheduling would likely require way too much work for the few volunteers who run it.

Back to issue of badges...sorry...

So, after much deliberation, we decided to purchase badged for Friday events only, under the auspice that the actual swearing in ceremony was a "free" event. If hurricane Earl pushes everything inside, will we still be able to attend the swearing in?

Usually they have a contingency plan in place for inclement weather. Due to size limitations there would be limited space inside for people to watch the ceremony and the number of people per plebe candidate would be restricted.

It is likely that your son/daughter might already know this number, and if not, they will soon. There would not be a charge associated with this.

Bring a rain coat (duckie suit, GoreTex, poncho, whatever).

Yikes! Just heard warning on national news for Long Island on Fri/Sat to watch storm closely - possible 100 mph winds - flooding -evacuations. Just great.

This is not the first Hurrican that wanted to attend Parents Weekend..... :yllol:

I agree with KP2001, in my humble opinion, it will not be rescheduled. All the food has been purchased and the parents association has to pay for the weekend costs in any event. Just a hint at the cost of this, the Natl. Parents Association has already received an invoice for the parents dinner with their Mids/Plebe Candidates in Delano on Friday and that total was well over $14,000.

Parents Weekend should definitely stay on as planned. Looks like we will just have weather on Friday. Hope the tent holds! In fact, usually the weather following hurricanes is ideal so Sat/Sun/Mon should be perfect. We've been watching hurricane swells all week from the last hurricane which was 100s of miles off the coast. I can just imagine what the swells from Earl will be like. It might be worthwhile to plan a trip to Jones Beach on Sun or Mon to see the surf and those crazy surfers.

kpfran - I am thinking the campus is so far uphill and on the Sound (as opposed to the Atlantic coast), there would be not as much flooding except for maybe the Waterfront. deepsea and kp2001 would know best. My question to them is - how far up the hill has the Sound ever gone?

Highest I have ever seen was 1991- I was a plebe and was wading in waist deep water on Mallory Pier. Water was about 18" above Eldridge Pool. I think this weekend should be fine at KP- just bring raingear for friday. More worried about Summerwind which is in Gloucester, MA for the Gloucester Schooner Race on Sunday, and may get a bigger hit on Friday night / Saturday.

Local forecast

The local forecasters are not too concerned with Earl. As of this morning it looks like it will pass well off shore of Long Island sometime Friday morning. The NY metropolitan area is expected to get some minor gales from the outer fringe area of the storm. If this storm passes, as others have in the past, the only area that might be affected would be the south shore of Long Island. The waterfront may have a problem with storm surge at high tide and, as previously stated, Deepsea could opine on that situation.

The rest of the weekend looks perfect! If we can weather the storm on Friday everything else should be just fine.

Now this forecast could all change in 24 hours. We all know that “you just can't reason with hurricane season”.

:thumb:Thank you and All the best to the travelers and saliors. We are bringing all our rain gear.

If I may scandalously steal a catchphrase......"Attitude - the difference between an ordeal and an adventure". Having weathered many years of hurricanes on the East coast's various shores, I'm sure we'll do fine if prepared with the appropriate clothing and equipment.

I would, however, recommend that those parents flying in be mindful of flight delays and cancellations due to impending weather. The actual KP location will probably not be too adversely affected by the forecasted weather.

Break out the foulies and come with the right attitude! It's a celebration!!!!

HAHAHA... And I though the LAST hurricane coming through did it just to fill up MY shoes. I was not foresighted, and did NOT equip myself properly for the football game. (so, lesson learned). I could not have been wetter if I'd jumped into the pool.

However, I wouldn't have missed a minute of it.
I've ordered my badges, and look forward to seeing you all there.
Look for me... I'll be wearing my mask, fins, and snorkel :)

DS is a 1/c now, and STILL I don't want to miss a minute of it, no matter what.
And I think Beat Retreat is impressive/inspiring.
Go Mariners !

My first hurricane!!

In Iowa, I have only experienced floods, tornadoes, blizzards, humidity, and drought. I am looking forward to my first hurricane experience. Hello Earl.

I've lived on L.I. my whole life and the media loves to hype these storms. Chances are western L.I. (Great Neck) will get little or no effects of the storm (according to this mornings storm track forecast).

There is way too much uncertainly in the storm's track to make any such statement (for or against) regarding "panic" considering the errors in hurricane tracking/forecasting.

Many long timers disregard hurricane forecasts on the "cry wolf" theory, but you only need to be wrong once. Ask the people of New Orleans 5 years ago, especially the ones that "lived here all my life" and the ones who stayed behind thinking the media had "hyped" Katrina.

All it takes is a 50 mile shift to the west for LI to receive a direct hit of 120+ mph winds, 12 inches of rain, flooding, and general chaos not seen in a long time.

Be careful, heed the warnings, listen to official forecasts and not your hunches.

Luigi you are correct about the inaccurate and unpredictible nature of hurricane forecasting, however, there is no need to panic parents who have not seen their children since July and have travel arrangements to come to Parent's Weekend at Kings Point over Labor Day.

NOAA runs their basic training from Kings Point, so I trust that they will be on top of the weather conditions....and the Kings Pointer is still in port.

I agree 100%. Too early to take stance either way.

Too early to panic, but it is also too early to offer reassurances that this is just "media hype" and Hurricane Earl will pass over Great Neck without incident.

Based on the potential/forecasted track, this storm may cause widespread damage to the Kings Point area - flooding and lack of electricity are going to be the most visible reminders of its visit.

Let's hope the storm doesn't affect the KP Parent's Weekend activities at all.

But to not pay attention to a potentially catastrophic storm would be irresponsible.
